Chapter 54 - Chapter 49

The next morning, the Academy grounds hummed with life. Students moved between classes and training halls, their energies mingling in a subtle current only perceptible to those attuned. Renata walked among them, Bai Lang padding silently at her side. To the others, he appeared as a stray white wolf, but to her, he was both guardian and extension of her senses, silently observing the world with golden eyes that flickered beneath her veil.

"Renata! Over here!" Elizabeth waved from the courtyard, a bright smile on her face. Wang Hao trailed behind her, hands tucked into his sleeves, his gaze thoughtful. Lin Fei and Fei Yi lingered near the edge of the group, still measuring her carefully, curiosity and rivalry mixed with tentative respect.

Renata approached, bowing slightly. "Good morning." Her voice was calm, but her mind was already scanning the energy currents of the students nearby. Each pulse, each subtle fluctuation, told her more than anyone could know.

"Ready for today's mission?" Elizabeth asked, leaning closer. "I hear it's a real test—outside the training halls this time."

"Yes," Renata replied. "And not just for combat. Observation, strategy, and adaptability matter just as much as skill." She didn't mention that her own hidden layers—the Divine Body, Yin techniques, and system-guided instincts—gave her an advantage others could only dream of.

The instructor's voice called from the balcony above. "All students assigned to the Field Initiative Team, assemble!"

The Field Initiative Team was a selective group for students showing promise beyond raw cultivation—those who could apply intelligence and strategy alongside skill. Rumors had already spread: three-vein students rarely made the cut. Yet Renata had been chosen, though the criteria remained a mystery to most.

As the team gathered, a projection board displayed the mission briefing: a remote forested region near the Academy was in turmoil. Strange energy fluctuations had been detected, and students were tasked with a reconnaissance and stabilization mission. The exercise tested teamwork, adaptability, and subtle energy manipulation—skills the instructors believed some students could possess naturally.

Renata glanced at Bai Lang, who tilted his head in quiet acknowledgment. Even a three-vein student could navigate the unknown—if she relied on observation, patience, and the instincts of her companion.

The team set out, moving through dense foliage that seemed almost alive with energy. The instructor had warned them: the forest was filled with illusionary traps, natural hazards, and energy anomalies. Only careful analysis and coordination would ensure success.

Elizabeth whispered, "I'm glad you're with us, Renata. You always seem to notice things others don't."

Renata nodded, hiding her smile. "Observation matters more than strength sometimes. You'll see."

Bai Lang padded silently ahead, sniffing the air, alerting her to subtle disturbances. She followed carefully, mimicking his movements and noting the shifts in energy around them. A fallen log glowed faintly with a hidden seal—a minor energy trap. Renata halted, signaling the others to stop.

"Wait," she murmured. Using a subtle pulse of her energy, she traced the flow of the trap, deciphering its pattern. Carefully, she stepped around the trigger, motioning for the others to follow.

Elizabeth's eyes widened. "How did you see that?"

Renata shrugged lightly. "A combination of focus and careful attention." She didn't explain the layers of training she had undergone in the VR world or the subtle influence of the system guiding her decisions.

Deeper in the forest, the group encountered a pack of minor spirit beasts. Most students drew their weapons instinctively, prepared to fight, but Renata raised a hand.

"Observe first. Fight only if necessary."

She studied their movements—the pack's leader was injured, smaller and weaker than the others. Recognizing the chance for subtle intervention, she nudged Bai Lang forward. The white wolf darted ahead, circling the leader, her energy guiding his movements in a protective pattern.

The spirit beasts backed away, recognizing Bai Lang's presence as a threat and a stabilizing force, rather than engaging in combat. The students didn't understand why the encounter had been resolved so efficiently, but Renata's strategy had kept them safe without a single clash.

Lin Fei muttered, half in admiration, "She's clever… too clever for her apparent level."

After navigating the forest and neutralizing energy anomalies, the group reached the final checkpoint: a collapsed bridge over a fast-moving river. Several minor energy barriers prevented passage, a test for both agility and understanding of energy flow.

Renata approached, assessing the situation. Her golden eyes flashed briefly as she analyzed the currents. Bai Lang stepped forward, sniffing the ground, and she mirrored his movements, identifying subtle gaps in the barrier's energy patterns.

"Follow my lead," she said quietly, guiding the team across the bridge. Each step was deliberate, each movement calculated. One misstep could trigger the barrier, but thanks to careful observation and the silent guidance of Bai Lang, the team crossed safely.

At the far side, the instructors' energy pulses acknowledged completion. "Well done," a voice called. "Strategic thinking, observation, and leadership were all demonstrated. Pay attention: such skills will determine your advancement as much as raw cultivation strength."

Later, as the students rested in the Academy courtyard, Elizabeth leaned close to Renata. "You didn't just pass—you led us through that entire trial. And… I don't think anyone realized how much help Bai Lang gave you."

Renata smirked faintly, stroking the wolf's fur. "He's my companion. We work together."

Wang Hao nodded, studying her carefully. "You're unusual. Most three-vein students would have struggled, yet you handled traps, spirit beasts, and barriers as if you had far greater cultivation. It's impressive… and concerning."

Lin Fei crossed her arms, pretending to scowl. "Don't think this means you're invincible. Next time, we'll see how you handle combat under pressure."

Renata laughed softly. "I look forward to it."l

As night fell, she retreated to her quarters, Bai Lang curling quietly at her feet. She circulated her energy subtly, reviewing each moment of the mission. Every decision, every observation, every interaction with her team and the environment—she cataloged them for future refinement.

"I grow, even when others cannot see it," she whispered. "And soon… the Academy itself will have to recognize my potential."

Outside her window, faint energy pulses shimmered in the darkness. Killian and Julie's presence lingered like a shadow, testing her subtly. Yet she felt no fear. Her path was clear: growth, strategy, and careful cultivation of her hidden power.

Bai Lang nudged her hand softly, a silent reminder that some allies, like strength itself, were best revealed in subtle ways, rather than openly.

And in the shadows of the Academy, the first seeds of friendship, rivalry, and destiny were quietly taking root.
