"Nothing," I said smoothly, resting my chin back on my palm.
"You've been staring at me for five minutes."
"Have I?" I blinked, letting a harmless little chuckle slip out. "I didn't notice."
Nick narrowed his eyes, clearly not buying a single word. He tossed the towel onto the counter and folded his arms, slipping right back into his stern, unimpressed posture.
"When are you planning to leave? I have to get ready for work."
"Right, right," I drawled, leaning back on the stool and lacing my fingers together. "The brilliant surgeon has lives to save. I forgot."
"Cyan."
"Do you want me to leave?" I asked, tilting my head, letting my voice drop into that sweet, poisonous register. "Just say the word, Nicky. Tell me to get out."
He stiffened. He stood there for a beat, his jaw setting tight, refusing to give me the satisfaction of a real answer.
"You're free to do whatever you want. Just don't burn the place down while I'm in the shower."
