Chapter 5 - RESTLESS NIGHT

It didn't surprise Farnicki that Wojcik let him leave early. He didn't expect any less from a suburban Inspector. There was plenty of work to be done judging from the many unsolved cases Ivan had discovered in his desk, however his superior didn't think them important enough. Whatever the case may be, he knew he shouldn't care so much about the whole situation. In the end, he was in Resovia for reasons that had nothing to do with its police station and once he was done, he would leave the Sub Sarmatians.

The extra free time came in handy, though. And Farnicki didn't want to waste any of it. Before heading to the Old Town, he first stopped at his place to grab a raincoat. The rain served him well. There was almost no one outside and because of the bad visibility the few pedestrians didn't notice the green scooter manoeuvring through the narrow streets of the Old Town. Ivan hid his chopper a few blocks away from Liberation Street, in between two rubbish containers. The rest of the way he walked by foot.

The residents of Liberation Street switched on their lights one by one. Just a couple of windows remained dark, among which was Agnes' window. Farnicki figured she went to bed early. After all, she had a bad day.

Right in front of the apartment block rose Saint Joseph Church, a red brick Romanesque building. The house of worship was surrounded by bushes and trees. One tree in particular, a massive oak, stood out in the Old Town's landscape. The oak towered over the neighbourhood, almost exceeding the height of the apartment complex. Farnicki had already tried climbing into it and found out that, at a certain height, he could look right into her bedroom window. He waited until it was dark and mounted the tree. Luckily, there were no street lights next to the oak, so no one in the building could see him hiding in the tree.

Farnicki had seen her coming home. Just like the previous night, she wasn't alone. A tall man in blue sportswear was holding onto her waist as they were walking down the avenue. She lived in Resovia since April and had already dated three different men. Ivan visited the clubs she hung out at, and it shocked him finding out what kind of places those were. She started to lose his respect back in Wroclaw, and every day, with every new revelation about her, she kept falling in his eyes. However, he continued to follow her, no matter how much pain that caused him.

Farnicki watched her leading the stranger into her bedroom. They stumbled inside and fell on her bed as they were making out passionately. She didn't even have the decency to close the curtains. Next, she undid her clothes and let that other man do things to her. There was a time when Farnicki believed he was the only guy she was intimate with. He knew all those caresses, kisses, touches, and movements and could almost feel those on his skin. But those sensations had lost their meaning as the woman he used to love had desecrated the remembrance of their time together.

An invisible force pressed against Farnicki's temples, as if he had squeezed his head into a very tight helmet. The longer he watched those two, the more pressure he felt. The pain became unbearable. Ivan knew how to stop it, but he couldn't just leave without interrupting the two adulterers. He felt a small, but heavy cubic object in the pocket of his raincoat. He couldn't remember what that object was and how he got hold of it, but he was subconsciously aware of it the whole time because its weight pulled down the waterproof clothing. And how convenient and useful was that object in that moment of blind rage. He aimed and threw the cube right into her window. The block hit the target accurately, nearly shattering the glass, forming a spider shaped crack on its surface.

The sudden, loud thud scared the two lovers. Her yell sobered Farnicki up and he realised how stupid he was for having done that. He tried to get away from there before they noticed him, but he was too slow. As he was descending from the tree, he heard them both screaming profanities at him through the open window. They guy threatened to break his arms when he caught him, but Farnicki was already on the ground and running away from Liberation Street. They had no idea who he was, so even if they called the police, they wouldn't have anything specific to tell them about the thug who broke their window. Ivan retrieved his scooter and drove home, pleased with himself.

At least, he thought, she will close the curtains from now on.
