Unit 1: The Lion and the Rabbit
A cruel lion lived in the forest. Every day, he killed and ate a lot of animals. The other animals were afraid the lion would kill them all.
The animals told the lion, "Let's make a deal. If you promise to eat only one animal each day, then one of us will come to you every day. Then you don't have to hunt and kill us."
The plan sounded well-thought-out to the lion, so he agreed, but he also said, "If you don't come every day, I promise to kill all of you the next day!"
Each day after that, one animal went to the lion so that the lion could eat it. Then, all the other animals were safe.
Finally, it was the rabbit's turn to go to the lion. The rabbit went very slowly that day, so the lion was angry when the rabbit finally arrived.
The lion angrily asked the rabbit, "Why are you late?"
The rabbit replied, "I was trying to hide from another lion in the forest. That lion said he was the king, so I was afraid."
The lion told the rabbit, "I am the only king here! Take me to that other lion, and I will attack him."
The rabbit replied, "I will be happy to show you where he lives."
The rabbit led the lion to an old well in the middle of the forest. The well was very deep with water at the bottom. The rabbit told the lion, "Look in there. The lion lives at the bottom."
When the lion looked into the well, he could see his own face in the water. He thought that was the other lion.
Without waiting another moment, the lion jumped into the well to attack the other lion. He never came out.
All the other animals in the forest were very pleased. The clever rabbit had saved them all with a trick.

1. afraid (adj): sợ hãi, lo sợ

3. angry (adj): tức giận
The lion was angry when the rabbit finally arrived. (Con sư tử đã tức giận khi con thỏ cuối cùng cũng đến.)

4. arrive (v): đến, tới nơi
The rabbit finally arrived at the lion's cave. (Con thỏ cuối cùng cũng đến được hang của sư tử.)

5. attack (v): tấn công
The lion wanted to attack the other lion in the well. (Con sư tử muốn tấn công con sư tử kia ở trong giếng.)
The army prepared to attack the city. (Quân đội chuẩn bị tấn công thành phố.)
A wild dog attacked him in the street. (Một con chó hoang đã tấn công anh ấy trên phố.)
6. bottom (n): đáy, phần dưới cùng
The lion lived at the bottom of the well. (Con sư tử sống ở dưới đáy giếng.)
He found his keys at the bottom of his bag. (Anh ấy tìm thấy chìa khóa ở dưới đáy túi của mình.)

7. clever (adj): thông minh, lanh lợi
The clever rabbit saved them all. (Con thỏ lanh lợi đã cứu tất cả bọn họ.)
She is very clever at solving math problems. (Cô ấy rất thông minh trong việc giải các bài toán.)
That was a clever idea! (Đó là một ý tưởng thông minh!)
8. cruel (adj): độc ác
A cruel lion lived in the forest. (Một con sư tử độc ác sống trong rừng.)
He was a cruel man who punished his workers badly. (Ông ta là một người đàn ông độc ác, người đã trừng phạt công nhân của mình rất nặng.)
It is cruel to hurt animals. (Thật độc ác khi làm hại động vật.)
9. finally (adv): cuối cùng
Finally, it was the rabbit's turn. (Cuối cùng, cũng đến lượt của thỏ.)
After waiting for hours, the bus finally arrived. (Sau nhiều giờ chờ đợi, xe buýt cuối cùng cũng đến.)
She finally finished her homework at midnight. (Cô ấy cuối cùng cũng hoàn thành bài tập về nhà lúc nửa đêm.)
10. hide (v): trốn, che giấu
The rabbit said he was trying to hide from another lion. (Thỏ nói rằng nó đang cố trốn khỏi một con sư tử khác.)
Let's play hide-and-seek. (Chúng ta hãy chơi trốn tìm.)
He hid the money under his bed. (Anh ấy đã giấu tiền dưới gầm giường.)
11. hunt (v): săn bắn
You don't have to hunt and kill us. (Ngài không cần phải săn và giết chúng tôi.)
Tigers hunt other animals for food. (Hổ săn các loài động vật khác để làm thức ăn.)
People used to hunt deer in this forest. (Người ta đã từng săn hươu trong khu rừng này.)
12. lot (n): nhiều (thường dùng: a lot of)
He killed and ate a lot of animals. (Nó đã giết và ăn rất nhiều động vật.)
I have a lot of work to do today. (Hôm nay tôi có rất nhiều việc phải làm.)
She put a lot of sugar in her coffee. (Cô ấy đã cho rất nhiều đường vào cà phê của mình.)
13. middle (n): ở giữa
The well was in the middle of the forest. (Cái giếng ở giữa khu rừng.)
Don't stand in the middle of the road. (Đừng đứng giữa đường.)

14. moment (n): khoảnh khắc, chốc lát

15. pleased (adj): hài lòng, vui vẻ

16. promise (v): hứa
If you promise to eat only one animal... (Nếu ngài hứa chỉ ăn một con vật...)

17. reply (v): trả lời, đáp lại
The rabbit replied, "I was trying to hide..." (Con thỏ đáp lại, "Tôi đang cố gắng trốn...")
He didn't reply to my text message. (Anh ấy đã không trả lời tin nhắn của tôi.)
"I don't know," she replied softly. ("Tôi không biết," cô ấy nhẹ nhàng đáp.)
18. safe (adj): an toàn
Then, all the other animals were safe. (Khi đó, tất cả các loài động vật khác đều được an toàn.)

19. trick (n): mưu mẹo, trò lừa
The clever rabbit had saved them all with a trick. (Con thỏ lanh lợi đã cứu tất cả bọn họ bằng một mưu mẹo.)
The magician performed a magic trick. (Nhà ảo thuật đã biểu diễn một trò ảo thuật.)
Don't play tricks on your friends. (Đừng chơi khăm bạn bè của bạn.)
20. well (adv): tốt, giỏi
The plan sounded well-thought-out. (Kế hoạch nghe có vẻ được suy nghĩ kỹ lưỡng/tốt.)
She speaks English very well. (Cô ấy nói tiếng Anh rất tốt.)
