Chapter 23 - Chapter Twenty-three: A mother's decision

THIRD PERSON'S POV

Oakwood Teaching Hospital.

Two days after Evan was captured by Piper Redding

10:00AM

Elena's eyes blinked slowly as she regained consciousness. She blinked a few more times to get her blurred vision to become normal. After a few minutes, it returned back to normal and she turned her head and was met with Hazel's gaze.

"Elena! Oh my goodness, you are awake", Hazel said as she stood up from the chair and went to her side, "I'll get the doctor."

Hazel bolted out of the ward and came back with a woman a few minutes later.

"Good day Miss Elena. How are you feeling?", she asked.

‎Elena tried to speak, but a dry cough escaped from her throat.

‎"That's alright," the doctor said gently, glancing at the monitor beside the bed. She nodded once, as if confirming something to herself.

‎"Miss Elena, my name is Dr. Amy. I'm the physician assigned to you."

‎Elena swallowed hard and gave a faint nod.

‎"When you were brought in unconscious, we ran a full diagnostic," Dr. Amy continued. "It's standard procedure."

‎Hazel shifted closer to the bed.

‎"There's something we need to discuss," the doctor said, her voice lowering. She paused, choosing her words carefully.

‎"The scans revealed a mass in your brain. Specifically, in the pineal gland."

‎The room seemed to shrink.

‎Elena's fingers curled into the sheets as Hazel sucked in a sharp breath. Tears welled in Hazel's eyes, spilling over before she could stop them.

‎"A tumor?" Elena whispered.

‎"Yes," Dr. Amy said.

‎Elena stared at the ceiling, her pulse thudding in her ears.

‎"Have you noticed anything else?" the doctor asked. "Changes in vision, nausea, confusion… anything unusual?"

‎Elena hesitated. Her jaw tightened.

‎"No," she said quietly. "Just the headaches."

‎Dr. Amy studied her for a moment, as if she sensed the omission.

‎"Leaving it untreated carries risks," she said carefully. "I'd strongly advise further evaluation before making any decisions."

‎Elena nodded once, her expression unreadable.

‎"I'll give you some time," Dr. Amy said softly. She turned and left the room.

Elena closed her eyes and a series of visions caused her to panic and she opened her eyes.

Hazel came back to her side and held her arm gently.

"Don't worry Elena, I am here for you."

Tears began to stream down Elena's eyes.

Back at the blackwood mansion

2:00PM

Seraphina, Damien, Sebastian and Alexander sat down in the living room.

"Every lead that we have followed both from inside the police department and from our associates from the underworld leads to a dead end", Damien said. "It's strange."

"It's not", Seraphina said, making everyone look at her. "Piper Redding is one of the assassins from the five foes that leave no trace. Even though Alexander here is a leader of his own underworld organization, it'll be difficult to find Miss Elena's son this way."

"What do you suggest?", Damien asked.

"Simple we go to Miss Elena and ask her of the people who she suspects can take her son. We find them and we analyze them if they are suspects."

"I'll make a call to Hazel", Damien said, bringing out his phone.

The call was brief with Damien's expression changing and looking at Alexander he ended the call but his gaze remained locked with Alexander's.

"Hazel said that the doctors said that Miss Elena has a tumor in her pineal gland and she has signed against the doctors orders and is about to leave the hospital."

Alexander frowned and quickly got up.

3:00PM

"Elena, you need to reconsider. I won't let you do this to yourself. Think about Evan", Hazel's voice cracked and she held Elena's hand tightly.

Elena stopped and locked her gaze with Hazel. With her eyes burning with fierce intensity and a resolute voice, she said, "I'm thinking about him." She then released herself slowly from Hazel's grip.

Elena's eyes quickly darted to and fro looking for the hospital's phone services for their patients. She had to quickly make an anonymous phone call to the police on the whereabouts of her son that she saw in her vision and she had to be fast.
