Chapter 34: The Seven Deadly Sins — The Meaning of the Ten Commandments
"Whitebeard and Red-Hair invited you aboard?"
Inside Impel Down, the long silence finally shattered. Everyone stared at Satan in disbelief, mouths agape. Even Garp was no exception.
"Brat, stop bragging.
"Whitebeard and Red-Hair are Yonko of the New World. They would invite you aboard?
"And Blackbeard too? Never heard that.
"Quit gilding your face. Hungry for fame?
"You think that makes you look important?
"I'm telling you, impossible."
The Impel Down officers murmured among themselves. Whitebeard and Red-Hair were Yonko. To be invited by both at once would take unimaginable clout.
"Kid, you truly aren't lying?
"You met Whitebeard and Red-Hair?" Garp asked, face stern.
"Vice Admiral Garp, you don't believe that, right?
"He's obviously padding his story to dodge punishment and get into the Marines," the officers cried.
"No. There's no point to him lying," Garp said gravely, eyes never leaving Satan.
Faces flushed all around. A moment ago they had called it boasting, and Garp had believed him, which only made their doubt look foolish. What on earth was so special about Satan that all these giants tried to recruit him.
"Do I have flowers on my face," Satan said. Though he was a prisoner being escorted into Impel Down, his mood was excellent.
"Relax. I didn't join.
"And I won't join.
"I'm used to all beings looking up to me, not the other way around.
"Enough chatter. Since we're at Impel Down, let's get inside."
He strode grandly toward the prison, leaving them stunned once more.
"How arrogant.
"I, Hannyabal, have been in Impel Down for decades and this is the first time I've seen a man walk in on his own.
"Most pirates are scared flat by the gate.
"He's the least like a criminal of any criminal I've seen," Hannyabal muttered.
"Doesn't that make it more fun?
"I can hardly wait," purred Sadi in her pink leather, taking off after him.
"Vice Admiral Garp, leave the three to me. Rest assured, I will not allow any evil to leave. I stake the honor of Impel Down," Domino said, hurrying after them.
"Damn it, does the brat think this is his house," Hannyabal spluttered. Usually they hauled prisoners in by force. Now the prisoner marched in on his own and Impel Down's people trailed behind like attendants.
"Utter humiliation.
"I won't allow such insolence in Impel Down," he fumed, stomping after them. Then he froze. "Bad. My ambition slipped out again…"
"These people…" Garp was left in a swirl of confusion. The Impel Down crew felt entirely unreliable.
"Let's hope Magellan disciplines the kid. If he can't be turned to justice, may he at least not fall into evil," Garp sighed. Satan was the first man he couldn't see through. Invitations from both Whitebeard and Red-Hair were no common honor, especially Red-Hair, whose crew prided itself on elite ranks. To board that ship, you had to be a top-class fighter or a prodigy.

"Ding. Ten Commandments task complete.
"Ding. Congratulations. You have obtained Piety."
Piety, subordinate form for Vivian: anyone who shows disrespect with their back turned to Vivian will be judged as disrespecting Satan. Enemies are forced to submit to Vivian and become one of her slaves. The curse persists until Vivian lifts it, and the cursed remain her servants.
"A subordinate version," Satan mused. "System, does that mean there is another version of Piety?"
"Reporting to the host. The Seven Deadly Sins and the Ten Commandments each have a host version and a subordinate version. The subordinate version is a branch of the host's power."
With the explanation, Satan understood.
The Seven Deadly Sins absorb emotions to increase the host's strength. The Ten Commandments grant laws.
The Sins are the source that empowers the host. The Commandments are the manifestation of that power.
Both are parts of Satan's strength.
A subordinate version means Satan can bestow the Ten Commandments and the Seven Deadly Sins upon others. For example Wrath or Sloth. As long as the recipient feels enough wrath or indolence, their potential will be stirred and might grow even greater. The corresponding Sin they generate then flows back to Satan, reinforcing him, as if he had many bodies cultivating in unison.
The Ten Commandments, meanwhile, express Satan's power. How strong a given Commandment is depends on Satan's own strength. So long as an enemy's power does not exceed his, a Commandment will forcibly take effect. The Ten Commandments uphold Satan's majesty.
Vivian triggering Piety before it had been upgraded was an anomaly.
