Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Trouble

The morning sun shone through my bedroom window, making the dark wood of the furniture glow. My room looked like something from a history museum, all old and expensive. My alarm clock started beeping, breaking the quiet. I reached out from under the warm blankets and slapped it to shut it off.

I slowly sat up, leaning my back against the wooden headboard. I kept my eyes closed for a moment, then slowly opened them. The room looked the same, but I felt completely different.

"I actually had a really good sleep," I mumbled to myself. It was surprising, after all the crazy stuff that happened yesterday with the powers and the pain. I looked at the sun coming through the window, feeling its warmth on my skin. I finally got out of bed and walked over to a small table where a glass and a water container sat. I poured myself a glass of water and drank it all in one go.

"Going to school again is actually exciting," I thought, "well, not the classes, but everything else." I was looking forward to seeing everyone again, especially after what happened with Caroline yesterday.

After I finished the water, I did some simple stretches and then headed to the bathroom to wash up. I came out a little while later with a towel wrapped around my waist. I walked over to the giant wardrobe and opened it. It was full of expensive clothes.

"Okay, what to wear today?" I said, looking at all the choices. I wanted to look good but not like I was trying too hard. I finally picked a simple black shirt and a pair of dark blue jeans. "This should work. It's normal, but it looks good."

I got dressed and looked at myself in the full-length mirror. I combed my hair with my fingers until it looked right. "Not bad," I said to my reflection.

Down in the kitchen, I poured some cereal flakes into a bowl and added milk. I heated it up in the microwave. Alistair, the butler, made sure the kitchen was always stocked with food, all paid for with my money, of course. I ate the warm cereal quickly, grabbed my bag, and headed out to my car.

The drive to school was short. I parked the Camaro in the student lot and got out, walking slowly toward the main building.

Elena's Point of View

I was walking toward the school, carrying my books in my arms. The morning air was cool and fresh. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about my parents. It was hard to be happy sometimes. But then I thought about Alex Smith. He lost his parents too, and just yesterday, he seemed so different. So much stronger.

"I have to really try to get over the past," I whispered to myself. "Just like Alex is doing. Otherwise, I'm just wasting my time and making myself sad."

Just as I had that thought, I looked up and saw him. Alex. He was walking toward the school from the parking lot. Our eyes met by chance.

"Morning, Alex," I said, giving him a small smile.

"Morning, Elena," he replied, his voice calm.

He looked right at me, and for some reason, I found it hard to look away. His eyes were so intense, like he could see right through me. My mind seemed to get stuck, just looking at him.

He smiled a little. "You look more beautiful than yesterday," he said.

I felt my face get warm. "Oh, really?" I said, feeling a little shy.

"If you don't believe me, you can ask someone else," he said, his smile growing.

I shook my head and looked right back at him. "No, it's okay. I believe you."

We started walking together toward the classrooms. It felt nice. For a moment, I didn't feel so alone.

Alex's Point of View

I was just about to say something else when a voice I recognized all too well came from behind us.

"Hey, Alex! Elena!"

It was Caroline. She was walking quickly toward us, with Bonnie following behind her, looking confused.

I feel quite nervous seeing Caroline because I am just trying to flirt with Elena . Just be calm and handle it, I said to myself.

Caroline walked right up to us and didn't stop. She stepped directly between me and Elena, linking her arm through mine like she owned me. She turned to Bonnie, who was just staring at us with wide eyes.

"See, Bonnie?" Caroline said, her voice loud and proud. "This is my new official boyfriend."

My brain stopped working for a second. I turned my head to look at her. My eyes were wide. I didn't say anything, but my face was asking the question for me: What the hell are you talking about? When did I become your boyfriend?

Elena looked just as surprised as I was. She took a small step back, her smile gone.

Bonnie finally found her voice. "Your what? Since when?" she asked, looking from Caroline to me and back again.

Caroline just squeezed my arm tighter. "Since yesterday, obviously," she said, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. "We're together now."

I was still trying to find the right words to say.I looked at Elena, who now looked uncomfortable, and then back at Caroline, who was smiling like she'd just won a prize.
