Sallie's POV
Just thinking about what happened at St. Chaim Reform Academy made me feel torn.
I knew exactly how rotten that place was. The only reason I had made it out alive was because someone had risked everything for me. That was why I couldn't stand by and watch someone else be dragged into that same hell.
A moment later, I hurried over to Todd, crouched, and whispered, "I got kidnapped too. I can get you out, but you have to do exactly what I say."
Todd nodded without hesitation. He had already regained consciousness while I was at the door, keeping watch on our surroundings.
I could see how he looked at me - calm assessment mixed with a flicker of something that might have been sympathy. It was enough to tell me he was willing to trust me, though his posture stayed guarded.
His quick response gave me a bit of relief because if he had been the clueless type, I would have had to worry more about keeping myself safe than trying to help him.
