At that moment, Diancie walked out of the house, holding a broom. "I should be the one to tell you," it said.
As it turned out, Diancie had already interrogated the two Farfetch'd before Ange returned. These two Farfetch'd were originally Pokémon from the mountain range to the northwest. However, because a sudden blizzard broke out in the mountains, they were forced to leave to seek refuge.
During their escape from the blizzard, they had lost their own leeks. A Farfetch'd's leek was a vital possession, much like a Komala's log, a Delphox's branch, or an Alakazam's spoons.
After many twists and turns, the two Farfetch'd arrived at the warm Nebel Plateau. By chance, they discovered the vegetable patch behind Ange's house. Seeing the patch filled with thick leeks, they were overjoyed and hoped to find a replacement for their original ones.
However, finding a leek that suited them perfectly was not easy. They needed to feel it in their own hands to tell the difference. Consequently, they pulled out one stalk after another, yet failed to find a proper fit. The end result was the tragic scene Ange and the others witnessed yesterday.
Since they hadn't found one yesterday, they naturally returned today to continue their search, only to fall into an ambush. After hearing Diancie's narration, Ange asked, "Do you two know that this garden has an owner, and the leeks inside belong to someone?"
Far far , Far far~
The two Farfetch'd nodded, indicating they knew.
"You knew and still picked them without permission? Don't you know that's called stealing, and it's wrong?" Ange questioned.
Far far~Far far~
The two Farfetch'd looked at each other. What was wrong with it? Isn't it a case of whoever grabs it, owns it? In the past, the leeks they grew themselves were often stolen by other Pokémon too!
Having lived in the wild for years, the two Farfetch'd were used to fighting other Pokémon for territory and food. Naturally, their logic was different from the Pokémon on the Nebel Plateau. Ange couldn't really blame them using human logic, as their survival environment demanded such behavior from them.
"So, now that you failed to seize the leeks and have been captured by me, what do you plan to do?" Ange asked.
The two Farfetch'd tossed their heads back with expressions of total fearlessness.
Far far~ "Up to you!"
Far far~ "Do whatever you want."
After Diancie translated, Ange said, "Since you said so, I shall punish you! You must replant the leeks you destroyed. During this time, if you find a leek that suits you, it will be yours."
The two Farfetch'd froze, looking at Ange in disbelief.
"What is it? Not willing?" Ange asked with a smile.
Far far~ "Are you telling the truth?"
The male Farfetch'd asked.
"Of course. Is there any need for me to lie to you?" Ange nodded.
The two Farfetch'd tilted their heads, staring at Ange with strange looks. Ange, caught between laughter and tears, asked, "What now?"
Far far~ "You really are a strange human," the female Farfetch'd replied.
They were captives! Captives were supposed to work without rewards! However, Ange's next words surprised them even more.
"By the way! If you grow the leeks well, I can also provide you with food and a place to stay," Ange said.
The male Farfetch'd asked uncertainly, Far far~ "Are you really not lying to us?"
Was there really such a good deal? Wouldn't that mean they would work here for a lifetime? Growing leeks was what they were best at! They had grown many leeks in the mountain streams of their hometown, but a terrifying blizzard had destroyed everything.
"I'm really not. What benefit would I get from lying to you?" Ange replied, amused. "Just say whether you agree or not."
The two Farfetch'd looked at each other and then nodded to Ange.
Far far~ "Okay."
Far far~ "Fine."
The moment Farfetch'd agreed, Ange heard the System prompt and knew the mission was complete. [Captured the vegetable thieves]. Truly, a warrior will never be a slave, unless room and board are included.
"Alright, I'll unbind you. Don't think about running away," Ange said.
The Farfetch'd were quite offended, feeling as if Ange was looking down on them. Far far~ "Since we agreed, we definitely won't go back on our word!"
The other Farfetch'd chimed in, Far far~ "Exactly! You are insulting us."
Ange apologized while unbinding them, "Alright, alright, I misspoke. I'm sorry."
Just as Ange finished untying the ropes, he heard their stomachs let out loud growls. Ange asked with a smile, "Hungry?"
The two Farfetch'd nodded. They hadn't eaten anything for a day and a night.
"Then do you want to eat something here?" Ange asked again.
Far far~ "Can we?"
They wouldn't refuse. Their difficult life in the wild had taught them never to pass up any opportunity to get food.
"Of course," Ange nodded.
So, the two Farfetch'd agreed to stay for lunch. They even shot meaningful glances at the nearby Croconaw, Quilladin, and the Dugtrio brothers.
Far far~ "If we weren't so hungry and lacked strength, we wouldn't have lost to you!"
Far far~ "Exactly, exactly!"
Quilladin, with its short temper, immediately shouted back, Quill quill~ "If you've got the guts, let's duel after lunch."
Far far~ "A duel it is!"
Far far~ "Just you wait."
Watching the Pokémon refuse to back down, Ange shook his head with a smile. Because too many leeks had been pulled up by the Farfetch'd yesterday, Ange planned to use leeks in several dishes for lunch. Fortunately, no one in their house disliked leeks.
"Munchlax, Drizzile, come here. Today I'll teach you a few new recipes," Ange called Munchlax and Drizzile into the kitchen.
Munch munch~
Driz driz~
Munchlax and Drizzile were overjoyed. They quickly changed their clothes and followed Ange into the kitchen. The first dish Ange made was scrambled eggs with leeks.
"Munchlax, can you help me crack a few eggs and whisk them?" Ange asked.
Munch munch~ "No problem."
Munchlax trotted over to open the fridge, took out the eggs, and started working.
Ange added, "Drizzile, help me wash some more leeks."
Driz driz~
Drizzile gave Ange a thumbs up and winked at him. Ange returned the gesture. Receiving the response, Drizzile happily brought over a bundle of leeks and efficiently trimmed and washed them.
Meanwhile, Ange began preparing the various seasonings and other ingredients. In addition to the scrambled eggs with leeks, Ange planned to make leek stir-fry with pork belly, leek-braised tofu, and double pepper leek salad.
He suddenly remembered a piece of mutton he bought at the supermarket a couple of days ago, so he decided on a whim to add sautéed mutton with leeks. The tofu for the leek-braised tofu was actually made by Ange himself after buying beans, because tofu was simply not sold in the Kalos region.
To be precise, the kind of tofu Ange wanted to eat wasn't sold; the tofu they sold was more like Japanese tofu or Kaku-tofu. The raw material for those two types was not beans; Japanese tofu was made from eggs, and Kaku-tofu was made from fish.
The tofu Ange made himself was sour-syrup tofu and brine tofu. The difference was that sour-syrup tofu had a softer texture and a delicate mouthfeel, usually called silken tofu. Brine tofu was firmer and had a coarser texture, often called firm tofu. The beauty of firm tofu lay in its richer bean aroma.
Ange didn't use a machine; it was all handmade. Therefore, Munchlax was used as a "donkey" to pull the stone mill once. Of course, it was very willing, because it learned how to make another kind of delicacy.
Every member of Ange's household loved tofu. Ange and Munchlax liked both types, Diancie preferred firm tofu, and Drizzile liked silken tofu. As for Komala, no one knew which one it preferred because it ate plenty of both but never said which was better.
The fragrance of the leeks grown at Ange's home was incredibly potent. As time passed, the domineering aroma drifted out of the kitchen. The two Farfetch'd couldn't control their noses as their mouths constantly salivated.
The female Farfetch'd couldn't help but gently tug on Diancie, Far far~ "What is that human making? It smells so good."
Diancie intentionally teased, "Won't you find out in a bit? Also, his name is Ange, the owner of the Nebel Plateau. You can call him Ange."
Far far~ "Okay, I got it. Ange, then."
The female Farfetch'd nodded and then, together with the male Farfetch'd, stared unblinkingly toward the kitchen. Diancie left the hall first as it had other things to do, leaving only the two Farfetch'd and the snoring Komala.
Eventually, the female Farfetch'd couldn't resist. It crept to the kitchen door and used its wing to grip the doorframe, peeking inside. Ange noticed it quickly and asked with a laugh, "What is it? Starving?"
The female Farfetch'd nodded.
Far far~ "What are you making? It smells wonderful."
Unfortunately, Ange couldn't understand it, and with the sizzling sounds of stir-frying in the kitchen, he didn't answer. Munchlax and Drizzile were focusing intently on Ange's cooking, listening to the details he mentioned, so they didn't notice the inquiry either. With no one answering, the Farfetch'd just silently gripped the doorframe and watched quietly.
While handling the mutton, Ange suddenly thought of something. Besides the vast waters, the largest part of the Nebel Plateau was grassland. Why not raise some cattle and sheep? This would not only generate income but also make it convenient for him to eat meat! He silently noted this plan in his heart while cooking.
Soon the meal was ready. Munchlax and Drizzile brought the dishes to the table. The family of five and the two Farfetch'd sat around the table.
Note: Under normal circumstances, other employee Pokémon do not eat lunch at Ange's house. Their lunch consists of the wages Ange provides (energy blocks, cookies, etc.), otherwise, it would be too much work for Ange and the others to cook three meals a day.
"Hurry and eat while it's hot," Ange invited the two Farfetch'd.
They were already impatient. As soon as Ange finished speaking, they picked up their spoons and began to eat voraciously, spoonful after spoonful. Farfetch'd loved growing leeks, and their favorite food was naturally leeks, so they were instantly conquered by Ange's culinary skills.
Soon lunch ended. Not a single bit of food or rice was left on the table. The two Farfetch'd had eaten the most. Looking at the two Farfetch'd slumped in their chairs with rounded bellies, Ange asked with a smile, "How was it? Was it good?"
The two Farfetch'd nodded without a second thought.
"Then do you want to work here permanently so you can eat this kind of food anytime?" Ange asked.
They nodded again without hesitation.
"Then you'll have to grow leeks well! If you don't grow them well, I won't keep you," Ange began his manipulation.
Far far~Far far~
Hearing this, a raging fighting spirit ignited in the eyes of the two Farfetch'd. They had to stay! They had to lead a life where they didn't have to worry about food or clothing! Ange nodded with satisfaction.
After lunch, Ange took the two Farfetch'd to the employee dormitory. At this time, the other Pokémon were gathered in the living room watching TV. The TV had just been installed, and the novelty hadn't worn off. They were in high spirits, so they gathered here whenever they had time.
"Everyone!" Ange clapped his hands. The Pokémon immediately turned to look at him. "These two are Farfetch'd who just arrived at the Nebel Plateau. Take good care of them from now on. If there's anything they don't understand, please teach them."
The Pokémon of the Nebel Plateau were always hospitable. Hearing Ange's words, they stopped watching TV and gathered around the two Farfetch'd, chattering away as they introduced the plateau. Only Croconaw and Quilladin stood to the side, looking quite begrudging.
It was the first time the two Farfetch'd had been treated with such warmth, so they were a bit overwhelmed. Ange felt they must be breaking out in a cold sweat.
After a while, Ange said to Delphox, Greninja, and Chesnaught, "I'll need you to guide the Farfetch'd. Their previous environment was different from here, so some of their habits might differ from everyone else's. Please be patient with them."
Del del~
Gre gre~
Ches ches~
The three Pokémon nodded. As the guardians of the Nebel Plateau, they felt it was their responsibility to ensure every Pokémon integrated into this big family. Once everyone got to know the Farfetch'd, Ange took them to choose their living quarters.
Looking at the beautiful and comfortable rooms, the male Farfetch'd asked hesitantly, Far far~ "Is this really a place for us to stay?"
