Captain America pressed his hand hard against his forehead. He should have realized it sooner. If these were meant to be humanity's final weapons, then of course the trucks were carrying live nuclear warheads. But after years of working with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s endless parade of advanced technology, he had grown accustomed to believing that science could always provide a cleaner, smarter solution. Deep down, he had still hoped that this time would be no different — that there might exist a weapon sharp enough to cut through despair without crossing the final line.
Reality, however, was a brutal reminder: when everything else failed, mankind always turned to its oldest sin — destruction.
And that truth struck especially cruelly for those who had sworn to save the world.
"Nick—!!" Captain America's furious roar exploded across the communication channel, the sheer rage in his voice powerful enough to make every listener's eardrums ache.
"Captain, I'm here," came Nick Fury's weary reply, calm but hollow.
"You'd better explain what the hell this is," Captain America demanded, his voice trembling with restrained fury. Fury's composure forced him to steady his own voice, but no amount of discipline could suppress the storm brewing inside him. The idea that his comrades had been led unknowingly to their own deaths was beyond forgiveness.
Fury sighed softly, as though he had anticipated this confrontation. "Things have spiraled beyond our control, Captain. These evolved zombies — their potential for further mutation is limitless. If we don't end it here, now, the result could be a catastrophe humanity can never recover from."
"And your solution," Captain America snapped, "is to have us fight tooth and nail to escort nuclear bombs into the heart of New York — only to blow us all sky-high? That's your plan for saving the world?"
Fury's tone hardened. "Then tell me what else we can do, Steve! Should I keep sending soldiers to die in the streets? Should I sit back and let the infection grow until it gives the rest of the world an excuse to nuke New York themselves?"
He drew a deep breath, forcing calm back into his words. "I've already reported the zombie evolution data to the World Security Council. The U.N. emergency assembly is meeting as we speak. You and I both know what their final decision will be."
The mention of the United Nations made Captain America's heart sink. He understood the gravity of the situation — yet it didn't make Fury's decision any less abhorrent. To him, America turning its own weapons on its own soil was a sin that could never be justified.
"Then warn them!" he shouted. "If any country authorizes a nuclear strike, we treat it as an act of war! Even if we have to stand alone, we will protect our land!"
"You're still as idealistic as ever, Captain," Fury said with a faint, bitter smile. "Yes, nuclear deterrence might keep the other nations from acting rashly. But what then? These creatures are evolving faster than we can contain them. They'll break through the quarantine — soon. When the truth reaches the public, when they see their cities fall and realize what we hid from them… do you really think civil chaos will be less destructive than a nuclear strike?"
"Then we end it before that happens!" Captain America barked. "The zombies are being controlled by HYDRA, through those mental command helmets, right? If we find their control center and destroy it, their army collapses into chaos. Without coordination, we can finish them off!"
Fury gave a tired, almost pitying laugh. "You think I haven't considered that? But how, Captain? How do we find their control hub in this wasteland? The X-Men and the Fantastic Four already died trying to breach those zones. Every squad we've sent has been wiped out. Our forces are exhausted. What army do you expect to fight this battle?"
Captain America's answer was immediate, unwavering. "Us!"
He stood tall, though only Black Panther now remained beside him. Yet when he spoke, it was as if an invisible army of heroes stood at his back.
Fury couldn't help but smile — weary, but almost proud. As a realist, he had long since stopped believing in impossible odds. But Captain America… he was the impossible.
Still, Fury's voice was grave as he gave his final warning: "We're going to lose."
"Then we'll lose together."
With that, Captain America ended the transmission.
At that moment, his choice could not have been more selfish — nor more human. He had placed America's honor and the fate of the world on the same scale, and chosen the one he could not bear to see fall.
It was reckless. It was irrational.
It was Captain America.
The embodiment of a nation's conscience — the unshakable spirit of American justice.
Turning to Black Panther, he spoke with renewed resolve. "King T'Challa — I've heard you're as brilliant a scientist as you are a warrior. That vibranium suit you wear… it's your own creation, isn't it? Tell me, can you dismantle the detonation systems on these nukes?"
Black Panther examined the trucks silently, his gaze tracing the intricate mechanisms of the warheads. After a moment, he nodded slightly. "I can try," he said, voice measured. He knew full well he could succeed — but what he questioned was the wisdom of doing so. "But, Captain… are you sure this is the right path?"
"Do it first," Captain America said firmly. "We'll decide right and wrong later."
He turned toward one of the trucks, where the American flag fluttered weakly amid the rising smoke. His expression softened — weary, but resolute.
"At the very least," he said quietly, "I can say this — my conscience is clear. My actions are pure. What I'm fighting for… is justice."
He paused.
"American justice."
Black Panther finally understood. Captain America was — and had always been — America's champion, not the world's. His loyalty was not to the planet, but to the people and ideals of his homeland.
There was no condemnation in that realization — only truth.
Because, in the end, every hero fights for the justice they believe in.
