Chapter 130 - Chapter 130 — Director Mason’s Final Nerve

Director Mason had always believed he was resilient.

Not fearless.

Not brave.

But functional under pressure.

That belief died at precisely 9:47 a.m.,

when Aria Lane stood forty meters above the ground

and calmly said the words:

"To measure."

Something in Mason's head made a soft, final click.

The Nerve Gives Way

"NO."

The word tore out of him before he realized he was speaking.

"Nope.

Absolutely not.

We are NOT 'measuring' anything."

He stormed toward the base of the rig, pointing upward like a man accusing gravity itself.

"ARIA, YOU ARE NOT AN ENGINEER.

YOU ARE NOT A SURVEYOR.

YOU ARE AN ACTRESS!"

Aria looked down.

"Yes."

"THEN STOP ACTING LIKE YOU'RE CALCULATING A FALL TRAJECTORY!"

Ben glanced between them.

"…She kind of is."

Mason spun.

"BEN."

"Yes?"

"DO NOT SUPPORT HER SCIENCE."

Mason vs. The Height

Mason grabbed a headset, jammed it onto his ears.

"Everyone listen to me very carefully.

This is the last nerve I have.

The FINAL ONE."

Daniel whispered to Julian:

"He's saying goodbye."

Julian didn't look away from Aria.

"She's fine."

Daniel hissed:

"STOP SAYING THAT!

EVERY TIME YOU SAY THAT, SOMETHING HAPPENS!"

Aria's Calm Makes It Worse

Up on the platform, Aria adjusted her stance again.

Small.

Precise.

Ben's voice sharpened.

"Aria. Hold position."

"I am holding."

"You just shifted—"

"To align."

Mason screamed into the headset:

"ALIGN WITH WHAT?!

THE VOID?!"

Aria considered.

"…Yes."

Daniel covered his face.

"We're going to die."

The Crew Feels It

Even without alarms, the tension spread.

A lighting tech muttered:

"I don't like this."

Sound checked his levels twice.

The stunt team stopped joking.

Ben's eyes flicked constantly between the rig, the readouts, and Aria's posture.

"She's bracing," he said quietly.

Mason froze.

"…For what."

Ben didn't answer.

Mason Tries Authority One Last Time

Mason raised both arms.

"ARIA.

COME DOWN.

RIGHT NOW."

She looked at him.

From that height, her voice still came through the comms perfectly calm.

"…Why?"

"BECAUSE I SAID SO."

Pause.

"…Is there danger?"

The question wasn't fear.

It was assessment.

Mason's mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Daniel whispered:

"She's not scared.

She's checking if she needs to be."

Ben swallowed.

"There's no danger," he said quickly.

"Everything's green."

Aria nodded once.

"Understood."

She stayed where she was.

Mason nearly collapsed.

Julian Steps In

Julian picked up a spare mic.

"Aria."

She turned slightly toward him.

"Yes?"

"Talk to me. What are you feeling?"

Ben tensed.

Mason wanted to scream.

Aria answered after a brief pause.

"…The tension is uneven."

Silence.

Ben stared at the monitor.

"That's impossible."

Aria continued:

"Left side cable is carrying more load."

Ben's fingers flew over the console.

Numbers changed.

His face drained of color.

"…She's right."

The rig creaked again.

This time, everyone heard it.

The Final Nerve Snaps

Mason's voice cracked.

"GET.

HER.

DOWN."

Ben shouted orders.

"Lower! Slowly! Don't shock the system!"

The platform began to descend.

Just a little.

Aria adjusted instinctively—

And Ben barked:

"NO ADJUSTING!"

She froze.

Completely.

The rig shuddered.

Mason's hands were shaking so badly he dropped the headset.

"I can't do this," he whispered.

"I can't do this."

Daniel grabbed his arm.

"Breathe."

Mason laughed weakly.

"I'm bald, Daniel.

I've got nothing left to lose."

Aria's Voice, Quiet but Clear

Over the comms, Aria spoke again.

"…Director Mason."

He looked up.

"Yes?"

"If something happens—"

"DON'T."

"I will handle it."

The certainty in her voice was absolute.

Not confidence.

Experience.

Mason closed his eyes.

"That's what I'm afraid of."

Closing Beat

The platform continued its slow descent.

The creaking eased.

For now.

But everyone on set knew the truth:

Whatever was coming—

Aria had already seen it.

And Mason?

Mason had just lost his final nerve.
