Chapter 99 - A U - 10

What If the Bond Failed?

The bite doesn't take.

I claim Luca under the full moon, teeth sinking deep into his throat.

But nothing happens. No bond. No mark. Nothing.

"What—?" I pull back, confused.

Luca touches his neck—bleeding but unmarked. "What did you do?"

"I tried to claim you. But it didn't work." Panic sets in. "Why didn't it work?"

We discover the truth: We're not fated mates. The bond I felt was wishful thinking. Desperation. Delusion.

"So I'm not your mate," Luca says slowly.

"No. You're not." The words taste like ash.

"Then let me go."

I should. He's right. But—

"What if we try anyway?" I blurt.

"What?"

"What if we try. No bond. No fate. Just... us. Choice."

"You kidnapped me." He's incredulous. "And now you want to date?"

"I know. It's insane. But—" I meet his eyes. "I still want you. Bond or no bond. Will you give me a chance? One real chance?"

He should say no. Should run.

"One chance," he says finally. "But you have to earn it. Court me properly. Convince me you're worth it without magical bond forcing it."

Six Months Later - Still Courting

"This is ridiculous," Luca says, but he's smiling. "You're still trying."

"Because you're worth trying for." I take his hand. "Bond or no bond."

"You really think this could work?"

"I know it can. If we choose it."

He kisses me—tentative, testing. "Okay. I'm choosing to try."

Two Years Later - The Wedding

"Do you, Luca Carter, take Rian Blackwood as your lawfully wedded husband—no bond, no fate, just choice?"

"I do." Luca smiles. "I choose him. Every day."

"And do you, Rian Blackwood, take Luca Carter—"

"I do. Forever. Bond or no bond."

We kiss, and it's perfect.

Not fated. Not destined. Just chosen.

Ten Years Later

"Is it ever weird?" Luca asks. "Not having a bond?"

"Sometimes. But also..." I pull him close. "I know you stay because you want to. Not because magic forces you. That's more meaningful."

"True." He traces my jaw. "Every day I wake up and choose you. That's powerful."

"Every day I work to deserve that choice." I kiss him softly. "I love you. Not because of fate. Because of you."

"I love you too. My un-fated, chosen mate."

Our children—adopted from orphaned pack members—run into the room.

"Daddy! Papa! Play with us!"

We built this family through choice. Every member chosen, wanted, loved.

"Coming!" Luca calls.

Later, watching our kids play, he squeezes my hand.

"No regrets?" I ask.

"Not one. This is better. We built this ourselves."

"Without fate's help."

"Exactly." He grins. "We're proving love doesn't need magic. Just commitment."

In this universe, the bond failed.

But their love succeeded anyway.

Proving choice is more powerful than fate.
