Chapter 17 - First Mystical Encounter

The portal world stretched before Kang Jinhyuk like a living map of chaos...jagged cliffs rising like serrated teeth, mist curling over stone like restless spirits, and an ever-present hum of energy that pressed on the mind and senses. Today, he led his small squad deeper into the labyrinthine valley, guided by Jeok-Ma's cryptic instructions: Retrieve the artifact. Survive its guardian. Learn its lesson. Or die trying.

Jinhyuk's fingers brushed the hilt of his blade as he scanned the terrain. Every shadow could conceal a threat, every gust of wind could betray movement. Yet, he moved with calm precision, the energy of Second Rate cultivation coiling within him like a restrained storm.

Keep alert, he instructed his team, eyes narrowing. The artifact is nearby. Stay sharp. We are not alone.

Sae-Ryeo, as always, fell into formation at his side, daggers gleaming faintly. Her presence was a mixture of challenge and reassurance...she tested him constantly, but in these moments, he appreciated the balance she brought.

You know, she teased, it's rare to see a bandit so… composed. Either you've grown, or the portal is warping reality in your favor.

Composed is necessary, Jinhyuk replied, scanning a narrow gorge ahead. Chaos comes for those who underestimate it.

The artifact's location was marked by a faint, pulsing light at the far end of the gorge, barely visible through the dense mist. As they approached, a low, guttural growl echoed through the canyon, vibrating against the stone walls. The squad froze.

Did you hear that? one of the younger recruits whispered, eyes wide.

Don't move unless I signal, Jinhyuk ordered, voice firm. Assess before acting. There's more than just what we see.

From the mist emerged the guardian...a creature of sinew and shadow, its body rippling like molten stone, eyes glowing an ethereal green. It moved with a predatory grace, limbs bending in ways that should have been impossible. Energy radiated from it in waves, subtly distorting perception and threatening to overwhelm the senses.

Sae-Ryeo's lips curved into a smirk. Ah, so this is the welcoming committee. Cute… if you're into being eaten.

Jinhyuk didn't respond verbally. He instinctively assessed the creature's movements, patterns, and aura. A minor mystical creature, he thought, voice echoing only in his mind. But not weak. The energy is volatile... anticipation is key. Reflexes, precision, strategy… all will matter.

The first strike came without warning. The creature lunged with terrifying speed, claws slicing through the air toward Sae-Ryeo. Jinhyuk's energy flared, moving him in a blur as he intercepted, his blade a ribbon of silver light. The clash sent a shockwave through the canyon, stirring the mist into violent spirals.

Move! Coordinate! he barked, signaling the squad to encircle the creature.

Sae-Ryeo spun backward, daggers flashing, forcing the guardian to shift its attention. You're quick, bandit, she called. But not fast enough to read my mind!

Jinhyuk's mind raced. Every movement had to count, not just for him, but for the survival of his team. The creature's energy pulses distorted perception, but he drew upon Second Rate mastery, letting intuition and calculated prediction guide him. It anticipates reflexes, but not strategy, he realized. I will make it fight on my terms.

He feinted to the left, baiting the creature into a strike that would overextend its momentum. As predicted, it lunged, claws slicing past air where he had been. With a controlled surge, he pivoted and struck its side with precise energy-laced force. The creature growled, recoiling, but its eyes burned brighter, sensing the threat.

The battle became a deadly rhythm, a test of mind and body. The guardian's attacks were relentless, each strike a mixture of raw power and mystical cunning. Jinhyuk adapted constantly, blending swordplay, energy manipulation, and tactical positioning.

Predict, adapt, exploit, he reminded himself, internal monologue sharp and disciplined. Strength alone won't win this fight. Observation, strategy, patience—my greatest weapons are my mind and my team.

Sae-Ryeo darted in, blades striking in perfect harmony with his moves, drawing the creature's attention, exposing openings. Jinhyuk noticed subtle tremors in its stance, fluctuations in energy that revealed vulnerability.

Now, he whispered under his breath. Energy surged in his blade, coiling like a serpent ready to strike.

With precise timing, he launched himself at the guardian, energy flaring, strikes calculated to exploit every opening Sae-Ryeo had created. The creature roared, staggering under the combined assault. A final, well-placed thrust of his energy-infused blade pierced its core, unraveling its mystical form into a cloud of green mist.

Silence fell, broken only by the squad's heavy breathing. The artifact, now exposed, glowed brighter than ever, a crystalline orb that pulsed with latent power, waiting to bond with its new master.

Jinhyuk approached cautiously, eyes never leaving the shimmering artifact. As he touched it, a surge of energy coursed through him, reinforcing his Second Rate mastery and offering glimpses of the lessons yet to come in First Rate cultivation. His body hummed with power, his mind clear, yet burdened with the weight of what he had just faced.

Strength is only one facet, he thought, recalling Jeok-Ma's voice. Strategy, patience, collaboration… these are equally crucial. And yet, the world will demand more. This creature was minor. Greater forces await.

Sae-Ryeo stepped beside him, leaning casually. You handled that well. For someone called a bandit, you might actually be more than a thorn in the Murim world's side.

Experience, observation, and practice, Jinhyuk replied, still absorbing the artifact's energy. The Murim world is unforgiving. Power without understanding… without foresight… is death.

And teamwork, she added, eyes glinting. Don't forget that. You can't win every battle alone.

Jinhyuk exhaled, the weight of her words settling deep within him. Trust and leadership, he realized, were as crucial as strength and speed. His team's survival depended on his ability to balance them all—morality, vengeance, strategy, and ruthlessness.

I will remember, he whispered, gaze distant. Every lesson, every ally, every battle. I will grow stronger, and I will never falter again.

The squad gathered the artifact, the glow fading into a faint pulse within Jinhyuk's grasp. They made camp nearby, the valley quiet now except for the hum of latent portal energy. Jinhyuk remained vigilant, seated apart, reflecting.

A mystical creature, yes, but a mirror, he thought. A mirror of the battles to come. Power, instinct, strategy, loyalty… all tested at once. And yet, even victory carries a cost. Complacency is death. Misjudgment is death. Hesitation… death.

Sae-Ryeo approached silently, placing a hand lightly on his shoulder. You've changed, Jinhyuk. Not just stronger—but sharper. Smarter. You're learning… fast.

I have no choice, he replied softly, eyes narrowing toward the distant horizon. Every step, every battle… it leads to vengeance. But I will not be blind. I will lead. I will survive. And I will rise beyond those who thought me nothing.

The artifact pulsed faintly in his hand, a promise of power and danger intertwined. The valley's mist swirled around them, hinting at more trials, more mystical guardians, more tests of mind, body, and will. Jinhyuk's path through the portal world had only begun, and the lessons of this encounter the first of many would echo in every battle, every strategy, and every alliance he forged in the dark, twisted Murim world to come.
