Chapter 102 - SO2-27. Forgiveness on the Road

The horse's hooves struck against the silent road, each sound echoing into the stillness of the morning. Elaine sat behind Viremont, her arms wrapped tightly around her mother's waist, the cloak brushing against her face as the wind carried them forward. The world was hushed, the trees unmoving, the air heavy with secrets.

For a long while, neither spoke. The silence was not empty — it was filled with memories, grief, and questions unasked. Finally, Elaine's voice broke through, trembling, fragile.

"He is dead, isn't he?"

Viremont's face widened, her eyes closing as sadness overtook her. She drew in a long breath, her shoulders sagging under the weight of truth. Her voice came low, almost breaking.

"Yes. After his death… I was sentenced to be banished into the chambers of death. I escaped, but with little will. It was my end. But then I remembered — you. Why would I leave my daughter in grave as I passed on? So I leaped back into life, so that I could meet you one last time."

Elaine's eyes blurred with tears. A single drop slid down her cheek, clear and sharp. She whispered, "Well… he was at his end. The others would have killed him if not his disease did first. So…"

Her voice faltered, but her arms tightened around Viremont, clenching as if to hold her mother against time itself.

"I knew the others hated you," Elaine continued, her voice trembling. "At some point… I did too."

Viremont lowered her gaze, her lips pressed tight, her silence heavy.

"But now," Elaine said, her voice rising with fragile strength, "I know people can change for the better. And the others… they were more cruel, more rotten than you ever were. So… Mother, I forgive you."

The words hung in the air, luminous, fragile, yet unbreakable.

Viremont's tears fell freely, her arms reaching back to embrace Elaine. They clung to each other, mother and daughter, bound by grief and forgiveness, riding forward into the silence.

The road stretched endlessly, but for a moment, it felt lighter.

Elaine's mind drifted, carried by memory. She remembered the time she had spent in the Blair mansion after Carmine's rescue. The halls had been cold, the air sharp, the shadows long. Her first cousin had stood by the door, her voice cruel, her words cutting.

"Why don't you just kill her?" the cousin had said, her tone dripping with venom.

The wind had grown cold then, biting against Elaine's skin, whispering of choices and consequences.

But Elaine had not taken that step. She had not chosen the path of regret. She had held back, resisting the darkness that threatened to consume her.

Now, riding with Viremont, she was glad. Glad she had not taken steps she would regret. Glad that everything had changed for the better.

The horse moved steadily, its breath steaming in the chill. The trees bent slightly as the wind shifted, carrying whispers of the past and promises of the future. Elaine leaned against her mother, her heart heavy yet lighter than it had been in years.

Viremont's voice broke the silence again, soft, trembling. "I thought I had lost you forever. But here you are. And here I am. Forgiveness… it is more than I deserve."

Elaine shook her head, her voice firm. "It is what you deserve. Because you came back. Because you chose me."

The road carried them forward, the silence broken only by the rhythm of hooves and the beating of hearts.

The forest opened slightly, revealing a stretch of land bathed in pale light. The air shifted, carrying the scent of earth and memory. Elaine and Viremont rode on, their figures framed against the horizon, their bond renewed, their path uncertain but shared.

The silence was no longer heavy. It was filled with hope.
