Chapter 12 - Trying to level up

Hearing what Kaiden had to say wasn't a waste of time like Chuck initially thought. She had a good reason to put an end to the existence of this professor. Listening to her, Chuck had already made up his mind that he was going to aid her in any way he could. Following the system messages he just got, his conviction grew stronger.

Reading the contents of the popped up system, Chuck was only one step closer to forming a smile on his face. But he reminded himself that it was supposed to be a moment filled with anger and sadness, so he decided to keep his composure, leaving his intense rush of excitement for later.

"I thought I was only going to receive daily and weekly quests. Well I'm extremely glad that it isn't the case. Seeing as my weekly quest is already completed, it was only going to make things harder for me, but now, all I have to do is find things that are worthy enough for the system," Chuck thought inwardly.

Kaiden found it weird that Chuck was staring blankly at the air, "uhm, so I know that the both of us aren't strong enough to take professor Modrick on, so I think we have a few choices. We can either work on ourselves, grow stronger, and maybe become efficient enough to carry out the task, or we can recruit more members. It should be hard for me considering…" Kaiden suggested.

But Chuck quickly cut her off, "No! Adding more members to the team is not an option. The only person that I will even consider is Erik."

Chuck had his own reasons as to why he didn't want anyone else to join them. It was because he didn't want anybody else to find out about his powers. The way his body manifested it was different.

All the mages in the world used mana as their power source. Mages drew mana from their surrounding atmosphere, manipulated it, and used it to cast spells.

But knew that what he had inside of him wasn't mana. It didn't react like mana, nor did it manifest like mana. Due to his infernal shroud, Chuck could tell that the energy he now possessed inside of him felt even more powerful than mana itself. His mana energy was still in his being, but he couldn't access it.

Chuck could only choose Erik, because he seemed like the kind of person worthy of his trust.

"I think you're wrong about something else. I don't know about you, but I believe that I will grow stronger in no time," Chuck said, rather confident in his system.

"Really? And how're you gonna do that?" Kaiden asked, with a look that seemed like she wasn't taking Chuck seriously.

Chuck stared at Kaiden glowing face for a while, "I think we need to leave the library for us to get started."

A few minutes later Chuck and Kaiden could be seen in a secluded sandy field, not wanting prying eyes to notice them. Of course, making their way through the academy grounds wasn't easy. Several students saw the both of them walking side by side, and it raised a series of suspicions.

The most important thing was that they both got to their destination, without any of the students trying to hinder them in any way, to cause a scene.

Standing about fifteen feet away from each other, they both readied themselves for whatever the hell they were about to do. Kaiden's silver hair reflected itself under the sunlight so perfectly, almost making it seem like it was glowing.

Chuck opened his system to verify some information.

"Alright then. I just need Kaiden to attack me again. Hopefully with the infernal shroud activated afterwards, I will get healed," Chuck thought, feeling an organ in his chest beating faster than usual.

Kaiden noticed that Chuck was staring at the air again, "Hey! Do you mind telling me what we are about to do? What am I gonna toast you again?"

"That's precisely what you're going to do," Chuck replied, taking one step, and closing the distance between them slightly.

Kaiden was immediately shocked by his response, judging by how mad he was earlier.

"A few moments ago you were mad at me because I burnt you back at the combat lesson class, and now you're telling me to do it again? Are you fucking insane!!!" Kaiden exploded.

Knowing how bad the situation looks for him, Chuck tried to explain himself, "Hey look things have changed alright? Don't you need my help? Just calm yourself, and throw the attack. It won't be like last time… I promise."

Taking deep breaths, Kaiden tried to calm herself.

"Well you better brace yourself for this one, I don't want you dying on me," she said, as she began forming a fireball between her palms.

Just like the last time, the fireball grew larger, and larger, until the growth stopped at a towering size. Chuck could feel the heat coming from the flames. His pulse quickened, as he braced himself for another round of excruciating pain.

At an intense speed, Kaiden threw the fireball in Chuck's direction. The ball of flames travelled and within seconds, it closed the distance, reaching Chuck before he could properly ready himself mentally.

The moment the flames made contact with Chuck's body, he was immediately lifted off the ground, as a searing pain enveloped his being. He travelled several metres in the air before landing.

His body bounced and rolled, specks of sand and dust entered his mouth, and just like the last time, his skin looked like it was grilled too much.

Weakly lying on the ground, before he could pass out, he used the last bit of energy he had to focus on his system.

"Activate infernal shroud," Chuck tried to concentrate.

/ Infernal shroud has been activated /

And Chuck passed cold.
