Chapter 130 - The Chosen and the Broken (part 2)

Pov Author

The silence did not last.

It cracked.

Softly at first...

A shift in the air.

A change so subtle it might have gone unnoticed by anyone else.

But not Anna.

The Wind Whisperer pulsed once in her hands.

Warm.

Then cold.

Then...

Alive.

Her breath hitched.

Kazan didn't move.

But his eyes sharpened.

"You feel it," he said quietly.

It wasn't a question.

Anna swallowed, her grip tightening. "It's reacting."

"To you," he corrected.

The weapon hummed again—low, almost like a whisper curling through the room. The lantern flame flickered violently, shadows bending unnaturally along the walls.

Anna took a slow step back.

"I don't like this."

Kazan stepped forward.

"I do."

Her back nearly brushed the wall.

"Stay where you are," she snapped.

He didn't stop.

Of course he didn't.

"You're afraid of something you don't understand," he said, voice low, steady too steady.

"I'm afraid of you," Anna shot back.

That

Made him pause.

Just for a second.

And in that second, something changed.

Not anger.

Not offense.

Something darker.

Quieter.

"…Good," he said again, softer this time.

The Wind Whisperer flared.

A sudden rush of air burst outward sharp and wild pushing against Kazan's robes, sending the lantern flame dancing violently.

Anna gasped.

"I didn't—"

"I know," he interrupted, watching her closely. "You don't control it."

The wind stilled.

But the tension didn't.

It coiled tighter.

"You're unstable," Kazan said, almost thoughtfully.

Anna frowned. "That's not exactly comforting."

"It's not meant to be."

Silence pressed in again.

Then—

A knock.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Kazan didn't look away from her. "Enter."

The door opened.

Renji stepped in without waiting.

His eyes immediately went to Anna.

Then to Kazan.

Then back to Anna.

"You took too long," he said flatly.

Anna let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "I'm fine."

He didn't look convinced.

His gaze flicked briefly to the Wind Whisperer—still faintly glowing—then back to Kazan.

"What did you do?" Renji asked.

Kazan's expression didn't change. "Nothing."

"That's somehow worse."

A faint twitch of amusement touched Kazan's lips.

Anna stepped forward slightly. "It reacted on its own."

Renji's brows pulled together. "To what?"

A pause.

Then—

"To me," Anna admitted.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Renji exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair. "Of course it did."

Kazan turned away from them both, walking toward the far side of the room.

"This confirms it," he said.

Anna stiffened. "Confirms what?"

He stopped.

Didn't turn.

"That your presence here is not an accident."

Renji crossed his arms. "Yeah, we figured that part out already."

Kazan ignored him.

"The artifact is responding beyond standard resonance," he continued. "Which means one thing."

Anna's pulse quickened.

"…Say it."

Now he turned.

His gaze locked onto hers.

"You are tied to something older than this world's current order."

The words settled heavily.

Anna shook her head. "That doesn't make any sense."

"It doesn't need to," Kazan said calmly. "It only needs to be true."

Renji let out a quiet scoff. "You're jumping to conclusions."

"No," Kazan replied. "I'm observing patterns."

"And what pattern says she's some ancient mystery?" Renji shot back.

Kazan's eyes flicked briefly to the Wind Whisperer.

Then back to Anna.

"The kind that doesn't repeat."

Silence.

Then—

Another pulse from the weapon.

Stronger.

This time, the air itself seemed to tighten.

Anna flinched. Anna didn't knew how to tell them, it was not the wind whisperer but the broken stone stuck in her heart.

"I can't keep holding this."

"Don't drop it," Kazan said immediately.

"I wasn't planning to!"

Renji stepped closer. "Give it to me."

The moment he reached—

The Wind Whisperer surged.

A sharp gust snapped outward, forcing him back a step.

"Okay—" he muttered. "It definitely doesn't like me."

Anna stared at it. "It won't let go."

Kazan watched carefully.

"Interesting."

"Stop saying that!" Anna snapped. "This is not interesting!"

To him—

It clearly was.

Then—

Footsteps.

Fast.

Urgent.

The door burst open again.

A guard stumbled in, breath uneven. "My Lord—!"

Kazan's expression hardened instantly. "Speak."

"There's been an incident—"

A pause.

The guard hesitated.

"Prince Shang's palace."

The room stilled.

Renji's eyes narrowed. "What kind of incident?"

The guard swallowed. "Screams were heard… then silence. No one has responded since."

Anna's stomach dropped.

Kazan didn't react outwardly.

But the air around him...

Shifted.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"…Prepare the carriage," he said.

The guard bowed quickly and left.

Silence lingered for only a second.

Then Kazan looked at Anna.

"You're coming."

Renji immediately stepped forward. "She's not going anywhere near that."

Kazan didn't even look at him this time.

"She is."

Anna hesitated.

Everything in her still screamed to run.

To stay away.

From him.

From all of this.

But something else...

Something deeper...

Pulled at her.

The Wind Whisperer pulsed again.

Almost like an answer.

Anna closed her eyes briefly.

Then opened them.

"…I'm going."

Renji stared at her. "Anna—"

"I need to understand what's happening," she said quietly.

His jaw tightened.

Then he sighed.

"…Fine. But I'm not leaving your side."

Kazan turned toward the door.

"Then don't fall behind."

And just like that

They moved.

Out of the room.

Into something far worse.

Far more dangerous.

And this time...

There would be no turning back.

To be continued…
