The private investigator handed over a thick file to Mr. Noah. "We followed your lead and actually dug up a clue."
"Just like you suspected, Greg sold those photos to the media. But do you know where Greg got them from?" he continued.
Webster had planned to shut down the investigation today. He should've moved on by now. Instead, he found himself asking, "Who?"
The investigator hesitated, clearly uncomfortable with what he had to reveal. He was paid to deliver results, though, and wasn't about to hold back from his client.
After a pause, he finally spoke. "Your sister, Jill."
"Impossible." Webster rejected it instantly.
"Jill has a good heart. She'd never pull something like this."
Even as he said it, buried doubts began surfacing again.
He stared at the file like it contained poison, unable to force himself to open it for several long minutes.
The investigator had done his job. Whether Webster examined the evidence wasn't his concern, so he waited in silence.
