The Sixth Sense started with a huge bang!
It made over $36 million on its very first day.
You might think, "Is that a lot?" Well, you should know that the giant movie Titanic only made $28 million on its opening day. (Okay, Titanic was a different kind of movie that grew slowly, but still!)
In all of 1997, that $36 million was enough to put The Sixth Sense in the top five for opening days. It was just behind huge, giant movies like Jurassic Park 2 and Men in Black.
It was the number one movie of the day. It had won the daily box office championship!
The movie in second place was The Jackal. And here's a funny thing: the star of that movie was also... Bruce Willis!
Because of this, Bruce Willis called Zane first thing in the morning.
"Zane!" Bruce said, and Zane could hear how excited and happy he was. "I can't believe it! The number one and number two movies in the country are both starring me! Isn't that crazy?"
Bruce sounded so thrilled. "You know, I told you I was tired of just being an action hero. I really wanted to show people I could do something different. I wanted them to say, 'Hey, Bruce Willis can act!'"
Zane just laughed, happy for his new friend.
"Bruce, I can't take all the credit," Zane said warmly. "The movie is a hit because you were amazing in it. You're a huge part of this success, and you deserve it."
Zane and Bruce chatted for a while longer. As soon as he hung up, the phone rang again. It was Angelina Jolie!
"Wow, Zane, you don't know how happy I am!" she said, her voice full of excitement. "This morning, I just went out for a run, and a bunch of reporters surrounded me! They wouldn't leave me alone! They all wanted an interview!"
Of course she was excited! This was the first time she was ever chased by reporters like that. It just showed how popular The Sixth Sense was.
The theaters loved it, too. They gave the movie an "A+" rating, which is super rare for a scary movie. They called Wald Pictures right away and asked to show the movie on even more screens.
...
A little later, Zane finished getting ready. His bodyguard ,Dio , brought him a stack of newspapers.
"Boss, you've got to see this," he said with a smile. "This is the 'New York State Entertainment News,' the 'East Coast News,' the 'California Entertainment News'... look. They are all praising 'The Sixth Sense.'"
Praising him? Zane couldn't help but smile. It felt good to hear nice things.
But his bodyguard pointed something out.
"Boss, look at this," Dio said. "Remember a few months ago, when you bought a part of Titanic? This exact same newspaper was the one calling you an idiot. Now, they're saying you're a genius."
Zane just laughed and shook his head. "Yep, that's the media for you. They just go wherever the wind blows."
He wasn't mad. He just knew the truth. He knew how much hard work his whole team had put in to make this happen.
It wasn't just luck. Zane had made sure his whole company worked together.
They put ads on their UPN television network.
They got their new superstar singer, Eminem, to sing the movie's theme song.
They even put pop-up ads on ICQ.
They had worked so hard to promote this movie!
To make sure all their energy went into The Sixth Sense, his CEO Victor even agreed to move their other new movie, Final Turn 2, to next year. It was a big sacrifice.
Wald Pictures was still a small company compared to the "Big Six" in Hollywood, but this proved their hard work had paid off!
That $36 million opening day was the biggest opening Wald Pictures had ever had. It was a huge breakthrough. It was the moment that proved they were becoming a real, serious Hollywood movie company.
The good news just kept coming.
On Saturday, the movie made another $32 million.
On Sunday, it made another $25 million.
In just three days—the opening weekend—The Sixth Sense had made a total of $93 million.
It was the number one, undisputed box office champion in all of North America.
