Chapter 39: Small Fry
North Blue - Unnamed Deserted Island - Coastline
The setting sun cast a golden glow on the desolate, quiet beach. A group of low-level pirates were gathered in a circle, staring at a metal case on the ground, their faces flush with excitement.
"Heh heh heh! Finally! It's finally my time to shine!"
Bellamy stood with his hands on his hips, laughing his signature cackle, loud enough for the whole North Blue to hear. "Doflamingo-sama finally recognizes our strength!"
He puffed out his chest. "As soon as we hand this case to the contact, we'll be official members of the Donquixote Family!"
"Boss! This is our big break!"
Sarquiss rubbed his hands together, his eyes gleaming. "Once we're in the Donquixote Family, we'll run the entire North Blue!"
"We can beat up whoever we want! Marines, other pirates... when they see the Bellamy Pirates, they'll all run with their tails between their legs!"
"Heh heh heh..." Hewitt chimed in, "We'll be just like the main officers! All the women and Beli we could ever want!"
"Yeah, yeah! The good life is finally here!" Ross cheered, but then he paused, scratching his head in confusion.
"But... Boss? That... Trebol-sama... he never told us what the contact looks like."
The air went silent.
Bellamy's laugh died in his throat. His face froze.
"...Huh?"
Sarquiss, Hewitt, and Ross all stared at Bellamy, their expressions a perfect blend of stupid and confused. Boss, don't tell us you don't know?
A drop of cold sweat ran down Bellamy's temple. He quickly composed himself, puffing his chest out again.
"Hmph! It's a deserted island, you morons! There's no one here! It'll be obvious who the contact is when they show up! Stop asking stupid questions!"
"Ooooh! As expected of the Boss! You've thought of everything!" Sarquiss immediately started sucking up again. "A simple mission like this! No way it could go wrong! The Boss is a genius!"
"Yeah, yeah!" the other two chimed in.
Bellamy's ego swelled. Just as he was about to brag some more, Sarquiss suddenly pointed at the beach.
"Uh... Boss. Someone's here."
Bellamy turned. In the twilight, a tall figure was walking slowly toward them, a white coat flapping in the wind.
"Heh heh!" Bellamy laughed, relieved. "That must be the contact! See? My deduction was right!"
The crew cheered, but none of them noticed the cold, dangerous aura radiating from the approaching figure.
The man was tall and imposing, wearing a white "Justice" coat. He had a handsome, young face with a faint, unreadable smile.
"A Marine?"
Bellamy squinted, then scoffed, his face full of disdain. "Tch, look at this pretty-boy rookie. He's just a brat. What's a single Marine doing here in Donquixote Family territory?"
"Boss..." Sarquiss said, "why is he alone?"
"What's to be scared of?" Bellamy sneered. "I'm 'Bellamy the Hyena,' user of the Spring-Spring Fruit! A single Marine rookie is just here to die!"
He strutted forward, pointing a finger in Roy's face. "Hey! Marine brat! Do you know whose territory this is? You got a death wish?"
Roy's gaze passed over them, landing on the metal box.
"The Donquixote Family? When did that little flamingo start recruiting trash like you?"
"Or is he so desperate he's using ignorant fools like you as sacrificial pawns?"
"What did you say?!"
Bellamy's face turned red. "You... you dare insult Doflamingo-sama?! Die!"
He compressed his legs and shot forward like a bullet, his fist aimed straight at Roy's face!
"Spring Sniper!"
Roy didn't even bother to move.
THWACK!
Bellamy's fist stopped dead, blocked effortlessly by a single, outstretched finger. It was like hitting a wall of steel.
Bellamy's eyes went wide. "How...?!"
"This is all the strength you have? And you call yourself part of the Donquixote Family?"
Roy shook his head. "The flamingo is smart, I'll give him that. Sending idiots like you to die for him... It seems this is as far as your value goes."
"You bastard, what are you—!"
Before Bellamy could finish, Roy flicked his finger.
"BOOM!"
A terrifying shockwave sent Bellamy flying backward, smashing him into a distant cliff face.
"BOSS!!" Sarquiss screamed in terror.
Roy walked toward the metal case, his voice cold. "My payment. Hand it over."
Sarquiss drew his blade, his arm trembling. "What the hell... This is a mission from Doflamingo-sama! A Marine has no right—"
"Mission?" Roy laughed. "Don't be stupid. This isn't a mission. This is payment for his life. He sent you idiots because he never intended for you to return alive."
Sarquiss froze. Before he could process the words, Roy's figure vanished.
"Wha?!"
Roy was in front of him. He chopped his hand down. "In any case, wastes of oxygen like you don't deserve to live."
CRACK!
Sarquiss was dead before he hit the ground.
"Sarquiss!" Hewitt and Ross screamed and tried to run. They didn't make it two steps before two more thwacks echoed out, and they, too, dropped to the sand.
Roy calmly picked up the metal case with one hand and turned to face Bellamy, who was struggling to crawl out of the rubble.
Bellamy, his body wracked with pain, stared in absolute terror. "Who... who are you?!"
Roy didn't answer. He just looked at him with pity. "Go back and tell Doflamingo..."
A cold, terrifying smile spread across his face.
"I've received this installment of his life-payment."
He paused, then added, "And tell that little flamingo... if I see him again, the consequences won't be this simple."
Bellamy, bleeding and broken, scrambled away in a panic, all his earlier arrogance gone.
Roy watched him go, then turned and vanished into the twilight, case in hand.
The deserted island was silent once more, save for the three cold bodies on the beach.
