Chapter 99 - Gathering Storm

Chapter 96 — Gathering Storm

The Imperial Capital of Aetherion was the jewel of the Empire.

Unlike the industrial city of Rukenia, whose skyline was dominated by towering factories, automated workshops, and resource-processing facilities, Aetherion pulsed with life.

Its streets were crowded with merchants, craftsmen, adventurers, NPC citizens, and players from countless merged worlds. Market stalls stretched across entire districts while airships drifted between floating docks above the city. Every corner reflected the wealth and stability the Empire had built over the past decade.

Standing at the city's main gate was Captain Counter, accompanied by several Imperial soldiers.

His assignment was simple.

Escort a very important guest.

A deep mechanical horn echoed across the skies.

Everyone looked upward.

An enormous Imperial cargo airship emerged from the clouds, escorted by two smaller gunships. The vessel slowly descended before landing outside the capital's gates with a thunderous boom.

Its cargo ramp lowered.

Heavy armored soldiers marched out first.

Then—

A lone figure stepped forward.

He wore a long black military coat decorated with silver insignias that identified him as an Imperial Commanding Officer

Commanding Officer Treq.

The officer responsible for several Imperial operations across the Northen territories.

Counter immediately saluted.

"Welcome to Aetherion, Commanding Officer."

Treq returned the salute with a slight nod.

"At ease."

His sharp eyes wandered across the capital.

"...It's been years since I've visited this city."

"It hasn't changed."

Counter smiled faintly.

"Aetherion rarely does."

As the two officers walked toward Imperial Headquarters, Treq quietly observed the bustling streets.

Children played near fountains.

Guild members bargained with merchants.

Blacksmiths displayed newly forged weapons.

Airships constantly arrived and departed from the city's towering docks.

"This..."

Treq muttered.

"This is what we're fighting to protect."

His expression slowly darkened.

"So this is also where the Factory Incident happened."

Counter's footsteps never slowed.

"...Officially."

Neither man said another word.

Both understood the truth behind that incident.

It had never been an accident.

The Resistance had struck deep into Imperial territory.

The Empire simply buried the truth.

Eventually they arrived at the Imperial Strategic Command Building.

The guards immediately opened the massive doors.

Inside the conference chamber...

Commander Frostbyte was already waiting.

"Commanding Officer Treq."

Frostbyte stood.

"It's good to see you again."

Treq gave a respectful salute.

"Commander."

"It's been too long."

The two veterans shook hands before sitting around the massive strategy table.

Maps from dozens of game worlds covered its surface.

Supply routes.

Military deployments.

Trade networks.

Expansion plans.

Every major campaign of the Empire was represented.

Frostbyte immediately began.

"I'll keep this meeting brief."

"Our expansion continues according to schedule."

"However..."

He pointed toward Rukenia.

"Our logistics remain heavily dependent on this city."

"Nearly sixty percent of the Empire's military resources originate there."

"Boss farms."

"Factories."

"Mana crystal refineries."

"Weapon production."

"Currency generation."

"If Rukenia falls..."

"The Empire's military machine will slow dramatically."

Treq silently nodded.

"I expected as much."

"But before discussing logistics..."

Frostbyte folded his hands.

"I want your report."

"The Void."

"...Calamity Echo."

The room instantly became silent.

Treq's expression turned serious.

"Our containment efforts continue."

"But progress is nearly nonexistent."

He placed several classified reports onto the table.

"We are no longer treating it as a powerful monster."

"It is officially classified as a Raid Boss-class Calamity."

"No conventional weapons have damaged it."

"No known magic has affected it."

"It simply refuses to cooperate."

"It doesn't even acknowledge our existence."

Frostbyte narrowed his eyes.

"...Captain Crixz?"

"Still commanding the containment facility."

"She's maintained full lockdown since the creature's arrival."

Treq paused briefly.

"Personally..."

"I don't think it's imprisoned."

"I think..."

"It's allowing us to believe that."

The room became noticeably colder.

Even Frostbyte remained silent for several seconds.

"...Continue."

"The creature has made no attempt to escape."

"No aggressive behavior."

"No communication."

"It simply waits."

"As though..."

"...it's expecting something."

Frostbyte leaned back in his chair.

"...Good."

"As long as it stays contained."

His attention shifted back toward the world map.

"The Empire now governs players from SkyRealm, Eclipse Online, Dominion Frontier, and dozens of smaller merged games."

"Our influence grows every month."

"Our military expands."

"Our economy thrives."

"Our territory continues to spread."

He looked toward everyone present.

"But success creates enemies."

His finger moved across another continent.

"Battle Net."

"CraftWorld."

"NeoVice."

"Warpath."

"The Federations."

"The independent kingdoms."

"Nations and Factions"

"They're watching us."

"They understand what we're building."

Treq crossed his arms.

"If they unite..."

"They could become a serious threat."

"They could."

Frostbyte admitted.

"And that's exactly why they won't."

Counter looked confused.

"...Sir?"

Frostbyte smiled calmly.

"We've already secured alliances."

"The Galactic Nova Empire."

"Several neighboring nations are currently negotiating military cooperation."

"Our influence extends farther than most realize."

His gaze sharpened.

"The future belongs to those willing to shape it."

"The Empire will unite the scattered game worlds."

"Not through chaos..."

"But through order."

Captain Counter hesitated before speaking.

"Commander..."

"What about the Admins?"

"The World Rankers."

"The legendary veterans."

"If they oppose us..."

"One individual could change the outcome of an entire campaign."

"And the other games Admins..."

"They certainly won't allow another nation to dominate every world."

Frostbyte simply smiled.

"...We've planned for that."

His answer raised even more questions than it solved.

Treq eventually broke the silence.

"Speaking of Admins..."

"Where is Administrator Orion?"

"I heard he attended the Grand Council last month."

Frostbyte sighed deeply.

"Helios Reach."

"The trade capital?"

"Yes."

Another sigh escaped him.

"I only hope he isn't causing another diplomatic disaster."

Counter looked confused.

"I thought Administrators rarely interfered."

"They don't."

Frostbyte answered.

"...Until they do."

"And when they decide to act..."

"They somehow create more paperwork than an entire war."

For the first time that day—

Commanding Officer Treq laughed.

"...Some things never change."

Frostbyte could only shake his head in agreement.

As the meeting came to an end, the officers rose from their seats one after another.

Military maps were rolled up.

Orders were prepared.

The Empire had begun moving its pieces.

Outside the command hall, Frostbyte stood before a large window overlooking the capital of Aetherion.

Hundreds of airships crossed the sky.

Thousands of soldiers marched through the streets below.

The Empire was preparing for war.

Yet...

For some reason...

He couldn't shake the uneasy feeling lingering in the back of his mind.

"...Helios Reach..."

he quietly muttered.

"I hope nothing happens."

Meanwhile...

Helios Reach.

The greatest trade city in the Empire.

Unlike the disciplined streets of Aetherion or the industrial landscape of Rukenia, Helios Reach never truly slept.

Merchant caravans from dozens of merged worlds crowded the roads.

Shops displayed equipment originating from SkyRealm, Battle Net, CraftWorld, NeoVice, Eclipse Online, and countless smaller games.

Hunters.

Mercenaries.

Guilds.

Adventurers.

Even independent kingdoms sent representatives to trade within its walls.

It was the one place where nearly everyone eventually crossed paths.

High above the city...

Another Imperial airship slowly descended toward the central dock.

The crowd below barely paid it any attention.

A lone man stepped off the vessel.

He wore no armor.

No Imperial uniform.

Only a long dark coat that concealed most of his appearance.

Yet the Imperial guards immediately straightened their backs and saluted the moment they saw him.

No words were exchanged.

None were necessary.

The man simply walked forward.

Every soldier instinctively stepped aside.

His presence alone carried an overwhelming pressure.

An Administrator.

One of the few beings capable of standing alongside the strongest players in the New World.

He stopped for a brief moment and looked across the crowded marketplace.

His calm eyes slowly scanned the endless sea of people.

Players.

NPCs.

Merchants.

Travelers.

Then...

For reasons even he couldn't explain...

His gaze lingered toward the western district of the city.

A faint smile appeared.

"...Interesting."

Without another word, he continued walking into the bustling streets.

Completely unaware...

That somewhere within the same city—

Four wanted fugitives had also just arrived.

Ryze.

The Resistance's Starlink Sniper.

SK.

The former Imperial officer known as The Reaper.

Volt.

The Empire's most wanted infiltrator.

And Blaze...

The mysterious veteran whose existence had begun to unsettle even the Empire's highest command.

None of them knew it yet.

But fate had already brought every major player onto the same board.

And Helios Reach...

Was about to become the spark that ignited the next great conflict.
