Kenpachi Azashiro's injury was caused by Gosuke Shigure.
That was the statement that fell from Kyoraku Shunsui's mouth — calm, deliberate, and heavy enough to silence the room.
"Before Kenpachi Azashiro surrendered himself," Shunsui began, "there was the incident of the disappearing souls in Rukongai. As an intelligence unit, my Eighth Division was responsible for investigating it and collecting all related information. When we discovered Kenpachi Azashiro was highly suspicious, I immediately reported it to the Head-Captain. That was when I learned from him that, before I even arrived, there had already been a massive reiatsu disturbance in the Zaraki District — one of captain-level intensity."
His gaze swept across the room of captains. "One of the reiatsu signatures belonged to Kenpachi Azashiro."
The room stirred slightly. Even before Shunsui had finished, the captains could sense where this was going.
Shunsui continued evenly, his words precise. "When the Head-Captain ordered me to investigate, I rushed to the scene in the Zaraki district. What I found was Kenpachi Azashiro lying on the barren ground — gravely injured — and standing beside him was Gosuke Shigure."
He paused, giving the words weight. "From every trace of reiatsu, from every reading collected by the Seireitei Research Institute, it was confirmed beyond doubt that the person who fought Kenpachi Azashiro that day… was Gosuke Shigure. And the reason Kenpachi Azashiro surrendered himself afterward was because he was defeated by him."
For a moment, even the experienced captains exchanged looks. The idea that a vice-captain had defeated a sitting Kenpachi was almost absurd — yet the quiet conviction in Shunsui's voice left no room for disbelief.
To solidify the claim, Hikifune Kiryu of the Twelfth Division spoke up next. "According to the readings from the Seireitei Research Institute, our monitors detected two overlapping captain-level reiatsu waves in the Zaraki District that day. The location, the energy levels — all consistent with what Kyoraku has said."
The captains murmured in confirmation. Captain Yamamoto Genryusai, who had remained silent so far, did not refute either statement — and that silence was itself acknowledgment.
The room fell quiet. The captains were processing the revelation — that the calm, often unassuming vice-captain of the Eleventh Division had struck down the man bearing the name of Kenpachi.
Shunsui took another sip from his gourd and said, "So as I was saying, when I arrived, Kenpachi Azashiro was unconscious, his injuries severe. Gosuke Shigure stood beside him — his blade drawn but unstained. Judging from the traces of spiritual damage left in the terrain, there's no doubt the two had fought fiercely. But Shigure's reiatsu readings clearly showed that he had emerged victorious."
He looked toward Yamamoto. "The conclusion is simple: Kenpachi Azashiro was defeated — and afterward, he chose to surrender himself."
Across the table, Unohana Retsu's calm expression betrayed a flicker of realization. She remembered the day Shunsui had brought both men to the Fourth Division —Kenpachi Azashiro bleeding heavily, and a young man standing behind him, silent and composed. She had asked Shunsui then who could have injured Azashiro so gravely. He hadn't answered her at the time.
Now she knew.
Gosuke Shigure.
The thought lingered in her mind. To defeat a Kenpachi — even one as unorthodox as Azashiro's — was no small feat. For a vice-captain, it was unheard of. Yet Shunsui's words, and the corroboration from the Twelfth Division, left no room for doubt.
Perhaps, she thought, that man had touched upon a strength few shinigami ever reached.
Shihouin Awayuki of the Second Division broke the silence. "If Gosuke Shigure truly defeated Kenpachi Azashiro, then according to the succession law of the Eleventh Division, he fulfills the requirement to become the next Kenpachi."
He folded his arms, nodding slightly. "The rule is simple — defeat the previous Kenpachi to inherit the title. If he has done that, and given his familiarity with the Eleventh Division's operations as vice-captain, I see no reason to reject him."
Murmurs of agreement spread through the captains. The reasoning was logical. In truth, none of them particularly wanted to get involved in the Eleventh Division's internal affairs — as long as someone strong enough to control that war-loving division existed, it was better for everyone.
Still, the matter could not be decided there. The authority to appoint a new captain rested not only with Yamamoto Genryusai but also with the Central 46, the highest judiciary body of Soul Society.
Shunsui had given a name. Now, all eyes turned toward the old man who sat in silence at the head of the room.
Yamamoto finally spoke, his gravelly voice echoing through the hall. "If what you have said, Captain Kyoraku, is accurate — if Gosuke Shigure truly defeated Kenpachi Azashiro — then he is, in principle, qualified to bear the title of Kenpachi and assume the position of Eleventh Division captain."
He paused. "However… there is a problem."
The captains straightened slightly. Yamamoto's eyes swept over them.
"The succession of the Kenpachi title follows the Eleventh Division's unique tradition." he continued. "Defeating the previous Kenpachi alone is not enough. The battle must be witnessed — by two hundred members of the Eleventh Division, as well as at least one captain-rank shinigami — to ensure the legitimacy of the succession."
He leaned forward, voice deepening. "When Kenpachi Azashiro challenged Kenpachi Kuruyashiki, the battle was witnessed by members of the Fourth and Eleventh Divisions, with Captain Kyoraku himself present as the captain-rank observer. But this time, when Gosuke Shigure fought Kenpachi Azashiro — there were no witnesses."
Shunsui inclined his head. "That's correct. By the time I arrived, the battle had already ended."
"Then there lies the issue." Yamamoto said. "Without witnesses, we cannot determine the circumstances of that duel. For all we know, deceit or ambush could have been involved."
No one doubted Shigure's integrity — but Soul Society's rules existed for a reason. A captain's title carried weight beyond mere strength; it represented legitimacy and honor before the Gotei 13 and the nobles of Seireitei.
If the duel could not be verified, the succession could not be formally recognized.
Yamamoto's eyes closed briefly in thought before reopening. "Therefore," he said, his voice solemn, "I have decided that Gosuke Shigure will undergo a captain assessment to determine whether he possesses the strength and ability to serve as captain of the Eleventh Division — and to bear the title of the Ninth Kenpachi."
