Chapter 486 - Chapter 486

Inside the home dressing room, Mourinho stood before the tactical board and briefly reviewed the first half.

"There were still problems in our buildup. The connection between midfield and attack was too predictable, and we didn't create the variety we planned."

He moved several magnets across the board, widening United's shape.

"In the second half, combine attacks through the middle with movement on the wings. Use the full width of the pitch instead of trying to force everything through one area."

"When we defend, hold your positions but don't become statues. Recognize when to stay zonal and when to follow your man. Liverpool are constantly changing their attacking positions, so you have to communicate."

After explaining several smaller adjustments, Mourinho turned toward Ling.

"How are you feeling?"

Although Ling had scored twice, his combinations with the rest of the team had been relatively limited.

The first goal had required a moment of individual imagination, while the second had come after Van Dijk committed too aggressively.

"Not bad. I'm fully warmed up now, and the rhythm feels much more natural than it did at kickoff."

Ling removed his sweat-soaked shirt and reached for a clean one.

The intensity had been enormous. Liverpool's pressing and physical pressure were gradually draining his stamina, but everything remained within his tolerance.

More importantly, he had noticed Van Dijk's sharpness declining as the half progressed.

During the final few minutes, the Dutchman had already begun relying on fouls and physical obstruction more often.

"Good," Mourinho said. "Liverpool may have to replace Van Dijk around the hour mark if his condition continues to drop. Whether Klopp takes him off or leaves him there, we attack that area."

"If he stays, make him run."

"If he goes, test the replacement immediately."

The fifteen-minute interval passed quickly.

Both teams returned to the pitch, and as expected, Liverpool emerged with far greater aggression.

Klopp frequently used halftime to reignite his players, encouraging them to raise the tempo sharply during the first five minutes and catch their opponents before they had fully settled.

The strategy almost worked immediately.

"Salah escapes Ashley Young, but Kanté arrives in support and forces him toward the touchline!"

"A clever backheel from Salah finds Henderson behind him. Liverpool don't attempt the short combination this time—Henderson clips a diagonal ball straight into the penalty area!"

"MANÉ HAS BROKEN BEYOND WAN-BISSAKA!"

Mané stretched for the dropping pass and redirected it toward goal.

De Gea reacted instinctively, throwing out his right leg and blocking the ball behind for a corner.

"DE GEA!" Peter Drury exclaimed. "Liverpool began the second half like a side released from a cage, but Manchester United's goalkeeper has barred the door!"

The Spaniard climbed to his feet, clenched both fists, and roared.

He had won the Premier League Golden Glove the previous season, and his form had only improved since then. Retaining that honor was one objective; winning another Yashin Trophy was another.

"Brilliant!"

Maguire grabbed the sides of De Gea's head and shouted directly into his face, spraying him with spit.

"Watch the corner," De Gea replied, wiping his cheek against his sleeve in disgust.

Maguire had avoided any serious lapse recently, but history had taught the goalkeeper to remain cautious whenever the enormous center-back became too confident.

"Relax. My aerial defending is flawless."

Maguire grinned.

Liverpool delivered the corner toward the near post moments later.

Thiago Silva had already read the trajectory. He stepped in front of Firmino and powered the ball beyond the penalty area with his forehead.

The danger appeared to have passed.

Then the clearance dropped in front of Fabinho.

"Fabinho waits on the edge of the box. He shapes his body for the volley—what a strike!"

The shot flew through the crowd and struck Maguire's thigh.

De Gea had already committed himself toward the original trajectory.

The deflection sent the ball spinning in the opposite direction, leaving him stranded as it rolled inside the other side of the net.

2–2.

Old Trafford fell silent for a heartbeat before the traveling section erupted.

"LIVERPOOL ARE LEVEL!"

"Fabinho struck it, Maguire redirected it, and De Gea was sent one way while the ball wandered cruelly toward the other!"

"Three minutes into the second half, the North West Derby has been reset once again."

The final touch had come from Maguire, and the goal was officially recorded as an own goal.

Liverpool's supporters celebrated as though momentum itself had changed shirts.

An equalizer so soon after halftime could damage United's confidence and make their defenders hesitate whenever another shot came through traffic.

From their perspective, Liverpool's chances had suddenly risen dramatically.

They even offered Maguire mocking thumbs-up gestures from the away section.

Maguire remained frozen, still trying to understand what had happened. When reality finally settled over him, he gripped his head.

"Shit."

Could he genuinely be blamed?

Not really.

No defender could have predicted that Fabinho's volley would strike his thigh at precisely the angle required to send De Gea the wrong way.

That did not stop the guilt from arriving.

Ling had worked relentlessly to turn the match around, scoring twice to give United the lead, and Maguire felt as though he had erased all of that effort with one accidental touch.

"Harry."

Ling walked over and struck him firmly on the back of the head.

"Some things can't be avoided. Stop staring at the grass and look forward. There are more than forty minutes left, and you can't spend all of them holding your head."

He gestured toward De Gea.

"David isn't blaming you. None of us are. Forget the guilt and keep playing."

"Ling's right," Thiago Silva added. "I scored own goals when I was younger too. Alessandro Nesta never blamed me. He said those moments could make a center-back calmer and more mature."

Claiming it had happened frequently might have been a slight exaggeration, but the intention was good.

In the commentary box, Carragher was far less sympathetic.

"An own goal! Is this the standard of Manchester United's center-backs?"

He burst into laughter, all the frustration from Ling's first-half goals disappearing at once.

Gary Neville turned toward him with a grim smile.

"Interesting coming from you. The player who has scored the most goals against Liverpool is Ling. Henry is second. And you might be third."

Carragher's laughter immediately weakened.

During his career, he had once scored twice in a North West Derby.

Unfortunately, both goals had gone into Liverpool's net.

Across his career, he had accumulated seven own goals and become one of the most prolific local scorers against his own club.

"You're still talking about something that happened more than ten years ago?" Carragher protested.

"Of course I am. I remember it beautifully. I crossed from the right, and you headed it straight into the top corner."

Neville described the scene with such enthusiasm that the commentary desk descended into chaos.

On the pitch, Liverpool had already restarted.

Encouraged by the equalizer, they attacked with renewed intensity.

Their full-backs repeatedly pushed forward, while Salah and Mané combined with Firmino in tight spaces around United's midfield block.

Kanté became the busiest player on the pitch, appearing in one channel before sprinting across to reinforce another.

Even Ling was forced to drop several yards during the buildup, helping United escape Liverpool's pressure.

Van Dijk, meanwhile, no longer followed him everywhere.

The Dutchman stepped higher to support Liverpool's attacks and left Gomez with more responsibility whenever Ling retreated.

"Wijnaldum changes the angle and releases Mané down the left!"

"Wan-Bissaka is half a step behind and wisely brings him down before he can enter the penalty area."

The referee awarded a free kick near the left corner of the box.

Liverpool worked it short toward the middle, where Fabinho arrived for another strike. This time, Kanté disturbed his balance and prevented clean contact.

Thump!

The ball struck Maguire squarely in the torso.

For one terrible moment, De Gea probably wondered whether it would deflect into the opposite corner again.

Instead, it dropped safely, and Maguire launched it forward with a huge clearance.

Van Dijk immediately turned and raced back toward Ling.

The two charged beneath the dropping ball, shoulders colliding and arms fighting for position.

"A tremendous physical contest!"

"Van Dijk is struggling to match Ling's acceleration—he brings him down!"

The defender grabbed Ling and dragged him to the turf before the United forward could break free.

The referee produced a yellow card.

Liverpool's supporters released a collective breath.

The foul had stopped what could easily have become another one-on-one. Had Van Dijk hesitated for even half a second, Ling would have escaped beyond him with only Gomez and Alisson remaining.

A yellow card seemed a reasonable price.

United's counterattack had at least interrupted Liverpool's rhythm. Klopp's side dropped back into shape, recovering their breath before preparing the next pressing wave.

Mourinho pointed repeatedly toward Liverpool's number 4.

Target him.

Faria watched the gesture with some uncertainty.

"Do you really think Klopp will substitute him? Even when Virgil isn't at his best, he still organizes their entire defense. Without him, they could become much more vulnerable."

"If Klopp leaves him on, we continue attacking the weakness," Mourinho replied calmly. "If he removes him, we attack the replacement."

The own goal had not altered his plan.

Van Dijk had already been forced into several mistakes, and every direct battle with Ling consumed more of his remaining energy.

Mourinho intended to keep wearing down Liverpool's defense until either the player or the structure around him finally broke.

Besides, there was no guarantee Maguire would not create another surprise at the opposite end.

In the 63rd minute, Grealish collected the ball on the right.

Robertson closed him down, but Grealish stopped abruptly before accelerating again, creating half a yard. Rather than crossing, he dragged the ball backward and began cutting inside.

Gomez watched the winger's thick calves and infuriatingly confident dribbling posture, then finally lost patience. He stretched out a leg, missed the ball, and kicked Grealish to the ground.

"Another foul on Grealish!"

Beglin laughed. "That is already the seventy-fourth foul he has suffered this season. He leads the Premier League by a considerable distance."

"There is something provocative about the way he dribbles," Drury replied. "He places the ball just close enough to suggest it can be won, then takes it away the instant a defender accepts the invitation."

Grealish seemed to possess a built-in taunt.

He hovered directly in front of defenders, shifted his weight from side to side, and made them feel foolish if they refused to tackle.

Attempt the challenge, and it usually became a foul.

Do nothing, and he drifted past.

The Grealish temptation was difficult to resist.

United received a free kick from the right.

Havertz delivered it toward the near post, where Ling and Van Dijk leapt together.

Ling rose higher.

His glancing header flew beyond Alisson—

Clang!

The ball struck the crossbar and bounced away.

The traveling supporters broke into a cold sweat.

Five minutes later, Ashley Young escaped down the wing and crossed toward the back post. Ling had established position ahead of Van Dijk and somehow directed a header toward goal from an almost nonexistent angle.

Alisson reacted sharply, throwing up both hands and parrying it away.

Grealish attacked the loose ball, but Gomez retreated onto the line and cleared his shot.

"Manchester United are tightening the grip!" Drury declared. "Liverpool are trying to escape their own penalty area, but every clearance seems to return with greater force."

Van Dijk wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked toward Ling.

As the match continued, Ling's rhythm was improving.

His own was collapsing.

The accumulation of matches had begun to show. Early in the evening, experience and positioning had concealed the fatigue. Now every turn, sprint, and leap required greater effort.

Klopp finally acknowledged the danger.

"Matip! Warm up. You're going on."

On the Liverpool bench, Takumi Minamino watched the match silently.

Since joining from Red Bull Salzburg during the winter window, he had imagined immediate opportunities at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Reality had been less glamorous. Most matches had been spent either on the bench or outside the squad entirely.

Watching Ling dominate the stage only emphasized how far he still had to climb.

Several minutes later, Klopp made the change.

Van Dijk left the pitch, exhausted and already carrying a yellow card. Matip entered beside Gomez, tasked with surviving the closing stages against a forward who had tormented the world's best defender all evening.

Manchester United tested the new partnership immediately.

Alex Sandro, introduced for Ashley Young, attacked Alexander-Arnold down the left and beat him before pulling the ball back toward the edge of the penalty area.

Matić arrived and drove a fierce shot through the crowd.

Gomez blocked it with his body.

The penalty area descended into chaos.

Red and white shirts crowded around the loose ball, legs swinging and stabbing from every direction.

"Robertson clears, but only as far as Herrera!"

"The volley is blocked again!"

"Matip tries to hook it away—"

A boot appeared a fraction before his.

Bang!

Ling stabbed the ball through the crowd and into the right side of the net.

Alisson never moved.

3–2.

Gary Neville's scream drowned out Carragher beside him.

"LING! LING! LING!"

Peter Drury rose into the noise pouring from Old Trafford.

"A HAT-TRICK IN THE NORTH WEST DERBY!"

"Liverpool survived the artistry, they survived the counterattack, but they could not survive the predator!"

"Inside a penalty area filled with bodies, where others saw only confusion, Jeremy Ling saw the one instant that belonged to him."

"Matip had barely entered the battle. Ling was already waiting to decide it."

Beglin studied the replay.

"That is pure anticipation. Matip is preparing the clearance, but Ling reads the movement before the defender completes it. He gets his foot there first, and from that distance, Alisson has no possibility of reacting."

"Mourinho told United to attack the moment Liverpool changed their defense. They have done exactly that."

Ling sprinted toward the corner and dropped into a long knee slide as Old Trafford exploded around him.

Without Van Dijk's voice and organization, Liverpool's defense had lost its shape in the scramble. One failed clearance had triggered another, and Ling had been the quickest to recognize the decisive moment.

Perhaps fortune had favored him slightly.

But fortune tended to favor players already waiting in the right place.

Van Dijk had barely sat down before the ball entered Liverpool's net. His shirt was still soaked, and he had not even finished wiping the sweat from his face.

He stared at the pitch in frustration.

He had been substituted only minutes earlier.

How had United already scored?

Klopp's face turned pale. For an instant, he pointed angrily toward Matip, ready to unleash everything he was feeling.

Then he remembered Mourinho's reaction to Maguire's own goal.

The United manager had remained calm, protected his player, and kept the team focused on the match.

Klopp forced himself to take a deep breath.

Shouting would not reverse the goal.

Liverpool now had no route left except forward. A draw would at least keep them level in the title race, while defeat at Old Trafford would leave Manchester United in control.

Klopp turned toward his bench and began preparing further attacking changes.

The summit was slipping away again.

Liverpool had to chase it.
