Chapter 5 - Audience with Kaido

Previously on:

After defeating Dragan, the Tempest Beast, Alex had demonstrated the first fusion of his Devil Fruit powers, igniting both fire and lightning in a raw display of instinctual mastery. But Kaido had felt the shockwave. The Emperor's attention now turned toward him — a predator observing a fledgling with lethal curiosity.

---

The doors of the main chamber of Onigashima opened with a thunderous groan, shaking the stone floor beneath Alex's boots. The torchlight flickered across massive pillars adorned with chains and carved dragon motifs. The air was thick with heat and the lingering scent of smoke, remnants of the battle in the banquet hall. Pirates scattered to the sides, bowing, muttering, their gazes fixed on the newcomer. Alex's steps were steady, though his heart was pounding with a mixture of anticipation and exhilaration. This is it, he thought. The Emperor himself.

At the far end of the chamber sat Kaido of the Beasts, the so-called "Strongest Creature in the World." His massive frame dominated the room, his head nearly brushing the vaulted ceiling. Even seated, he exuded power, the aura of a being who had shattered the laws of men and seas alike. His hair was long and wild, curling around his shoulders, and his eyes burned with an almost imperceptible glow of threat and amusement. Around him, a few of his top lieutenants lingered in silence, watching Alex with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity.

Kaido's voice broke the oppressive quiet. "So… this is the one who dares to survive my Tempest Beast." The rumble of his words vibrated through the hall. "You've got fire. You've got lightning. But do you have the spine to stand before me?"

Alex squared his shoulders, feeling the familiar pulse of his Devil Fruit thrumming beneath his skin. I'm here. I've survived worse. I will not bow.

"I don't fear you," he said firmly, letting the words carry. "I'm here to prove my strength."

A chuckle echoed, low and resonant, like the grinding of boulders. Kaido leaned forward, resting his massive hands on the throne. "Bold words. Most die before they even speak them. But… interesting. Very interesting."

The Emperor's gaze swept over Alex like a storm, piercing through the sweat, ash, and energy lingering in the young warrior's aura. Every movement of Kaido's massive frame seemed measured, deliberate, as though the air itself bent to his will. Alex felt it immediately — the subtle pressure, the invisible pull of a power far beyond anything he had experienced. Even the combined might of fire and lightning within him felt fragile in comparison.

"Tell me," Kaido said, his voice softer now but no less menacing, "why do you want to be an emperor? Power? Fame? Or… is it something more… personal?"

Alex's eyes met Kaido's. It's ambition. It's survival. It's dominion. "Because I will be the strongest. Not just to rule, but to survive. To change the world itself."

Kaido's smile widened. "Hah… audacious. Most would choke on those words before reaching your age. You may have survived Dragan, but do you think that counts for anything against me? Against the storms I command?"

Before Alex could respond, the room darkened suddenly. Shadows coalesced and surged toward him — Kaido's aura manifesting physically, testing his perception. The young warrior's instincts flared. Fire arced around his right arm, lightning dancing across his left. He spun, twisting through the attacks, each one controlled by Kaido's overwhelming Haki. Debris flew around him, and the very pillars seemed to groan under the weight of the invisible force.

He's testing me, Alex realized, dodging instinctively. Every movement, every gap — he's showing me where I am weak.

Kaido laughed, a sound like rolling thunder. "Good. You see it now. Survival isn't about offense. It's about reading the currents, predicting the tides… and still standing when they break over you."

Alex's hands formed a circle in front of him. Fire and lightning entwined in perfect unison, coiling and crackling as he adjusted his stance. He leapt forward, sending a surge of Stormfire toward the air itself, cutting through the shadows Kaido had summoned. Sparks collided with the invisible pressure, creating an explosion of light and heat that made the onlookers flinch.

Kaido's eyes narrowed. "Ah… the Stormfire… intriguing. You've improved since your first test." He leaned back, letting the sheer weight of his presence wash over Alex. "But potential alone won't make you emperor. Instincts, yes. Ambition, yes. But experience… control… strategy… that is what separates kings from insects."

Alex gritted his teeth. He had felt the force of Kaido's Haki pressing on him, had tasted the difference between instinct and mastery. I'll learn it. I'll surpass it. Every lesson, every blow… will make me stronger.

Kaido's expression darkened, and he gestured. From the shadows, Dragan and two other lieutenants stepped forward, combining their powers with Kaido's aura. The room became a battlefield of pressure and elemental energy. Alex's eyes widened at the scale of the challenge, but he smiled faintly. Finally… a real test.

He unleashed Stormfire again, sending arcs of electricity dancing along the walls and sheets of flame sweeping across the floor. He dodged attacks with Haki-assisted reflexes, rolling, leaping, spinning — every movement honed by instinct and the previous battle. Sparks and fire met dragon claws and Haki-infused strikes. The room erupted in chaos, a storm contained within stone walls, shaking with the force of their confrontation.

Kaido observed silently, his massive form like a mountain, letting Alex prove his courage, his ingenuity, and the raw potential of his power. Each strike, each counter, each calculated movement by Alex impressed the Emperor. This boy… he may yet become interesting, Kaido thought, the faintest trace of amusement flickering in his eyes.

Hours seemed to pass in minutes. When the dust finally settled, Alex stood, chest heaving, his body smoking, clothes torn, but his eyes alight with determination. Kaido leaned forward, his massive hand tapping against his throne in a slow, deliberate rhythm.

"You've got guts, boy," Kaido said finally. "You've survived my test… but the real challenge awaits. Survive in the New World, face my lieutenants, confront the storms of this world… and maybe, just maybe, I'll meet you again personally. Until then… grow. Learn. Burn your way to strength. Prove that you are worthy of the oceans themselves."

Alex nodded, swallowing exhaustion and adrenaline. I will. His hands still hummed with residual energy, the Stormfire flickering softly, a reminder that his journey had only begun. I will become an emperor. I will surpass Kaido. Every step… every battle… will bring me closer.

As he was escorted back to a temporary chamber, the weight of the day's events pressed upon him. He had faced the overwhelming presence of an Emperor indirectly, tested his instincts against near-divine power, and emerged alive. But he knew now that every Emperor he would face would demand more — more strategy, more control, more ruthlessness. The New World was unforgiving, and only those who adapted would thrive.

Alex allowed himself a single thought as he collapsed onto the cot, closing his eyes for the first time that day. I am alive… I am learning… and one day… the Heir of the Apocalypse will reign over these seas.
