Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: He Can’t Save You!

Finn didn't answer. He lifted a hand to brush aside the hair scattered across Kristen's cheek. "Kris, you know I've always treasured you. I can't bear to lift a finger against you. But you don't know—every night in my dreams, I'm wanting you…"

Realizing what he intended, Kristen's face flushed hot with fury. "Shameless!"

Her palm had just come up when he caught it. Finn's voice dropped, tinged with contempt. "I've spoiled you too much…"

He lowered his head, aiming for her lips.

Kristen turned her face and his warm mouth landed on her cheek, a wave of revulsion rippling through her. She struggled hard.

"Let go of me. Finn, let me go."

Catching sight, in the corner of her eye, of the woman still by the pillar, shame and anger burned. "Grace is outside. You're not afraid she'll find out?"

Finn paused for a beat, then his mouth curved in a cold smile. "Why would I be afraid?"

Kristen's breath hitched, disbelief flooding her eyes.

"Don't look at me like that." Finn's fingers stroked her face; his Adam's apple bobbed. "I said she and I aren't what you think…"

Kristen tried to throw off his hand, but he seized her wrists and pinned them above her head against the window.

"Are you crazy, Finn?!"

If he had an exhibitionist kink, she certainly didn't.

"Let go of me. Let go!"

"Delete the records," Finn murmured, lips nearly brushing her ear, "or I'll take you right here."

The heat of his breath sent a cold shiver through Kristen. "Finn, you're… disgusting!"

He could do all this for Grace and still claim there was nothing between them.

"Delete them or not?" Finn tilted her chin up, forcing her to meet his eyes.

Kristen bit down on her lip, still wavering—when frantic pounding rattled the window.

Martin slammed his palms against the glass, voice raw with panic and rage. "Open up! Finn, open the door!"

Hope barely flickered in Kristen's eyes when Finn's icy whisper cut in at her ear: "He can't save you."

"Don't you dare lay a hand on her, Finn!" Martin's fury boiled over into curses.

Kristen hadn't expected Martin to be this worried. Heat pricked at her eyes; she pressed her lips together and said nothing.

Finn's brows drew tight. His fingers hovered at her chest. Kristen couldn't bear his touch—she was just about to speak—

Knock, knock.

Even, unhurried taps on the window sliced through the air. Finn turned and saw a long, pale hand; the cufflink at the wrist was very familiar.

He froze for a second, then released Kristen, straightened his clothing, and unlocked the door to get out.

Kristen grabbed her phone and slipped out at once. She heard Finn's voice: "Jason, what are you doing here?"

Her legs nearly buckled when she touched the ground, but Martin caught her quickly and shrugged off his jacket over her shoulders.

Across the car, Jason stood, idly adjusting his cuff. "Passing by. Saw your car. Thought I'd say hello."

When his gaze lifted to Kristen, a chill surged in the darkness of his eyes.

Finn felt something off but couldn't place it. Following Jason's line of sight to Kristen, he said in a tone of pure entitlement, "I was just messing around with Kris."

Side quips

- Finn: I was just messing around with Kris!

- Jason: Heh. (The knife in hand is itching to fly.)
