As I stood in line with my fellow graduates, the weight of my cap and gown felt both surreal and significant. It was a moment I had long dreamed of – my community college graduation ceremony. Years of hard work, determination, and late-night study sessions had led me to this point. The excitement and nerves buzzed inside me like a swarm of butterflies, making it hard to contain my smile.
The commencement ceremony was held in the college's spacious auditorium, adorned with colorful banners and flowers. Family and friends filled the seats, their cheers and applause creating an atmosphere of celebration and pride. It was overwhelming to see so many familiar faces among the audience, knowing they were here to support me on this momentous day.
As the procession began, the sound of "Pomp and Circumstance" filled the air, and I took a deep breath, trying to soak in every second of this experience. Walking side by side with my classmates, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that brought us all together. We came from diverse backgrounds, each with unique stories and aspirations, but here we were, united by our pursuit of education and a brighter future.
As the ceremony progressed, speeches were delivered by college faculty and distinguished guests, each imparting words of wisdom and encouragement. The speakers emphasized the power of education, resilience, and the endless possibilities that awaited us beyond the confines of this college. Their words resonated deeply, reaffirming my belief in the trans-formative power of learning.
I hadn't been prepared for Chase to walk towards the lectern, I should have checked the schedule for the day, but in my haste of getting there with Dad, I hadn't had the time before now.
"Class of 2020, well done on reaching this milestone in, I'm sure, a long life of successes."
Happy faces around me smiled and nudged each other, I could hear two women beside me cooing over Chase, he had a sex appeal on another level to normal guys my age, an old head on a young body, only I knew too well the affect he can have on a red-blooded woman.
"Ladies and gentlemen, today, I stand before you to talk about an essential ingredient for success in the world of business: the unwavering spirit of never giving up. Business ventures are often filled with challenges, uncertainties, and obstacles that can leave even the most determined entrepreneur feeling discouraged. However, it is during these very Moments of adversity that the true strength of a leader is tested.
The journey of entrepreneurship is like a roller coaster ride, with exhilarating highs and daunting lows. Many great business tycoons and innovators have faced numerous setbacks and failures before achieving their remarkable success. They never allowed themselves to be defined by their failures; instead, they saw them as steppingstones on the path to greatness." Chase took a Moment and sipped from a glass of water before continuing.
"Despite facing an abundance of rejections and financial woes, Walt Disney refused to give up on his project. Eventually, he was able to convince investors to back him and make the dream of Disneyland a reality. Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Inc., was famously fired from his own company but refused to give up on his passion for innovation. These icons are just two examples of how perseverance and determination led to revolutionary achievements. In business, challenges are inevitable, but our response to them is what truly matters. We must embrace failure as a teacher, learn from our mistakes, and adapt our strategies to overcome the hurdles. Giving up should never be an option. Every obstacle provides an opportunity for grow, improve. Along the path of entrepreneurship, we will face naysayers, critics, and those who doubt our vision. It is during these times that we must silence the noise and believe in ourselves and our abilities. The ability to maintain a steadfast focus on our goals, even when the odds seem insurmountable, is what sets successful entrepreneurs apart from the rest. As business leaders, it is vital to build a resilient mindset within our teams as well. Encourage them to take risks, experiment, and learn from their experiences, no matter the outcomes. Foster an environment that values perseverance and acknowledges that failure is not a destination but merely a part of the journey towards success. In times of adversity, it is easy to succumb to fear and doubt. However, let us remember that many of the world's most successful companies were born during economic downturns and challenging times. Innovation and opportunity can arise even in the darkest of Moments." Chase's eyes pierced into mine. I felt uneasy, like he was directing those words only to me, I shuffled in my seat, unable to keep still as he continued to talk.
"Let us accept the unknown as a chance to reconsider our options, adjust our approach, and investigate fresh opportunities. As we never give up, we must also never lose sight of our core values and the purpose that drives us forward. Success in business should not be solely measured by financial gains but also by the positive impact we have on the lives of others and the world around us.
In conclusion, graduates, the path of an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart, but those who persevere, who stand tall in the face of adversity, and who never give up on their dreams are the ones who shape the future and leave a lasting legacy. Let us commit ourselves to the pursuit of greatness, knowing that every step forward, no matter how small, takes us closer to our ultimate vision. Thank you."
The audience erupted in applause, the dean of the college, Mr. Edwards, enthusiastically clapped as he approached Chase and took Chase's hand in both of his and shook it very vigorously. The whole of the room gave Chase a standing ovation, he just took his seat after being accosted by Mr. Edwards.

Finally, the moment arrived when each graduate was called to the stage to receive their diploma. My heart raced as I stepped forward, the clapping and cheers of my loved ones echoing in my ears. Receiving the diploma in my hand, I felt a swell of pride in my chest, knowing that this piece of paper represented not just a degree but a symbol of hard work and determination.
The students were celebrated with applause after the last name was called. Caps flew in the air in joyous recognition of the end of their academic journey. Among the sea of flying caps, I threw mine up too, and for a Moment, time seemed to stand still as I watched it soar.
I felt his eyes on me as the crowd went wild with cheers and celebrations around me.
After the ceremony, we reunited with our families and friends, hugging, and laughing, celebrating this milestone together.
Dad had a shine to his eyes, as he was the first to grab me in a giant bear hug. I had to support him as both his crutches fell to the floor on either side of him.
"I'm so proud of you darling, I knew you would touch the stars," a lone tear fell from my eye as I smiled at him.
"Thanks Dad, I hope I've done mum proud too" I buried me head in his shoulder, and he held me tighter.
"I'm sure she's looking down on you with love, she'll always be watching you sweetie" a choked back a small sob, my heart aching for the mother I never had to chance to meet and to share in this special day.
The throng of bodies began to subside as people made their way to vehicles, ready to let the parties begin. I couldn't help myself as I searched for Chase. I helped Dad to his chair and then my head slowly turned as I watched people walk away, I had to stand on my tiptoes to look over or around others, in the hopes I would catch a glimpse of him.
When I did finally see him, he was standing at the opposite end of the stage, partially hidden by some seating and a speaker. He looked animated as he appeared to be talking to someone, but the banners on the stage obscured them. Chase gestured in my direction as things looked to be heating up in their conversation. We locked eyes and my cheeks flushed in acknowledgement at his presence. The palms of my hands began to sweat as thoughts of the almost kiss smothered my mind. When I was able to snap out of my daydream I looked back over to where Chase was, and he was now walking towards where I was with Dad, Jaiden, Trish, and Jackie.
"Congratulations Elena, such a great achievement. Have you thought any more about a start date at Crawford Industries? we can't let such talent escape" he raised an eyebrow and the corner of his lips, the effect was instant, heat blossomed in my core, pebbling my nipples, thankfully hidden by my graduation robes. Jaiden beside me started fanning himself in such an exaggerated manner Trish burst out laughing. Poor Dad kept looking at everyone with a confused look on his face.
"Get me some water to put out my fire girl!" Jackie rolled her eyes and dragged Jaiden away with the help of Trish, towards the drink station set up at the side of the end row of chairs.
"Hello again young man, that was a fine address you gave earlier, very inspiring indeed. Even I feel the need to call Jeff and begin working at once." He chuckled to himself then made his excuses and slowly but determined, made his way over to help Trish and Jackie.
"After the way you left me, I don't think I should accept the position anymore, Chase, you humiliated me, then didn't call or talk to me until now!" I lifted my chin, so I was looking directly into his eyes, he looked like he was going to apologize, the look of sadness causing a frown across his eyebrows. He opened his mouth to speak but sighed instead. He looked worn out, I hadn't noticed before, I was too wrapped up in my feelings not to notice that Chase looked groomed but tired.
"Things were out of my control, and I like being in control Elena, in all things." I needed the job as Dad's medical bills were not Crawford Industries' problem, they were mine and I was too stubborn to let them think I couldn't pay them, or that I needed help.
"I shall contact HR in the morning and schedule my start date, but be aware Chase, this has nothing to do with you or us." I gestured between us, and Chase stepped forward towards me with a predatory look on his face. I took a step back and lifted my hands in a motion for him to stop. He fortunately did, dropping his gaze to the floor, a look of submission etched into his jaw. The silence between us ended as his phone rang from his pocket, Chase reached into his jacket and answered it, and when he looked up, I was gone.
I rejoined Dad with my friends; they were laughing at Jaiden as he was throwing popcorn up in the air and attempting to catch it with his mouth, but he missed ten in a row. Undeterred, he continued, and this had all of us howling with laughter. Chase walked towards the campus car park, and I could see from where I was standing, that Turner was waiting at the sleek Bentley door, poised to open as Chase got closer. I watched as he got in and they drove away, out of sight around the side of the large campus building we were standing beside. I gently placed a kiss on Dad's cheek.
"Dad, I'll be back in a few minutes. I need a Moment," he smiled at me and nodded.
I found myself taking a solitary Moment to sit on a bench near the campus pond, reflecting on the magnitude of the day's events. The emotions were overwhelming–happiness, relief, and a touch of melancholy as we said our goodbyes to friends who were continuing their journey elsewhere. My community college graduation had been an unforgettable experience, one that marked the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new, uncertain yet exciting future.
As I looked out over the campus that had been my second home at night for so long, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. The friendships, the knowledge gained, and the growth I experienced were immeasurable gifts that I would carry with me for the rest of my life. With newfound determination and confidence, I was ready to face whatever lay ahead, knowing that the lessons learned here would guide me on my journey wherever it might lead. How it would help me survive Chase. Only time will tell.
