Three days later:
Wu Suo Wei was going stir-crazy.
Three days locked in the mansion.
"You're pacing," Guo Cheng Yu observed from where he sat guarding Wu Suo Wei's door. "That's never good."
"I need to do something. I'm a doctor—I need to help people, not sit in a gilded cage."
"Tell Chi Cheng. Maybe he'll set up a clinic here or something."
Wu Suo Wei stopped. "Would he actually do that?"
"For you? He'd do anything." Guo Cheng Yu's phone buzzed. He read the message and stood abruptly. "Stay here. Don't leave this floor."
"What's wrong?"
"Zhao family just made a move. Chi Cheng's handling it, but—" He hesitated. "Just stay here. Lock the door behind me."
He left, and Wu Suo Wei felt panic rising. What if Chi Cheng got hurt? What if—
Gunshots echoed from somewhere in the mansion.
Wu Suo Wei's doctor instincts kicked in. Someone was hurt. Someone needed help.
He grabbed the first aid kit he'd noticed in the bathroom and ran toward the sound.
The scene in the main hall was chaos.
Chi Cheng's men were everywhere, guns drawn. And in the center, Chi Cheng himself—fighting three men at once, moving with lethal precision.
One of his men was down, bleeding from his shoulder.
Wu Suo Wei ran to him without thinking, dropping to his knees.
"Let me see—"
"Doctor Wu?! You shouldn't be here—"
"Shut up and let me work." Wu Suo Wei's hands moved with practiced efficiency, assessing the wound, "It went through. You'll be fine, but you need stitches."
A shadow fell over him. He looked up to find Chi Cheng standing there, fury in his eyes.
"What the hell are you doing down here?"
"Saving your man's life. What does it look like?"
"It looks like you're disobeying orders—"
"I'm a doctor! I heard gunshots, someone was hurt—I'm not going to hide in my room when I can help!"
Chi Cheng stared at him for a long moment, then something shifted in his expression.
"Zhang Wei," he barked to another guard. "Get the doctor whatever medical supplies he needs. Set up a clinic in the east wing."
"Boss?"
"You heard me. Dr. Wu wants to help? He can help. But only here. Only my men. Understood?"
Wu Suo Wei blinked in surprise. "You're... letting me work?"
"You're mine. That means what you need, you get." Chi Cheng crouched down beside him. "But you stay in this mansion. You treat my people. No one else. Deal?"
"Deal."
Chi Cheng's hand cupped his face, thumb brushing his cheek. "You're stupid but brave. I love that about you."
Before Wu Suo Wei could process those words—love....
—Chi Cheng stood and orders to his men.
"Clean this up. Find out how they got through security. And someone get Dr. Wu a proper medical setup. Now."
Two hours later:
Wu Suo Wei had a fully equipped clinic in the east wing of the mansion. It wasn't a hospital, but it was enough. He'd already treated three of Chi Cheng's men—the gunshot wound, a knife wound, and a broken arm from the fight.
Chi Cheng watched from the doorway the entire time, his eyes never leaving Wu Suo Wei.
When the last patient left, Wu Suo Wei finally looked at him.
"Thank you," he said quietly. "For this."
"I told you. What you need, you get." Chi Cheng pushed off the doorframe and walked over. "But you scared the hell out of me running toward gunfire."
"I'm a doctor. It's what I do."
"You're mine. That means you don't risk yourself." Chi Cheng's hands gripped Wu Suo Wei's hips, pulling him close.
"I can't just stop being a doctor—"
"I'm not asking you to. I'm asking you to be careful. To let me protect you." Chi Cheng's forehead pressed against his. "You matter to me, Wu Suo Wei. More than I thought possible. And I can't—I won't—lose you."
Wu Suo Wei's heart clenched at the raw emotion in Chi Cheng's voice.
"You barely know me," he whispered.
"I know enough.." Chi Cheng's lips brushed his ear. "And I know that every day I spend with you, I become more obsessed.."
"I thought I was yours?"
"It goes both ways." Chi Cheng pulled back to look at him, "You're mine. And I'm yours"
He kissed Wu Suo Wei then—
not rough but slow..
"Stay with me tonight," Chi Cheng murmured. "In my room. In my bed. Let me hold you."
"Just hold?"
Chi Cheng's smile was dark. "For now. Eventually? I'm going to make you scream my name. But tonight, I just want you close. Baby..."
Wu Suo Wei should say no. Should maintain boundaries.
Instead, he whispered, "Okay."
