Chapter 128 - Chapter 128 — Everyone Knows She’s Lying

No one said it out loud at first.

They didn't need to.

By the end of the day, the truth sat on set like a heavy fog:

Aria Lane was lying.

Not maliciously.

Not cleverly.

Just… politely.

And everyone knew it.

The Unspoken Consensus

It started with looks.

The kind exchanged when Aria wasn't looking.

Lighting tech to sound guy.

Props to stunt team.

Wire crew to each other.

A silent message passed around:

She's not normal.

She's pretending for us.

Daniel finally broke.

He slapped his clipboard shut and announced to no one in particular:

"Okay. We're done.

We ALL know she's lying, right?"

No one argued.

Mason didn't even look up.

"Yes."

Ben, the wire coordinator, nodded grimly.

"She's sandbagging."

Julian raised an eyebrow.

"That's a strong word."

Ben shrugged.

"She's holding back so hard it's affecting the equipment."

Evidence No One Can Ignore

Ben pulled up the data again.

Reaction curves.

Micro-adjustments.

Pre-load compensations.

"All of this," he said, tapping the screen,

"is her pretending to be slower."

Mason laughed once.

Hollow.

"She's pretending… and she's still terrifying."

Daniel groaned.

"That means her real speed is worse."

Julian corrected gently:

"Better."

Daniel glared.

"BETTER FOR WHO?!"

Aria Tries to Sell the Lie

Aria approached, sensing tension.

"…Is something wrong?"

Mason looked at her.

Long.

Carefully.

"Aria," he said, voice unusually calm,

"are you holding back?"

She answered immediately.

"No."

Too fast.

Daniel pointed.

"SEE?! THAT'S A LIE SPEED!"

Aria blinked.

"…I am trying to be safe."

Ben nodded.

"And that's exactly how we know."

She tilted her head.

"…Know what?"

"That you're capable of more."

Silence.

Aria considered this.

"…Yes."

Daniel screamed.

"WHY WOULD YOU JUST ADMIT IT LIKE THAT AFTER LYING FOR TWO DAYS?!"

Aria replied calmly:

"You asked directly."

Julian smiled.

"She respects clarity."

The Crew's Confession

The makeup artist stepped forward.

"We're not scared you'll mess up."

Lighting tech added:

"We're scared you'll fix it too well."

A stunt coordinator sighed.

"You don't move like someone who hopes the rig works."

Ben finished it:

"You move like someone who expects it to fail."

The words hung heavy.

Aria looked thoughtful.

"…That is reasonable."

Mason nearly fell over.

"NO IT IS NOT!"

Mason Faces Reality (Briefly)

Mason rubbed his temples.

"Okay. New rule."

Daniel perked up.

"God, yes."

Mason pointed at Aria.

"Stop pretending."

The set went quiet.

Aria blinked.

"…You want me to stop?"

"Yes."

Ben nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel nodded harder.

"Yes."

Julian watched her, expression unreadable.

Aria hesitated.

"…That may be unsafe."

Mason laughed.

"FOR WHO?!"

She didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

Julian's Observation

Julian spoke quietly.

"She's not lying to deceive us."

Everyone looked at him.

"She's lying to make us comfortable."

Aria looked at Julian.

He met her gaze.

"You don't trust the rig," he said gently.

"But you trust yourself."

She nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel whispered:

"That's worse than I thought."

The Decision No One Likes

Ben crossed his arms.

"Tomorrow's high-altitude rig…

we proceed as planned."

Mason flinched.

"But—"

"But," Ben continued,

"we stop asking her to be normal."

He looked at Aria.

"And we start asking her to be honest."

Aria considered this.

"…I can do that."

Mason's voice cracked.

"I regret every career choice I've made."

Closing Beat

As the crew dispersed, Daniel walked beside Julian.

"She's lying to protect us."

Julian nodded.

"And tomorrow… she won't."

Daniel stopped.

"…Is that supposed to make me feel better?"

Julian smiled faintly.

"No."

Across the set, Aria looked up at the rigging plans.

High.

Higher than required.

She exhaled slowly.

Not fear.

Preparation.
