Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

Logan looked at the message on his phone and typed: "What do you need?"

Over the years, he had served many customers, some careless ones who left things in his car and then wrote to him asking about them.

Although Logan hadn't worked these last few days, it was possible that some people just now realized they had lost something.

Soon, the other person replied: "I hope you can help me deliver someone."

Logan was surprised. Uber drivers were not lacking in Santa Fe, and in all his years in the sector, this was the first time someone had specifically requested his service.

After thinking for a moment, Logan declined: "I'm sorry, I no longer work as an Uber driver. If you need help, you can ask someone else."

However, as soon as he sent the message, the other person quickly replied: "Wolverine, please, I have no choice but to ask for your help. No one else can guarantee her safety."

Seeing the words "Wolverine," Logan's pupils contracted sharply.

The other person knew who he was!

Although many people knew the name Wolverine, and he had even appeared in several children's comics, very few could find and recognize him nowadays.

Logan's expression turned serious, and he quickly typed: "Who are you?"

He needed to find out the reason for their contact, otherwise, he could be in great danger!

"My name is Gabriela, and I am a nurse," the other person replied. Judging by the speed of the response, she seemed very anxious. "I have a girl with me named Laura. She urgently needs to go to North Dakota. We need your help, please, otherwise she will be in great danger. Please help us!"

"Laura?" Logan was stunned, his mind went blank for an instant, and vague and hidden memories deep in his mind began to awaken upon hearing that familiar name.

After a while, Logan came back to his senses.

He remembered some details of the aging Wolverine's story before his transmigration.

Now, he had a daughter in this world named Laura Kinney.

Of course, to many, it would be an unknown name, and most would prefer to call her X-23.

And although Laura was nominally his daughter, she was not his biological daughter.

She was a new generation of mutants created in the mutant experimentation lab by Dr. Rice through cruel methods.

X-23 was her designation in the lab, and Laura Kinney was the name given to her by the nurse who cared for her.

"I didn't expect Gabriella to bring Laura so soon," Logan muttered to himself.

Knowing the plot of Wolverine's later years, he was not surprised by Laura's appearance.

He also knew that if Laura's situation was not handled properly, he, the Professor, and Caliban could be implicated and die in this transitionary war.

In that instant, Logan realized that since Gabriella had brought Laura to Santa Fe, it is very likely that Donald Pierce was also there!

Immediately, Logan realized the seriousness of the situation.

Donald Pierce was a hunter specializing in capturing mutants for the laboratory. He had a powerful mercenary group, and heavy weapons and even armed helicopters.

Furthermore, he possessed maximum government authorization; as long as his mission was to capture mutants, his armed helicopters could freely patrol the entire United States!

He was undoubtedly a very dangerous enemy!

Just as Logan was pondering this, his phone vibrated again; it was another message from Gabriella:

"Logan, time is running out, we need your help!"

Reading the message on his phone, Logan quickly replied: "Don't worry, I will help you escort Laura, but not now. You must take Laura and hide. Donald is sweeping the entire city; the slightest movement could draw his attention. I cannot meet you at such a dangerous time. I will contact you when I have a chance."

If he didn't know Laura's identity, Logan wouldn't have accepted so hastily.

But now that he knew Laura was his daughter, Logan couldn't stand idly by, even if her appearance was not his intention.

She carried his genes, and Logan understood the importance of the new mutants for the species and for his future plans.

However, this was not the right time to meet.

Donald's power was greater than they imagined; he had many ways to obtain information, and he could even be collaborating with the government.

If he came to Santa Fe, he would probably discover that Wolverine was also there.

This was extremely dangerous for Logan and Professor X!

Gabriella seemed somewhat perplexed by Logan's quick acceptance, and after a long pause, she replied: "We are hiding in a motel on the outskirts of Santa Fe, and for now we are safe."

She had expected that begging Logan for help would be difficult. His rapid acceptance surprised her, and she couldn't help but sigh with relief.

Logan replied: "Please be careful, don't go out unless necessary. I will contact you when the time is right."

After replying, Logan turned off the phone and left it on the nightstand. Too much had happened that day: Chris's threats, Laura's plea for help, and Donald's presence in the shadows; Logan had to handle each situation carefully.

His inner turmoil led him to take a cigarette from the pack on the nightstand and light it. The crimson flame stood out in the room.

Logan, with the cigarette dangling from his lips, looked serious.

"What should I do now...?" he muttered to himself through the smoke.

Gabriella's appearance undoubtedly disrupted all his plans.

Initially, he only had to deal with the Lawrence family, which, while a challenge, he was confident he could handle.

After all, the awakening of his new ability had given him hope that his self-healing factor could be repaired, and once fully recovered, a local mob family wouldn't pose a great threat to him.

But now, besides the Lawrence family, there was also that son of a bitch, Donald.

This put Logan in a desperate situation.

Just then, his phone rang again.

Chris: "James, no, Logan, I hope I didn't bother you, but there's something I forgot to mention. You know the Lawrence family mansion, right? If not, you can ask around. I think most people know the address. That is, you have to come tomorrow, how about 11 am? Someone will be waiting for you at the door."

Logan was momentarily surprised to receive the message from Chris, wondering what he was plotting. But since Chris had leverage over him, Logan couldn't refuse the invitation...

...

And the Lawrence family mansion was far from having a quiet night. The arrival of these two distinguished guests required Mr. Lawrence and Chris, two of Santa Fe's wealthiest businessmen, to receive them jointly.

"Welcome, Dr. Rice, Mr. Donald," Chris greeted them cordially in the living room of the Lawrence Mansion.

Mr. Lawrence and Dr. Rice had previously collaborated and knew each other well.

Chris invited them to sit down, and after the servants served tea, Lawrence dismissed everyone, leaving only the four of them alone in the opulent living room.

"I hear Dr. Rice's work is quite demanding. I assume you are in Santa Fe for Wolverine," Lawrence said, sitting on the plush sofa, an expensive cigar between his fingers, squinting at Rice, who was opposite him.

Rice, who was about to drink tea, paused, looked up abruptly and asked in surprise: "You mean Logan Howlett is also in Santa Fe?"

Hearing the question, Lawrence and Chris were perplexed and then laughed: "It seems I was wrong. But Wolverine is indeed stationed in Santa Fe. We ran into him a few days ago; he's not doing well, he looks like a dying old wolf."

Donald, fiddling with his mechanical arm, smiled scornfully: "We are here for a little one, a new product from our lab."

He paused and turned to Rice: "Doctor, it seems Gabriella found out about Wolverine's presence through some special means and specifically came to ask him for help. After all... that little girl has Wolverine's genes."

"It seems true. We initially thought of asking the Lawrence family for help to search for her, but it seems it's no longer necessary. Keep an eye on Wolverine; perhaps we will find the little girl through him soon."

Dr. Rice nodded.

He ordered Donald: "Go interrogate Wolverine. If you get the information, great. If not, don't worry, we could lure the little girl through him."

Chris quickly waved his hand and said: "No need. I've already notified him; he'll be here tomorrow."

This surprised Rice. "Will he obey your orders?"

Rice hated Logan, but he also knew his character well; that guy wouldn't take orders from others easily.

Chris smiled sinisterly: "We have leverage over him; he won't dare to disobey."

Lawrence narrowed his eyes and interrupted: "Dr. Rice, I hope you don't make things too difficult for him when he arrives tomorrow. After all, he is a useful tool; he can help us solve many problems." Dr. Rice chuckled: "

Of course, our current goal is only the little girl. As for Wolverine, you can keep him for now."

In his opinion, the greatest value of an excellent mutant lay in lying on a cold bed in a lab.

For Science, for Humanity, he would squeeze out every last drop of value!
