Chapter 25 - Chapter 25

Naruto sat on the grass, the sunlight cutting through Konoha's canopy in pale gold strips. Beside him, Hinata shifted nervously, her fingers brushing against the hem of her jacket.

"Na–Naruto-kun… what's the matter with you lately…?"

Her voice was barely above a whisper. For days now, Naruto's training had been… strange. Cruel, even. The once-laughing boy who used to charge headlong into danger with that foolish grin had grown quiet. Colder. His eyes no longer held that endless warmth—they shimmered instead with the stillness of ice.

Naruto turned to her, a small, practiced smile forming on his lips. "I'm fine, Hinata."

It was a kind smile—but hollow. The kind of smile people wear when they don't want to admit how lost they really are. Hinata fidgeted with her hands. "If… if Naruto-kun has something on his mind, you can tell me… I want to share it with you…"

Her voice faded into the summer breeze. If not for Naruto's heightened hearing—his newly awakened Ten'on—he might not have caught it at all.

He looked at her, really looked at her this time, and something in his chest cracked. The walls he'd built, the cold armor forged through cruel training—it all faltered under that worried gaze.

Warmth seeped back in.

Naruto knew he had changed. He could feel it in the way people looked at him now—with unease, even fear. But seeing Hinata's trembling concern made him realize how far he'd drifted.

His training had been born from desperation—to grow stronger, to survive, to stand tall in a world that crushed the weak. But beneath all of that, beneath the sweat and blood, was a single reason.

Hinata.

He'd never forgotten that moment. "I really want to protect Hinata."

That was his vow. His purpose.

He had bargained with the Kyuubi itself, taking on fragments of its chakra in exchange for understanding the ancient rhythm of Rikudō Shingon—a divine voice that mocked him even as it guided. He endured it all for this simple, quiet girl who once reached out to him when no one else did.

But now… that same training had frightened her. He clenched his fists. "I'm sorry, Hinata. I won't make you worry again."

This time, his smile was genuine—radiant and alive. It was the same old Naruto, the boy who refused to give up, no matter how much pain came his way.

Hinata's eyes widened. "Na–Naruto-kun…"

Her voice trembled as her lips curved into a shy, happy smile. She didn't ask what had changed. She didn't need to.

"Hina-chan," Naruto said, his grin widening, "come walk with me this afternoon."

Hinata's face went red instantly. "Eh? Oh—o-okay!"

Even though he always escorted her home after training, this felt different. This was… a date. The word alone sent her heart spinning.

Naruto chuckled softly at her flustered expression. Warm sunlight, a soft breeze, and Hinata's shy joy—it felt like the world was reminding him what he was fighting for.

Far away, inside the Hokage's office, the crystal ball shimmered.

Sarutobi Hiruzen exhaled in relief as the image of Naruto and Hinata filled the glass. "It seems… the boy is finding his balance again," he murmured.

Beside him, Kakashi folded his arms, an amused smile under his mask. "Guess it took a Hyuga girl to do what we couldn't."

He had been worried. He'd seen Naruto's disturbing "training"—crushing cicadas, testing his own cruelty to steel his heart. He understood what Naruto was doing, but he feared what it would turn him into.

Sarutobi nodded slowly. "The path of a shinobi is cruel. But… if he still has someone he wishes to protect, then his heart is safe."

Their gazes softened as the crystal shimmered again, showing Naruto laughing with Hinata under the Konoha sun.

Hiruzen smiled faintly. "The boy's heart… and his spirit. Both inherited from Minato. Konoha's next sun is rising."
