Chapter 160 - Chapter 27 — The First Night of Fear, Part5

Part 5 — If Orders Come

Renjiro looked down at Haruto's trembling hand for a moment.

Then gently placed his own over it.

"…Hey."

His voice stayed calm.

Steady.

"…Look at me."

Haruto slowly lifted his eyes.

Another horn echoed faintly in the distance.

Farther away this time.

BWOOOOOM—

Haruto flinched again.

Renjiro spoke before the fear could settle deeper.

"…You remember what I told you before?"

Haruto stayed quiet.

Renjiro gave a small pat on his head.

"…Panic spreads faster than danger."

"…So first, breathe."

Haruto tried.

But another rush of movement passed across the rooftops outside.

Kaito looked toward the window nervously.

"…There's so many…"

Ayame silently moved closer to both of her brothers.

Not frightened in the same way—

but alert.

Watching everything carefully.

Akari noticed immediately.

Even now, Ayame was observing instead of reacting.

A distant voice suddenly echoed through the streets.

"Sector Three patrol unit moving out!"

Another voice followed somewhere farther away.

"Barrier checkpoint active!"

The village sounded alive in a way it normally never did at night.

Kaito swallowed slightly.

"…It really is serious…"

Akari walked toward the children slowly.

Then knelt beside them.

"…Listen to me carefully."

All three looked at her immediately.

Her expression was calm.

Gentle.

But firmer than usual.

"…This is only a mobilization order."

"…No one is fighting here."

"…So you don't need to be afraid."

Haruto tried to nod—

but his grip on Renjiro's sleeve still hadn't loosened.

Akari's eyes softened slightly at that.

Then another flare briefly lit the distant sky blue through the window.

The room dimmed again a second later.

Kaito looked toward it immediately.

"…What was that?"

Renjiro answered this time.

"…Signal flare."

"…Communication between units."

Kaito looked down quietly after hearing that.

Even he understood what it meant.

More shinobi.

More movement.

More war preparations.

For a few moments, the only sounds were the distant horns and the movement outside.

Then Haruto spoke quietly.

"…Are you going too…?"

The room went silent again.

Akari's gaze shifted slightly.

Renjiro looked at Haruto calmly.

The hesitation lasted only a second.

But the children noticed it.

"…If orders come," Renjiro answered softly,

"…then probably."

Haruto's expression fell immediately.

Kaito looked down.

Even Ayame's eyes shifted slightly at the answer.

Another group rushed over the rooftops.

Fast enough that their shadows flashed across the room ceiling for an instant.

The atmosphere felt heavier with every passing minute.

Akari slowly stood again.

"…Alright."

She forced a gentler tone.

"…That's enough for tonight."

She looked at the three of them carefully.

"…Come here."

Kaito moved first.

Ayame followed quietly.

Haruto hesitated—

then finally let go of Renjiro's sleeve and stepped forward too.

Akari pulled all three close gently.

For a moment, the distant war sounds outside faded behind the warmth of the embrace.

But only for a moment.

Because beyond the walls of the house—

the village was still preparing for something unknown.
