The deep sense of dread filling the small party at the arrival of the Lvl 2 Wolf caused them each to break out in a cold sweat. Thomas could not help but glance around to see if there were any safe avenues of escape. Not seeing any paths that he could take while also ensuring his subordinates safety, Thomas turned his attention back to the wolf as it tensed up its legs. His two guards braced themselves, with his guard on the left stepping in front of Thomas to shield him. "Run my Lord, this wolf may be beyond our current abilities," the guard stated; a bead of sweat dropping down the side of his face.

"We're well past that." Thomas muttered just as the wolf leapt at them, taking a swipe at the guard. Rolling to the left, the guard dodged the initial swipe but was unable to dodge the bite to his shoulder shortly after. The wolf's strength staggering as it tore through the rudimentary armor tasting the metallic flavor of blood. In response to the wolf's actions, Thomas had rotated to the right of the battlefield behind a tree. Raising a hand to in the wolf's direction he fired. Fireball!

This reduced his mana down to 60/100. Looking at his mana totals, he was certain he could finish off the wolf. The problem now was getting his guards out of harms way. He had let panic direct his movements earlier and was now paying for it. "Guards, fall back to the town. Run, now!" The second guard, hearing his Lord's orders, nodded and ran to grab his friend. The wolf, saw the movements but didn't take his eyes off Thomas knowing that he had cast the fireball.

After he heard the two guards' footsteps fade into the distance, the stalemate between the two remaining combatants ended quickly. Thomas shot a fireball toward the wolf, who narrowly dodged to the right; the fireball sailing off to hit a tree but failed to ignite.

Thomas jumped to the left to avoid a vicious bite that would have definitely taken an arm had it landed. He had no time to celebrate as when he landed, a wind blade sliced into his shoulder blade. The injured Baron turned to look at his foe and could have sworn he saw a wolf smirking at him.

Health: 25/50

Half of his health gone in a single attack. He really needed more experience in combat, he thought to himself through clenched teeth.

The wolf opened its mouth and wind could be felt swirling toward its maw. Seeing his chances dwindling, Thomas fired a fireball with his left hand toward the wolf. Fireball! The fireball landed at the epicenter of the wolf's spell, causing the air to fuel the fire further into the wolf's mouth.

***Critical Damage: x2

Thomas sat back against a tree, the smoke obscuring his vision of his dangerous foe. Blood could be felt leaking into his shirt. His eyes drifted to the system notifications.

....Wait....the math isn't mathing.  A wind blade cut through the smoke, narrowly missing Thomas' head and cutting a deep groove into the tree. Rolling to his feet, Thomas really wished the wolf would just die. The wind blade had scattered the cloud of smoke showing a blackened wolf with blood dripping from its mouth. A deep growl rumbling in its chest promising retribution on the injury caused to it.

Thomas gathered his mana in his hand, prepared for the most dangerous game of chicken in his life. The wolf rushed at him and he did the same toward it. Jumping to the right, he dodged a quickly formed wind blade. CHOMP

The wolf bit down on his shoulder, victory gleaming in its eyes. Soft hands pressed against its chest and a whisper reached his ears. fireball.

Limping out of the forest, Thomas was surprised to see a group of 10 soldiers led by a gruff looking veteran with an old scar visible along the right cheek just below his eye. An eye that was locked on the injured noble in front of him.

"YOU IDIOT!" The gruff soldier yelled at Thomas. "You just got here and suddenly you're already on death's door. Who the hell told you to go into this forest with 2 guards? If you had bothered to ask anyone, a team of 5 is needed at all times. But nooooo, Mr. Noble knows everything. If I hear you go into the forest without clearing it with me first, we're going to have a problem. Understand?! You lot, get him back to the manor."

Thomas let the words wash over him. He had been overconfident in having a system, he didn't think to ask the guards for their opinion let alone their names. He needed to stop thinking as someone from the a 21st Century Earth and start thinking as someone in the midst of a magic filled continent.

A pair of arms aided his ambling toward the mansion while a voice added quietly, "Please forgive the captain. He was your mother's chief of security and was almost throw in prison for trying to defy her orders. He views you as his second chance, to protect what she valued most. He's really nice once you get to know him."

"It's alright, he's not wrong. I was and am an idiot." Thomas replied. After what felt like an agonizing eternity of time, they finally arrived at the manor with several attendants rushing to get Thomas to his room. Bandages and salves being applied to his injuries once he was laid down in his bed. He had just gotten comfortable in his bed lying face down, his pain reduced to a throbbing pain on his back, when he heard the door to his bedroom open.

"I was gone for one week and you've moved and gotten grievously injured. Seriously, how can you be less dependable as my husband."

Someone is digging a latrine for letting her in here while I'm like this.

"Seraphina, now's not a good time. Let's reschedule for a year from now." Thomas replied, not bothering to open his eyes.

"Leave my husband to his own poor decisions? Not a chance. Besides, I told my uncle that I would live with you for the foreseeable future. You had mentioned the last time that you wished for us to be able to talk more and this way we can. Plus, I know what that rat did and I am not pleased." Seraphina at least was consistent, it was her rules and there was no alternative.

"Relax, Seraphina. I don't regret what I did to Draven."

"Draven? No I meant, Duke Geoffrey. In my family, we will support our children no matter what. So get on board with that when we have ours."

Is it even worth arguing with her at this point? These were the final thoughts running through his mind as he drifted off to sleep aided by the medicine provided to him earlier.

Seraphina, hearing his breathing evening, smiled softly from the doorway and retreated to the hallway. Speaking to the village head who had directed her to his room she said, "Bring me the documents showing the state of the village. I want to know what my husband is getting into so that I can apply pressure where needed to help him."

"At once, Your Highness." The village chief scurried off to get the files she requested like death itself was after him.
