Chapter 5 Identity in Crisis

The next morning, sunlight poured through the blinds, cutting across the quiet hospital room.

Adrian sat on the edge of the bed, flipping through a report from his assistant.

Every detail about the "woman" who saved him was written there—

but the name "Elena Carter" didn't exist anywhere before two years ago.

Two years.

Before that, there was nothing.

No records, no address, no past.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

He didn't believe in coincidences—especially not ones that smelled like secrets.

> "Find out who she really is,"

he said coldly, tossing the file aside.

"And check the boy. Ethan Moore."

The assistant hesitated.

"Sir, the boy is just five. You don't think—"

Adrian's gaze turned icy.

"Do as I said."

Meanwhile, on the other side of town—

Elena was folding Ethan's clothes when the phone buzzed.

Sophie Carter's voice came through, panicked.

> "Elena, are you out of your mind?!"

Elena frowned. "Sophie?"

> "I just got word from a friend inside The Blackwood Group. Adrian's people are digging around—your name came up!"

Elena's fingers froze midair.

For a moment, she couldn't breathe.

"He's… investigating me?"

> "Yes! And not just you. Ethan too. He knows the surname Moore means something!"

Elena pressed her forehead, panic rippling under her calm exterior.

"I changed everything—documents, address, even my accent. He shouldn't be able to trace me."

> "Elena, you underestimate him," Sophie said grimly. "Adrian Blackwood doesn't chase ghosts unless he's already sure the ghost exists."

Outside the window, Ethan's laughter drifted in the wind.

Elena turned to see him chasing a stray kitten down the street, his tiny figure glowing in the morning sun.

Her chest tightened.

> "Sophie," she whispered, "if he finds us… what should I do?"

On the other end of the call, Sophie was silent for a long time before replying,

> "Then you do what you should've done five years ago—

run."

Elena's hand trembled as she looked down at her son's smiling face.

But this time…

she wasn't sure she could run again.
