Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Strange Visitors

It started just before sunrise, when the sensors blinked to life—an odd, flickering pulse that set everyone on edge. Alex and Lin huddled over the console, eyes gritty with tiredness, tracking the signal as it danced in and out of range. The tension was real; nobody said much, but everyone felt it deep in their bones. When the visitors finally appeared—three figures in patched-up suits, faces drawn and eyes darting around like they expected trouble—Alex's heart squeezed with a mix of worry and hope.

They greeted the strangers carefully, not with open arms but with open minds. Breakfast was awkward at first, conversation halting and wary. It was only after a few shared meals that the newcomers' voices started to thaw, their words thick and rusty from too many days spent alone. Rhea coaxed them outside into the garden, showing them the green shoots and bright flowers, letting nature do some of the talking. Mara, never shy, peppered them with questions—half teasing, half genuinely interested.

The shelter seemed to know what was needed. It offered up soft light, extra blankets, and bread that was still warm from the oven. But trust—real trust—came more slowly. Sometimes the visitors disappeared into their rooms early, shadows in their eyes, haunted by whatever they'd left behind. But little by little, the warmth of the group began to melt their reserve. There were late-night games that ended in laughter, stories told by the fire, and quiet moments when someone would reach out just to let them know they weren't alone.

Alex noticed the small things: Lin patiently showing one visitor how to fix a leaky water pump, Mia quietly pressing a mug of tea into trembling hands. Even the kids pitched in, dragging the newcomers into their games, their innocent questions and easy smiles working magic that words alone never could. The walls the newcomers had built around themselves didn't fall all at once, but one day, Alex caught them laughing with the others, and he knew they were finally, truly home.
