Chapter 64 - Chapter 57 Mormont's Gratitude

Fire blazed fiercely in Maester Aemon's room.

The corpse, named Jaremy Rykker, was consumed by the flames, ultimately turning into a pile of charred bones.

Its eerie blue eyes completely lost their glow.

Only after the flames gradually died down did the nauseating smell of burning in the room slowly dissipate.

But the fear that gripped the hearts of all the Night's Watch grew thicker, like the mists of the Haunted Forest.

"The Lord was right..."

A young Guardsman, looking at the black remains on the ground, said with a trembling voice.

He was a member of Toren's squad, the one who executed Lynn's plan.

"Only fire...only fire works!"

His words instantly resonated.

"I chopped at it several times with my sword just now, it was useless! It seemed to feel no pain, completely indifferent to its injuries!"

Another Guardsman who participated in the battle added, still shaken.

"Yes! That thing was too strong! I almost got caught by it!"

"Luckily, we listened to the Lord and prepared torches and lamp oil in advance!"

Toren and his soldiers described the thrilling scene that had just unfolded, speaking over each other.

Their voices were filled with the relief of having survived a calamity and a heartfelt admiration for Lynn.

If it hadn't been for Lord Lynn's early deployment, if they hadn't strictly followed the order to use fire...

Tonight, what would be lying here wouldn't be a pile of charred bones, but their own corpses!

The surrounding Night's Watch listened quietly.

Their expressions changed constantly.

From initial doubt, to shock, and now to awe.

The way they looked at Lynn had also changed.

This young man, once scorned by them as a deserter, had conquered them with force, but he had always been equated with a deserter.

Now, Lynn, in their eyes, seemed to be enveloped in a mysterious and powerful aura.

He was not a madman.

He was a prophet.

A seer who could lead them against the darkness!

Alliser Thorne stood at the edge of the crowd, his face extremely grim, as if he had eaten a fly.

He listened to the soldiers' praises of Lynn, and the hushed discussions of the surrounding Night's Watch.

He felt a burning sensation on his face.

As if he had been slapped dozens of times with the sole of a shoe.

He wanted to retort, to continue saying that this was Lynn's conspiracy.

But the facts before him rendered him speechless.

Two wights, two attacks.

In one, the Lord Commander almost lost his life, and was only saved by the divine weapon in Lynn's hand.

In the other, thanks to Lynn's prior deployment, the crisis was resolved without a single injury.

The difference was clear.

Facts spoke louder than any rhetoric.

He, Alliser Thorne, this self-proclaimed noble knight, this drillmaster of Castle Black, in the face of true crisis, was like a clown jumping around.

And the deserter he had always looked down upon had become the hero who saved everyone.

This stark contrast shattered Thorne's self-esteem!

Jeor Mormont leaned against the doorframe, his aged face also filled with complex emotions.

He looked at his own room, which was a mess from the fire, and then at the perfectly handled scene in Maester Aemon's room.

He knew that if it hadn't been for his momentary lapse in judgment, not fully trusting Lynn's advice...

He had only simply bound these two corpses!

A strong sense of dread welled up in Mormont's heart.

He looked at Lynn with gratitude.

It was no longer the appreciation of a superior for a subordinate.

But the heartfelt gratitude of a survivor pulled back from the brink of death for his savior.

"Lynn."

Mormont walked up to Lynn.

"You saved me once."

"And you saved all of Castle Black."

"This is what I owe you."

Lynn shook his head slightly:

"I just did what I had to do, Lord Commander."

"No."

Mormont's tone was extremely solemn.

"This isn't just what had to be done."

"You stood against everyone's objections. The responsibility is mine; I didn't believe you."

Mormont's words were deeply etched into the heart of every Night's Watch present.

The Lord Commander had already acknowledged Lynn.

No one else dared to question Lynn.

And no one dared to call him a deserter anymore.

Lynn, with two undeniable victories, with two wights burned to ashes, completely washed away all the infamy on him.

"Clean this up."

Mormont gave Thorne the order.

His tone was cold, devoid of emotion.

He currently had little regard for Thorne.

"Get rid of all this stuff, clean it up."

"After dawn, I will hold an emergency meeting."

"Go notify all officers; they must attend!"

With that, Mormont stopped looking at anyone and turned to walk to his own room.

His back seemed a little hunched, but his steps were exceptionally firm.

Everything that happened tonight made him fully understand one thing.

The Long Night was truly coming.

Yet, the Night's Watch was not ready.

The crowd gradually dispersed.

The Night's Watch, filled with fear and shock, returned to their respective barracks.

But everyone knew that tonight, no one would sleep.

Jon Snow walked up to Lynn.

He looked at Lynn, his grey eyes filled with admiration and a hint of dependence he hadn't even noticed himself.

"Lynn, thank you."

Jon's voice was very low.

He thanked Lynn not just for saving the Lord Commander and Castle Black.

But also for making him realize the truth.

"There really are those legendary Others."

Jon smiled bitterly.

"Only now do I understand that we're not facing wildlings at all."

"We're actually facing these undead monsters."

"And my father almost had you beheaded..."

"I apologize to you on behalf of my father..."

Lynn, however, patted Jon's shoulder:

"Don't worry, I'm not a petty person. Your father is responsible and was just following the rules."

"Besides, I'm still alive, aren't I?"

"Go rest, there's a lot more to do tomorrow."

Seeing that Lynn had no complaints, Jon admired Lynn's magnanimity even more. He nodded heavily in gratitude, then left silently with Ghost.

Lynn watched his retreating figure.

He knew that this future Lord Commander of the Night's Watch had truly grown up after tonight.

The reason for building a good relationship with Jon was also simple.

If other issues were not considered, and purely from a selfish perspective, Lynn had only one goal.

He would contend for dragons and lead armies, not having so much time to remain at Castle Black.

And Jon would remain here.

Befriending Jon would indirectly gain Jon's help. If Jon could become Lord Commander, it would be no different from Lynn himself becoming Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

Lynn withdrew his gaze and thoughts, looking at his hundred Northern soldiers.

They stood together, chests puffed out, looking at him with a fervor as if they were looking at a deity.

"Lord!"

Toren's voice was filled with barely suppressed excitement.

"You are simply a messenger sent by the Old Gods!"

Lynn smiled, saying nothing.

But he was quite pleased in his heart.

Anyone associated with a god would greatly enhance their prestige.

Especially in this era, a time when people generally had faith.

Everyone believed in the Old Gods, but he, Lynn, could be directly guided by the Old Gods!

These loyal soldiers would go through fire and water for him, without hesitation.

And this was just the beginning.
