Chapter 35 - sharing space?

Later — Outside the Dorms

Evening has settled.

Soft orange sky fading into blue.

Yuta stands near the railing.

He doesn't look tense.

But he's thinking.

You approach quietly.

He notices anyway.

Yuta Okkotsu: Are you alright?

You nod.

Then shake your head.

Then sigh.

Y/N: When she said it.

He knows immediately.

Yuta Okkotsu: "Mine."

You fold your arms loosely.

Y/N: That word triggered something.

He looks at the ground briefly.

Yuta Okkotsu: Rika doesn't mean it the way it sounds.

You glance at him.

Y/N: Then how does she mean it?

He chooses his words carefully.

Yuta Okkotsu: It's not ownership.

A pause.

Yuta Okkotsu: It's attachment.

You tilt your head slightly.

Y/N: There's a difference?

He nods slowly.

Yuta Okkotsu: Ownership restricts. Attachment clings.

You exhale.

Y/N: Tenchu didn't like it either way.

He studies your expression.

Yuta Okkotsu: It felt challenged.

You nod once.

Y/N: It stepped forward.

Yuta Okkotsu: Rika did too.

A quiet understanding passes between you.

Two forces.

Two protectors.

You look at him carefully.

Y/N: Does it bother you?

He blinks.

Yuta Okkotsu: What?

Y/N: That they reacted like that. Because of us standing near each other.

He doesn't answer immediately.

Honest, as always.

Yuta Okkotsu: It worries me.

You appreciate that he doesn't deny it.

Yuta Okkotsu: Not because I think Tenchu is malicious.

A small pause.

Yuta Okkotsu: But because Rika is protective in ways that aren't always… gentle.

You nod slightly.

Y/N: Tenchu isn't jealous.

He looks at you.

Yuta Okkotsu: No.

Y/N: It was guarding my choice.

He notices the emphasis.

Yuta Okkotsu: And what is your choice?

That question hangs between you.

Not heavy.

But important.

You step a little closer.

Deliberate.

Slow.

Tenchu doesn't flare.

Rika doesn't manifest.

The air stays still.

You hold his gaze.

Y/N: I don't belong to anyone.

He nods once.

Soft.

Yuta Okkotsu: I know.

A breath passes.

Then—

Y/N: But I also don't want to push you away because of them.

That's honest.

He looks surprised.

Not dramatically.

Just slightly.

Yuta Okkotsu: You're not pushing me away.

Y/N: Not yet.

A faint almost-smile touches his face.

Yuta Okkotsu: Then I'll stay where you're comfortable.

The air shifts gently.

Not tense.

Not defensive.

Tenchu hums low — aware, but not hostile.

Somewhere distant, faint—

Rika's presence stirs.

Watching.

Not angry.

But alert.

And for the first time—

There's quiet rivalry.

Not between you and Rika.

Not between you and Yuta.

But between two ancient attachments learning that proximity doesn't equal ownership.

Common Room — Evening

You walk in expecting quiet.

You get chaos instead.

Yuji Itadori is pacing dramatically.

Nobara Kugisaki is sitting cross-legged on the table.

Megumi Fushiguro looks tired already.

Yuji Itadori: THERE SHE IS.

You blink.

Y/N: Why are you yelling?

Nobara Kugisaki: Because apparently you almost started a mythical kaiju duel in the training field?!

You freeze.

Y/N: Panda told you.

Megumi Fushiguro: Panda told everyone.

From the couch—

Panda: I did not tell everyone. I told selectively.

Nobara Kugisaki: You said the ground cracked.

Yuji Itadori: And that Rika showed up.

He leans closer dramatically.

Yuji Itadori: And that Gojo-sensei used his "dad voice."

You groan.

Y/N: It wasn't like that.

Megumi Fushiguro: Then what was it like?

You hesitate.

You don't want to dramatize it.

Y/N: It reacted on its own.

The room quiets slightly.

Yuji drops the dramatic tone.

Yuji Itadori: Without you telling it to?

You nod.

Nobara hops off the table.

Nobara Kugisaki: Okay. First of all. Rude of it.

You blink.

Y/N: Rude?

Nobara Kugisaki: Yeah. You're the main character of your body.

Yuji nods aggressively.

Yuji Itadori: Exactly. Side characters don't get to improvise.

Megumi sighs.

Megumi Fushiguro: That's not how cursed phenomena work.

Nobara waves him off.

Nobara Kugisaki: I don't care. If something inside me tried freelancing, I'd fire it.

You laugh before you can stop yourself.

The tension in your chest loosens.

Tenchu stays quiet.

Listening.

Yuji studies you carefully.

Yuji Itadori: Are you scared?

The question isn't loud.

It's gentle.

You think.

Y/N: A little.

Nobara walks over and flicks your forehead lightly.

Nobara Kugisaki: Good. That means you're sane.

Megumi nods slightly.

Megumi Fushiguro: If you weren't worried, I'd be concerned.

Yuji suddenly grins.

Yuji Itadori: Also, if it ever tries anything weird, I'll punch it.

Megumi deadpans.

Megumi Fushiguro: That's not how that works.

Yuji Itadori: I'll punch the air aggressively then.

You laugh again.

And this time—

Tenchu doesn't shift.

Doesn't brace.

It hums low.

Calm.

As if recognizing—

These are yours.

Not threats.

Not claims.

Just friends.

Nobara narrows her eyes slightly.

Nobara Kugisaki: Also… this whole "mine" thing?

You stiffen slightly.

Nobara Kugisaki: That word would tick me off too.

Megumi glances at you.

Megumi Fushiguro: Did it feel like someone claiming you?

You nod faintly.

Yuji frowns.

Yuji Itadori: That's not cool.

Nobara crosses her arms.

Nobara Kugisaki: You don't belong to anyone unless you sign paperwork and even then I'd object.

You snort.

Megumi's voice is quieter.

Megumi Fushiguro: Tenchu reacted because it sensed that.

You look at him.

He meets your gaze evenly.

Megumi Fushiguro: It protects your autonomy.

That settles something inside you.

Not possessive.

Not jealous.

Protective of choice.

Yuji suddenly claps.

Yuji Itadori: Okay but next time warn us before you summon apocalypse energy.

Y/N: I didn't summon it!

Nobara Kugisaki: That's worse!

Laughter fills the room.

Light.

Warm.

For a few minutes—

You forget the weight.

And Tenchu stays quiet.

Learning.

Courtyard — Night

You sit alone on the bench.

Hands folded loosely in your lap.

The campus is quiet.

Too quiet.

The air shifts.

Heavy.

Dense.

Familiar now.

You don't turn immediately.

You just say softly—

Y/N: I know you're there.

A low ripple answers you.

Behind the trees—

A massive silhouette forms.

Edges distorted.

Eyes glowing faintly.

Rika Orimoto.

Not fully manifested.

But present.

Watching.

Your heartbeat picks up slightly.

Inside your chest—

Tenchu stirs.

Alert.

Not aggressive.

Just… ready.

Footsteps approach from behind.

Calm.

Measured.

You don't need to look.

Yuta Okkotsu stops a few steps away.

Yuta Okkotsu: I'm sorry.

You glance back at him.

Y/N: You felt her.

He nods once.

Yuta Okkotsu: She doesn't usually move without me.

His eyes flicker toward Rika.

She hasn't taken her eyes off you.

Not hostile.

Not snarling.

Just studying.

Like you're something new in her territory.

Tenchu shifts slightly—

A low hum.

Yuta notices.

Yuta Okkotsu: It's calm.

You nod.

Y/N: I told it not to fight her.

Rika tilts her head slightly.

Her massive form moves one step closer into the open.

Still no attack.

Just presence.

Yuta steps slightly to the side.

Not in front of you.

Not shielding.

But closer to center.

A silent mediator.

Yuta Okkotsu: Rika.

Her gaze flickers to him briefly.

Then back to you.

Yuta Okkotsu: She thinks you're a risk.

You exhale softly.

Y/N: Because of today.

He nods.

Yuta Okkotsu: Because when something targeted me… it wasn't her.

The honesty lands gently.

You swallow.

Y/N: I didn't tell it to do that.

Yuta Okkotsu: I know.

Silence settles.

Rika shifts again.

Her presence expands slightly—

Testing.

Tenchu reacts instantly.

Not attacking.

But stepping forward within you.

Like standing at your shoulder.

Yuta feels the pressure change.

Yuta Okkotsu: They're reacting to each other.

You look at Rika carefully.

Y/N: I'm not trying to take you from him.

The words feel strange to say.

But necessary.

Rika's form flickers.

Not anger.

Something else.

Possessiveness… softening into caution.

Yuta Okkotsu: She doesn't understand "sharing space" very well.

A faint almost-smile tugs at your lips.

Y/N: Neither does Tenchu.

Tenchu hums in quiet agreement.

No flare.

No surge.

Just awareness.

You slowly stand.

Not approaching Rika.

Not retreating.

Neutral.

Y/N: I don't belong to anyone.

The words settle into the night air.

Rika's gaze sharpens slightly—

Then drifts to Yuta.

Then back to you.

Evaluating.

Not as prey.

Not as rival.

But as variable.

Yuta's voice is steady.

Yuta Okkotsu: She won't hurt you.

You glance at him.

Y/N: I know.

A pause.

Y/N: Mine won't hurt you either.

That makes him look at you fully.

There's trust in that statement.

And responsibility.

The air stills.

Rika's massive shape slowly thins.

Edges dissolving.

Before fading completely—

Her gaze lingers one second longer.

Not hostility.

Not acceptance.

But awareness.

Then she's gone.

The courtyard feels lighter.

Yuta exhales quietly.

Yuta Okkotsu: That went better than earlier.

You nod faintly.

Y/N: She was studying me.

Yuta Okkotsu: Yes.

A small silence passes.

Y/N: Was she jealous?

He considers.

Yuta Okkotsu: Protective.

Then softer—

Yuta Okkotsu: And uncertain.

You glance at him.

Y/N: So are we.

That makes him smile faintly.

Not romantic.

Not heavy.

Just honest.

The night air settles peacefully.

Inside your chest—

Tenchu quiets.

Alert.

But no longer bracing.

For now—

There is balance.

Temporary.

Fragile.

But real.
