I knew the exact second this morning went completely wrong.
It wasn't when Emma came down the stairs. She looked a little lost, trying to hide the fact that she'd just woken up in my house. That part wasn't the problem.
It wasn't even when my sister, Elena, started asking questions. You know, with that sharp, knowing tone of hers. She was digging, but I could handle Elena.

I didn't even need to look up to be sure it was him. The change in Emma was enough. It was a small shift, but it was there. Her shoulders straightened a little. Her focus became sharper, more intense than it had been when she was talking to anyone else at the table

That single word sounded too easy, too familiar between them. It suggested a closeness I hadn't known about, and the implication hit me with surprising force.
