Anderson Moorvan POV
The room was silent.
Too silent.
Rain tapped softly against the floor-to-ceiling windows while the city lights flickered below.
Anderson Moorvan stood with his hands in his pockets, staring at the skyline from the top floor of his headquarters.
His office was spotless.
Black marble floors.
Dark oak shelves.
Not a single thing out of place.
Except...
The framed newspaper tucked away inside one of the drawers.
Ipulled it out.
"Young Heiress Jay mariano Claims the Throne."
My jaw tightened.
"...Tch."
With one swift motion, i tossed the paper onto his desk.
Three years ago that race happened.
Three fucking years.
And people still talked about how I lost...and she won.
A knock echoed through the room.
"Come in." I said.
A man in a black suit stepped inside and bowed.
"Boss."
"What." I said without looking back.
"Our men confirmed it.They received the letter."
A slow smile spread across my face
"So...They're finally paying attention."
"Yes, Boss."
The guard hesitated.
"They've increased security around Miss mariano."
I let out a quiet laugh.
"I expected that."
"You don't seem worried." My man muttered.
"Worried?" I asked
I turned around, keeping my expression calm and said.
"I never planned to attack first."
The guard frowned.
"...Sir?"
I walk toward the large desk and sat down.
"They think the letter was a threat.....It wasn't."
"It was an invitation." I corrected.
The guard stayed silent.
I rested my chin on my hand.
"They'll waste time looking over their shoulders. They'll question everyone." I continued "They'll lose sleep.They'll make mistakes."
A faint smile tugged at the corner of my lips.
"And I'll simply watch."
I picked up the old newspaper again.
My thumb brushed over Jay's photograph.
"...Still smiling."
His eyes narrowed.
"I hate that smile."
The guard lowered his head.
"Boss...can I ask a question if you don't mind?"
"Shoot" i said.
"Do you truly believe she cheated?"
For the first time...
I answered without hesitation.
"...No."
The guard looked up in surprise.
"You don't?"
"I lost." I confirmed
"Everything was Fair and square."
Silence filled the office.
"I underestimated her. I thought she'd panic." I said
"I really thought she'd make just one mistake."
My grip tightened around the newspaper.
"She didn't."
Instead...
She crossed the finish line first.
Without cheating.
Without luck.
Without mercy.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"...Losing to a woman." I said barely audible.
Shooking my head i said.
"My father never let me forget it." I say.
He used to say 'You were beaten by someone younger than you.' 'Someone smarter than you.' 'Someone you looked down on.'.
I closed my eyes
Every sentence echoed in my mind like a curse.
My father had repeated them for months.
No.
Years.
Until they became impossible to forget.
I slowly folded the newspaper.
"I'm done acting like an idiot. No more reckless decisions. No charging in because I'm angry. If I want that throne..l'll earn it."
The guard nodded.
"What are your orders,sir?"
I looked out at the rain again.
"For now...Nothing."
"Let them wonder...Let them prepare.they're expecting a monster."
A faint smirk crossed my face.
"I'd rather be a ghost."
I slipped the newspaper back into the drawer and quietly locked it
"Jay mariano..."
"We'll meet again."
"And next time..."
"I won't underestimate you."
