chapter 9 Sick
Maddie's P.O.V.
I wanted to spend the weekend on advance readings, but then Chloe and Brooke begged me to watch a movie with them. After watching To All the Boys I Have Loved Before P.s. I Still Love You, we went to McDonalds for dinner. They wanted me to go with them to someone's party, but I declined. Parties are not really my thing, and I don't drink. I prefer sitting at home reading a book or studying. They dropped me off at my house before heading to the party.
"Maddie, please come with us. Just stay for a couple of hours. Pretty please." Chloe said with her puppy eyes. If I don't know her, I would have fallen for her cute puppy face just like Tyler always does.
"Chlo, we all know that all I will do is sit at one corner while reading a book. So let us just skip all the embarrassment and all the 'Boo's' and 'You're a party pooper and just stay home." I explained.
"You don't have to sit at one corner Madd. Chloe and I will be there. We are going to be by your side the whole time." Brooke explained.
"Girls, we have been through these kinds of talks. We all know how this is going to end because most of the time it always ends the same." I said with a small laugh. "Besides, a deal is a deal, remember?"
Even though Chloe and Brooke are my best friends, they don't force me to do anything I don't like. Technically, I don't hate parties. I just don't feel comfortable in one. I enjoyed the parties I have been to with them, but that does not mean that I also go to one even with them. To not make them sad and upset, I made a deal with them. I will only go to a party if it is Chloe who is throwing the party and not staying past 10 pm.
"Fine. But next week you have to come with us." Chloe said.
"That is a promise. Now you take care and don't drink too much. Stay safe! Love yah." I said bidding them goodbye.
They waved goodbye and drove off. I went straight to my room to change into something more comfortable. I grabbed one of the autobiography books that I was reading and laid down on my bed. I read for about 2 hours before falling asleep. I woke up the next day with the smell of pancakes and bacon. I got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. After doing my morning ritual, I went straight to the kitchen.
"Good morning!" I said cheerfully.
"Morning, sweetheart. How was the movie yesterday?" Mom asked.
"It was fun. How was work?" I replied. "It was good, nothing unusual." Dad replied.
We talked more about school and work over breakfast. After breakfast, I asked Dad to give me some advanced lessons for Chemistry. Dad taught me for 3 hours. It was fun. After lunch, I finished my assignment and did some more advanced studying. During dinner, Dad suggested we watch Netflix together as a family bonding. One thing I love about my parents is that they always find time to bond with me and not make me feel neglected because of their work. Having parents that are a surgeon and nurse, they come home late most of the time. Sometimes they even take double shifts.
For dinner, Mom ordered pizza, and we ate it while watching The Old Guard. After the movie, I went straight to bed.
I woke up the next day with a headache. Mom gave me some Tylenol, and I drank it after having some breakfast. I got ready for school and waited for Chloe and Brooke by the porch. They arrived 15 minutes later, and I immediately laid my head once I got in the car.
"Are you okay,Madd?" Chloe asked with concern.
"Yeah. Just having some headaches." I replied with my eyes still closed.
"Are you sure? Why don't you just stay at home and take a rest?"Brooke said.
"It's just a headache. I will be fine." I replied.
I did not know that I fell asleep on the way to school.
"Madd,we are here." Chloe said, waking me up.
I looked around and noticed that we are in the parking lot.
"Sorry, I fell asleep." I apologized.
Chloe and Brooke looked at me with worry.
"I am fine. I promise. Now let's go before the first bell rings." I told them with assurance.
We all headed to our lockers before going to class. Thankfully, I did some advanced reading in History because I am having some hard time focusing on the lesson because of my headache. Good thing I am sitting at the back. Since we are watching some kind of documentary about World War I, the lights are closed. I laid my head down on my table while still trying to listen. I was woken up by someone tapping me on the shoulder.
"Hey, Maddie. The documentary is almost over." Ethan said when I opened my eyes.
I was still confused about what happened. It took me 30 seconds to realize what just happened.
'Oh shit! I just fell asleep in the class. I hope the teacher did not see me.'
I looked over to Ethan and thanked him for waking me up.
"Did you stay up late studying?" He asked.
"No. Just some headache." I replied before putting my attention on the documentary.
The documentary finished, and we were asked to write an essay about it. After giving us the criteria for the essay, we were dismissed. I grabbed my things and stuffed them in my bag.
"I'm going to my next class. See yah at lunch." I said to Chloe and Brooke before leaving.
"If your headache is getting worse, text me ok? I will drive you home right away." Chloe said.
"Yes, I will." I replied and with that I left for my Biology class.
For Biology, Mr. Bennett gave us seatworks. Thankfully, I was feeling better than this morning. I was doing my seatwork when I felt like a bile going up my throat. I excused myself to go to the bathroom right away. I threw up a little. I guess I am not better than this morning.
I was on my way back to the class, still with a little headache, when Ryan stopped me.
"Hey beautiful." Ryan said, pushing me a little towards the wall.
I was pushing him away from me, but he kept inching towards me.
"Leave me alone, Ryan." I said annoyed.
"Playing hard to get, huh?" he said while inching his face towards me.
My back hit the wall, and his body was just inches away from mine. I pushed him with all the strength I have got.
Why does this have to happen when I am not feeling well?
"Move, Ryan! Let me go!" I whimper. My headache was getting worse, and I felt dizzy.
I felt Ryan move, and I felt his breath by my neck. I was panicking and the next thing I knew Ryan was pushed off of me.
"What the fuck Ryan?!" I heard Ethan say. He was trying not to shout, but I can sense his voice with anger.
"What the hell, man?! It's just a kiss." Ryan said.
I did not hear what Ethan said after that, but Ryan left. My head was spinning and I could barely balance myself. The last thing I saw was Ethan running towards me.
"What happened to her?" I heard someone ask. From the sound of that voice, I know it's Chloe asking.
"She was on her way back to the class when I saw her leaning on the wall. I was going to approach her. Then she fainted. I caught her before she fell, so I brought her straight to the clinic.
I opened my eyes and looked around. I saw Brooke, Chloe and Ethan by the door. I was trying to sit up when Chloe saw me.
"You should not be sitting up, young lady." Chloe said.
"How are you feeling? Are you ok?" Brooke asked, worry visible in her eyes.
"I am fine. What time is it?" I replied.
"You already fainted and you are still worried about the time?" Brooke said. "I am taking you home right now."
Sophie is one of the nicest person but she is bad when she gets mad or when she worries. She is definitely mad at me because I insisted on going to school even though I was not feeling well.
"Sophie, it's just a headache. I am not dying." I reasoned. I know that it's going to make her more mad, but she often over worries.
Before she could even reply, the nurse came.
"How are you feeling, Maddie?" the nurse asked.
"I am feeling much better." I replied with a smile.
"That is good. You even look better than earlier when Ethan brought you here. You looked pale." she explained. "Did you feel anything other than the headache earlier?" she asked.
"I felt dizzy earlier, then I threw up a little before I fainted in the hallway." I replied.
"I see. I suggest you take the rest of the day off. You should rest at home. I will just write you an excuse slip." she said then left.
Chloe gave me the "look" that says, "I told you so!"
I looked around the room and noticed that Ethan already left. I never got to thank him for what he did and for bringing me to the clinic. I made a mental note to text him later.
After the nurse gave me medicine for later and my excuse slip, we left the clinic. I checked my phone, and it was lunchtime.
"Did you already eat Chloe?" I asked.
"I had a burger while we were waiting in the cafeteria for you, but only to find out you were in the clinic." she said. She is definitely mad at me.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to worry you." I said, linking my arms in Chloe's arms.
She looked at me and smiled. That is how Chloe is. She worries so much. She is such an amazing best friend.
We got to the parking lot, and she drove me straight home. We sang to the songs on the way home. When I got home, she gave me about a 100 lectures about "Why I should have stayed home" before driving off back to school. I went straight to my room and changed into my PJs. I went to the kitchen to make something to eat so that I could drink the medicine the nurse gave me. After my lunch, I went to my room and slept.
