Chapter 38 - Chapter 37: The Conditions for Awakening

Li Chang'an had no idea how far he had swum downward. After what felt like a long descent, he began to notice faint flickers of crimson and icy blue light shimmering ahead.

The narrow vertical tunnel suddenly opened into a vast underground cavern—so wide and deep that it seemed to have no end.

He continued to swim downward for a while longer until he finally saw the source of that mysterious light.

"This is… a dragon?"

Before him, floating in the dark water, were two enormous dragon-shaped phantoms made entirely of energy. Though each was less than ten meters long, their bodies were covered in layered, gleaming scales, crystal-like horns, and regal features that exuded both majesty and dominance.

The two dragon shadows glided slowly through the darkness like twin fish in an endless sea. Wherever they passed, faint trails of blue and red light flickered through the water—painting the cavern in a haunting glow.

Illuminated by that dim light, Li Chang'an could make out what lay at the bottom—a massive field of jagged "ridges," stretching out like mountains beneath the earth.

But upon closer inspection, he realized those weren't mountain ridges at all—they were spinal bones, immense and jagged like the saw-edged backbone of a colossal creature!

As the two dragon phantoms drifted past, their light revealed even more of the enormous forms.Layer after layer of scales glimmered faintly, muscles bulged beneath, frozen in eternal stillness, and every contour of their bodies seemed to scream of unimaginable strength.

Focusing his gaze, Li Chang'an saw clearly now—two gigantic dragons, each hundreds of meters long!

They were long dead, their bodies motionless as if turned to stone. Yet even after countless millennia, their overwhelming aura still pressed heavily against the heart.

"So these are two of the Dragon God's nine children—the Water Dragon King and the Fire Dragon King…" Li Chang'an murmured.

For a brief moment he was awestruck, but then his eyes began to burn with excitement.Despite their deaths, the dragons' corpses were perfectly preserved—flesh and bone intact.

Which meant, theoretically… he could eat dragon meat today.

Moving cautiously, Li Chang'an drifted closer to the two colossal bodies. All the while, he kept glancing toward the two drifting dragon souls in the distance, fearful they might attack him.

According to the legends, each of those dragon souls still possessed half-divine power—far beyond his ability to withstand.

Fortunately, perhaps because he had consumed the Ice and Fire Immortal Herbs, his aura had blended seamlessly with the surrounding spring water. As a result, the dragon souls did not notice him.

He landed lightly upon one of the massive scales.

Even after all this time, the surface beneath his bare feet felt hard as tempered steel. He couldn't help but think—if these scales could be forged into armor, they'd make an indestructible defense.

Stabilizing himself in the water with a touch of soul power, Li Chang'an crouched and examined the scales closely. Each scale was over a meter wide, and there were countless upon countless of them.

However, with such enormous size, the traditional blacksmithing methods of this world would be useless. To craft them into usable armor would require the techniques of a cultivation world—refining them as spiritual artifacts.

But Li Chang'an lacked that ability, so he sighed and let the idea go.

He grabbed one of the scales tightly, planted his feet firmly against the others, gathered strength, and pulled with all his might!

With a harsh crack, the scale tore loose—not easily, but the endless years had loosened the flesh enough that even this divine armor could be pried off with effort.

Beneath it lay smooth, pale flesh.

Li Chang'an tossed the scale aside, then summoned his Azure Scale Sword, beginning to cut into the exposed skin.

Yet even with his sword's keen edge, he soon realized how incredibly tough the dragon's flesh was—harder than metal. With no choice, he activated his soul rings one after another, empowering his weapon with enhanced sharpness until, finally, he managed to cut through the hide.

After much effort, he pried out a chunk of dragon meat.

No blood flowed from the wound; the flesh glittered like polished crystal.

He stared at it skeptically. "Can my teeth even bite through this?"

Cutting off a thin sliver, he cautiously placed it in his mouth and chewed.

To his surprise, it had no fishy smell—but it was dry, tough, and chewy, like gnawing on a strip of raw hide.

After a few moments, he spat it out.

"Ugh! Damn it, there's no energy in this at all!" he cursed, tossing the rest away.

He finally understood.

Though the two dragon corpses hadn't decayed, the endless passage of hundreds of thousands of years, and the constant immersion in the spring water, had drained every ounce of their energy into the surrounding environment.

It was like soaking a snake in wine—the essence went into the wine, leaving behind an empty husk.

He should've realized sooner.

To create a place as powerful as the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, the energy required was astronomical. How could the dragons' bodies possibly have retained any of it?

"Great. Now what?"

He scratched his head. Eating dragon meat clearly wasn't going to work.Where else could he find a source of pure, high-quality energy?

"Fine, let's see if their inner cores survived," he muttered, deciding to search around the bodies for any trace of a dragon's core.

As for soul bones, that was out of the question. These dragons were divine beasts, not ordinary soul beasts.

In ancient times, soul beasts didn't leave behind soul bones—or even soul rings—after death. Those were artificial phenomena created only later, when the Divine Realm tampered with the laws of the Douluo Continent.

After searching for a while, Li Chang'an found nothing—not even a hint of an inner core.He suspected that if they had possessed cores, they were either buried deep within their bodies… or dissolved long ago.

Even if the cores still existed, he thought bitterly, they'd probably be empty shells by now.

"Sigh… forget it," he muttered, shaking his head.

He was about to swim upward and leave when something caught his eye.

In the corner of his vision, the two drifting dragon souls glowed faintly in the distance. He froze—then a bold, reckless idea flashed through his mind.

Dragon souls… could they be eaten?

"Should I… take the risk?" he whispered to himself.

"If I let this chance slip by, I might never get another."

He hovered there, torn between fear and temptation.

After awakening a fragment of his ancient bloodline, he could already feel the tremendous change within himself.

If he truly managed to awaken it completely…what kind of divine power would he possess?
