Chapter 484 - Chapter 484

Manchester United took the kickoff.

Ling rolled the ball back toward Havertz, then immediately turned and sprinted into Liverpool's half, positioning himself near Van Dijk.

The Dutch defender's awareness sharpened at once.

Others might have underestimated Ling after his lighter January schedule.

Van Dijk would not.

He had suffered too many times against United's number 7 to offer him even one careless second.

"Liverpool press immediately. Havertz uses his body to hold off Fabinho and just manages to find Herrera moving ahead of him."

Beglin noted, "Havertz has clearly been working on his strength since joining United. Earlier in the season, Fabinho might have knocked him off that ball completely."

Herrera played it across the middle.

Ling received with his back partially turned to goal.

Van Dijk stepped forward, expecting him to secure possession or attempt to roll away.

Instead, Ling turned halfway and shot almost immediately.

"LING—EARLY STRIKE!"

The ball clipped Van Dijk's leg and changed direction toward the Liverpool goal.

Alisson reacted sharply, launching himself sideways and pushing it beyond the post.

Old Trafford erupted!

Ling flexed his hand in frustration.

Van Dijk's pressure had denied him enough space to generate full power. Without that intervention, the shot might already have beaten Alisson.

Van Dijk felt cold sweat gathering beneath his shirt.

'What kind of shot was that?'

Ling had always been unpredictable, but the speed of the decision was new. Van Dijk had expected a duel and nearly found himself punished before the duel had even begun.

"Keep going!"

Ling waved his teammates forward and ran toward the near post for the resulting corner.

Havertz raised a hand to signal the delivery, then curled the ball into the penalty area.

Ling suddenly changed direction and attacked the far post.

"Stay with him!" Alisson shouted.

Van Dijk needed no reminder.

He followed Ling's run tightly, while Gomez closed from the other side. Trapped between both center-backs, Ling could not reach the cross, which sailed over him and out of play.

On the touchline, Klopp released a quiet breath.

His confidence during the press conference had been genuine, but confidence did not eliminate fear once the match began.

Virgil van Dijk was Liverpool's greatest defensive weapon.

He was also the player Klopp could least afford to lose.

Van Dijk had played almost every meaningful minute in the Premier League and Champions League.

Klopp could rotate Mané or Salah. He could survive a temporary injury to Alisson.

Removing Van Dijk, however, changed the entire personality of the defense.

Liverpool had already seen the consequences in the League Cup, when a heavily rotated side without him conceded five goals to Arsenal.

In the league, with Van Dijk present, Liverpool had defeated the same opponent 3–1.

The difference was obvious.

But even an iron man could not remain at his physical peak forever. Van Dijk's recent performances had contained small mistakes and moments of fatigue.

Most opponents lacked the quality to exploit them.

Manchester United did not.

And Ling certainly did not.

Then the match changed at the opposite end.

Trent Alexander-Arnold received possession on the right and surged beyond Ashley Young.

"Alexander-Arnold advances, but he does not continue toward the byline. He finds Firmino moving centrally instead!"

United's midfield shifted quickly, compressing the space around Liverpool's false nine.

Firmino took one touch, drawing Kanté and Matić inward.

Then his heel redirected the ball toward the opposite side.

"OH, THAT IS CLEVER!"

From the overhead angle, Liverpool's manipulation became clear.

The attack had begun on United's left, dragging the entire midfield structure across before Firmino's backheel released the ball into the space vacated on the right side of United's defense.

Mané exploded into it.

A fierce figure in red accelerated toward the penalty area before Wan-Bissaka could recover.

His left foot crashed through the ball.

Bang!

De Gea reacted instinctively, throwing himself across goal. His fingertips reached the shot but could not divert it far enough.

The ball changed direction slightly and flew into the top corner.

0–1!

For a moment, Old Trafford fell silent beneath the roar from the traveling supporters.

Peter Drury's voice followed the ball into the net.

"MANÉ STRIKES FOR LIVERPOOL!"

"A move begun on one shore and finished on the other—a sweeping change of direction, a backheel of brilliant awareness from Firmino, and Mané arrives like a flame through the space Manchester United left behind!"

"Liverpool have come to Old Trafford for the summit, and they have planted the first flag!"

Beglin quickly broke down the goal.

"That is outstanding from Liverpool. Trent draws United toward one side, Firmino recognizes the defensive shift, and the backheel removes the entire midfield screen. Wan-Bissaka is left trying to defend too much ground, and Mané's finish is excellent."

Mané sprinted toward the corner and punched the air in front of the Liverpool supporters.

He had been substituted early in the previous match and had arrived at Old Trafford eager to prove himself.

There could be no better stage than the North West Derby.

Near the center circle, several Manchester United players remained motionless, staring toward the net.

Ling clapped sharply.

"Come on, lads! Don't stand there—get the ball back!"

His voice cut through the disappointment.

"The match has only just started. We've got plenty of time."

The frustration disappeared from De Gea's face almost immediately.

Ling was back.

For some reason, that made conceding feel less frightening.

It created the quiet certainty that someone would lead them forward and find the equalizer.

One by one, the Manchester United players returned to their positions.

Liverpool had struck first.

The North West Derby was only beginning.

...

Liverpool no longer pressed with the reckless intensity of their earlier years.

Klopp's side had learned when to hunt and when to retreat, conserving their energy inside a compact midfield block before exploding forward whenever possession changed hands.

Their evolution was clear.

This was no longer a team that relied solely on emotion, speed, and gegenpressing. Liverpool had become more mature, capable of controlling the rhythm of a match and choosing the exact moments when their pressure would hurt most.

With the lead secured, their entire formation dropped several yards and constructed a dense defensive line across midfield, inviting Manchester United forward without allowing any obvious route through.

The moment Kanté passed into Havertz, Fabinho and Henderson sprang from their positions. One attacked the German directly while the other moved to close his nearest passing lane.

Six months earlier, the pressure might have overwhelmed him.

Havertz was no longer the slender newcomer who had first arrived at Carrington, however.

A carefully managed strength program had made him far more comfortable with the physical demands of English football, and countless hours of training had sharpened his awareness under pressure.

He held Fabinho off with his back, dragged the ball across his body, and turned halfway around the Brazilian.

Henderson arrived from the side, but Havertz had already anticipated him, slipping away with a delicate second touch.

"That is excellent from Havertz," Jim Beglin said. "He absorbs the first challenge, recognizes the second, and escapes without slowing United's attack."

Rather than hold the ball for too long, Havertz immediately spread it toward the left.

Ashley Young controlled the pass and attacked Alexander-Arnold.

For all the danger Trent offered going forward, his defensive positioning could still betray his age.

Professor Young needed only one glance to understand what the younger full-back intended.

He shaped as though he would accelerate down the outside, drawing Trent into the chase, then stopped abruptly.

Alexander-Arnold carried on for another two steps before desperately trying to recover.

Ashley Young lifted his head.

Ling was moving toward the left side of the penalty area, but Van Dijk followed him step for step, using his body to force the United forward away from goal.

From a conventional angle, there was no pass available.

Young knew that.

His right foot crossed the ball anyway.

Thump!

The delivery flashed toward the near side of Liverpool's six-yard box.

Van Dijk remained behind Ling, pressing firmly into his back while calling toward the goalkeeper.

"Alisson!"

The Brazilian moved forward with both hands raised, expecting to claim the ball and begin a counterattack.

Mané and Salah had already positioned themselves higher up the pitch; one accurate throw could send Liverpool racing into the space United had abandoned.

Then Van Dijk felt Ling's body shift.

His expression changed instantly.

He drove forward with greater force, trying to knock him away from the flight of the cross, but Ling had already stolen half a step.

Beneath the floodlights, Manchester United's number 7 leapt with his back toward goal and twisted around his own axis. Instead of attempting to turn fully or bring the ball down, he flicked his head backward at the last possible moment.

Crack!

The contact was delicate rather than powerful, yet it gave the ball a beautiful, unexpected arc.

Alisson had already stepped toward the near post.

He could only stop, twist his body, and watch as the ball floated behind him, dipped beneath the crossbar, and nestled inside the opposite top corner.

1–1!
