The Headmistress's tower stood at the highest point of the academy — an obsidian spire that pierced the clouds. Few students ever entered it willingly. Those who did often left changed.
Ira and Elara climbed the spiral staircase in silence, their footsteps echoing off the cold stone. The air felt thicker here, humming faintly with restrained power.
Elara glanced at him as they reached the final landing. "You've been here before, haven't you?"
He nodded once. "Twice. The first time… wasn't pleasant."
Before she could ask more, the great door opened on its own with a low, rumbling groan.
The chamber inside was vast — walls lined with ancient tomes, glowing crystals, and portraits of past Headmasters. At its center, behind a curved desk of polished blackstone, sat Headmistress Lyra Veyne.
Her silver hair shimmered like starlight, and her violet eyes saw far more than they should.
"Ira. Elara." Her voice was calm but carried an undertone of command that made the air vibrate. "Please, sit."
They obeyed.
Lyra folded her hands atop the desk, studying them both. "I've been monitoring your bond since the arena incident. What happened in the training chamber confirms my concerns."
Elara tensed. "Concerns?"
Lyra's gaze sharpened. "The energy you both released wasn't ordinary mana. It carried resonance from the rift itself."
Ira frowned. "You're saying our bond is… connected to the rift?"
"Yes — but not in the way you think." She rose from her seat, walking toward a massive crystal suspended in midair at the back of the room. Inside it, dark threads of energy pulsed like veins.
"This is a fragment of the rift core," Lyra said. "It reacts to certain frequencies — particularly those tied to lost or corrupted souls."
Elara's eyes widened. "Souls?"
Lyra nodded slowly. "When your bond activated, this fragment responded. It means one of you carries a mark that isn't entirely your own."
The words hung in the air like ice.
Elara turned toward Ira. "What does she mean?"
Ira didn't answer. His hands clenched tightly against his knees.
Lyra watched him closely. "Ira, the incident three years ago — the one involving your first bond. Do you remember what truly happened?"
His breathing quickened. "I remember enough."
"Tell her," Lyra urged softly.
Ira stared at the floor. "My first bond was with a girl named Lyss. We were paired for combat resonance testing. But something went wrong. The mana we summoned… it pulled her into the rift. I tried to save her, but—" His voice broke. "She didn't come back."
Elara's expression softened. "Ira…"
Lyra's voice remained calm. "The rift doesn't take life. It transforms it. I believe Lyss's soul may have fused with your mark. That's why your bond reacts abnormally — why the energy feels… alive."
The room went silent.
Elara whispered, "You mean… part of her is still inside him?"
Lyra nodded gravely. "Yes. And that makes your connection dangerous — but also vital. If you can harness it, you might be able to stabilize the rift's energy. If not… it could consume you both."
The words struck hard, but Ira lifted his gaze, resolve flashing in his eyes. "Then we'll master it. Whatever it takes."
Lyra studied him for a long moment, then smiled faintly. "Good. Because you'll need that determination. I'm sending you both on a mission beyond the academy walls. A scouting assignment to the ruins of Valenreach. That's where the first rift opened — and where answers may lie."
Elara straightened. "When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow at dawn," Lyra said. "Rest while you can. The path ahead will test not only your strength… but your hearts."

Outside the tower, the wind howled. The two walked down the long bridge connecting the spire to the main campus, the night falling around them.
Elara finally broke the silence. "Lyss… you never told me about her."
"I didn't think it mattered anymore."
"But it does," she said softly. "If she's still part of you… then she's part of us, too."
He looked at her then — really looked — and for a moment, his eyes softened.
"Maybe," he said. "Just promise me, if things go wrong out there—"
She cut him off. "Then we'll face it together. That's the deal, remember?"
He gave a quiet nod. The faintest spark of warmth flickered between them — fragile but real.
Above them, lightning flashed once across the sky, illuminating the academy spires. Somewhere in the distance, the sound of the rift's pulse echoed again — faint, rhythmic, like a heartbeat waiting to awaken.
