Chapter 6 - Soul Evans

Maka and Nate stood on one of the many terraces of the DWMA looking over Death City. They stood close enough to where Nate could smell her apple scented perfume and the scent of old books like when they'd first met.

"And this is where we have the best view of the city, in my opinion anyway." Maka said.

She'd been tasked by Sid with showing Nate around the campus, to show him where he figured he'd be spending most of his time from now on.

Nate scooted closer to her as they overlooked the city from the balcony, utterly unafraid of what would most likely be a fatal drop for a normal person if they fell off the terrace. He didn't know if he was unafraid due to Excalibur's power or because he with Maka but either way he was happy in the moment.

Maka stood back up from leaning and looked around the terrace, there was the occasional student who'd walk by but whoever she was looking for hadn't appeared yet much to her dismay.

"He's always late, no matter where we're going he always manages to be late!" She growled and took out her phone. Her fingers flew across the screen in an angry text before putting the phone back into her black coat pocket.

Nate watched her with concern for a moment before asking, "so who are we waiting for up here?" Maka turned to look at him utterly forgetting to clue him in on what they had been waiting for whilst she was giving him a tour of the grounds.

"Oh, we're waiting on Soul, he's my weapon partner. I think the two of you would get along well." Nate's heart immediately felt as if it would deflate on the spot...

"He's your partner? Like you guys are together? That's great!" He said, obviously misunderstanding what she'd meant by partner.

Maka blushed and got a little flustered.

"Oh, no no not like that. I mean we're together for school stuff but we're not like together, together."

"Ahh, okay, I get what you mean." Nate said, a sense of relief washing over him. He didn't know why the thought of Maka being with someone else had made him feel so defeated, he'd barely known her. Maybe it was because she was the first person he'd met in this strange place.

Whilst they looked at each other neither one of them had noticed a spiky white haired boy with vermilion eyes walk up to them till he was right behind where Maka stood.

"Sup, this the guy you were talking about Maka?" Soul asked as he coolly walked passed her and leaned against the terrace balcony with his back to the city.

"Yes, this is Nate. He's a new student here, I think you'd get along pretty well with him." She said as she also walked over to the terrace balcony.

Soul outstretched a fist for a fist bump towards Nate and he gave one back and the two could immediately feel they were on the same wavelength coolness wise.

"So you're a weapon too? Maka told me a bit about you." Nate asked.

"Yup, a regular ol' scythe weapon. I can show you if you wanna see." Soul said as he walked away from the terrace balcony and stood in front of Maka and Nate.

"You can turn into a scythe? That's so badass, yeah show me dude." Nate said with a child like wonder and excitement in his eyes.

"Here take a look." Soul said before sticking out his right arm in a flash of light before his arm was replaced with a long curved red and black scythe blade.

"What do you think of that? Pretty cool huh." Soul said, obviously basking in Nate's clueless amazement at something the other students would consider absolutely ordinary.

"Can we please talk about something else ugh." Maka said with an exasperated sigh. "This isn't even why I called you over Soul."

Soul just blinked at her as he turned his scythe blade back into his normal arm in another brief flash of light.

"Oh yeah now I remember, you wanted to ask this dude if he wanted to-" Maka immediately pounced onto soul, covering his mouth before he could spoil what Maka wanted to ask Nate herself.

"I wanted to ask him you jerk!" Maka said giving soul a light chop on the head for threatening to take away the surprise.

"Fine, fine you ask him then!" Soul said pushing away from his mouth and walking a ways away from her.

Nate just watched this with a bit of amusement, but also worry. He had no idea what Maka could possibly want from him of all people.

Maka walked right up to him and stared deep into his eyes as she said, "Nate I wanted to ask you... will you accompany me and Soul on our mission tonight."

Nate felt as if he'd keel over comedically from shock.

"That's what you wanted to ask me? Haha...Yeah sure I'll go with you guys. Not sure how much help I'll be compared to Soul but..." Nate said, trailing off before he could finish his thought.

"I have to warn you, It'll be dangerous. We're hunting the famous serial killer Jack The Ripper. He's been spotted in Death City so its our job to hunt him and take his soul." Maka said, her eyes taking on a steely determination that was unlike her usual demeanor.

"But I don't even properly know how to transform into a weapon, won't I just get in the way?" Nate asked as he turned one of his arms into an Excalibur blade in a brilliant blinding flash of light, the likes of which dwarfed Soul's transformation in every way.

"You're strong Nate...I haven't seen a demon weapon like you before, you definitely have what it takes to help out on this mission." Maka said as she nodded and pointed to Soul.

"Plus...we have a resident experienced demon weapon that you can ask any questions about how to fight."

That's when the PA speaker system of the school sounded off and Maka and Soul's ears both perked up as it said, "Scythe meister Maka and Soul Evans, please report to the Death Room."

"That's us Soul, time to suit up!"
