Chapter 44 - CHAPTER 44

Coruscant had known victory before.

It had celebrated the end of the Clone Wars.

It had celebrated the birth of the Empire.

It had celebrated the destruction of the Jedi.

None of those celebrations compared to what unfolded now.

The defeat of the Yuuzhan Vong had become more than a military triumph.

It had become proof.

Proof that no enemy, whether from within the galaxy or beyond it, could challenge the Empire.

For seven continuous days, Coruscant became one enormous celebration.

Billions filled the endless cityscape.

Imperial banners stretched from kilometre-high towers.

Victory marches echoed through every district.

Fleets of Star Destroyers performed synchronized flyovers above the ecumenopolis while thousands of TIE formations painted the skies with disciplined precision.

The Empire had survived its greatest war.

Now it would begin its greatest era.

Inside the Imperial Senate, every seat was occupied.

Representatives from tens of thousands of systems had gathered beneath the colossal dome.

Military commanders stood alongside governors.

Industrial magnates occupied the upper galleries.

Scientists, engineers, explorers, admirals, and diplomats filled every available space.

They were waiting.

The great doors opened.

Emperor Palpatine entered.

The applause began instantly.

It continued for several minutes.

When silence finally returned, the Emperor slowly approached the central podium.

His voice spread throughout the chamber.

"Citizens of the Empire."

Every holonet receiver across the galaxy broadcast the speech live.

"Today we celebrate more than victory."

Behind him appeared holographic images.

Imperial fleets.

Rebuilt cities.

Prosperous trade routes.

Recovered agricultural worlds.

"We celebrate survival."

The images changed.

Burning Vong worldships.

Destroyed biological fleets.

Grand Admiral Thrawn commanding the final offensive.

"The Yuuzhan Vong came believing that civilization was weak."

Palpatine smiled.

"They discovered instead that unity is stronger than fanaticism."

Thunderous applause erupted.

"They believed fear would divide us."

"They discovered discipline."

"They believed destruction would end our future."

"They created one."

The Senate stood.

Representatives applauded without restraint.

Palpatine allowed them several moments before continuing.

"The Empire has paid every debt inherited from the Republic."

Financial statistics appeared.

Economic growth.

Industrial production.

Trade expansion.

"Our citizens enjoy prosperity unprecedented in galactic history."

The display shifted once more.

Entire sectors under reconstruction.

New hospitals.

Universities.

Orbital shipyards.

Agricultural restoration.

"No world shall remain abandoned."

"No citizen shall be forgotten."

The applause returned.

Longer than before.

Deep within the audience, senior ministers exchanged approving looks.

Everything promised after the Clone Wars had come to pass.

Crime had fallen dramatically.

Trade flourished.

Piracy had nearly vanished.

The hyperlanes had never been safer.

The Empire had become exactly what billions believed it should be.

Stable.

Strong.

Unquestionably dominant.

The Emperor raised one final hand.

Silence returned.

"Our enemies have fallen."

His golden eyes swept across the Senate.

"But history does not end."

Behind him, the hologram changed.

The galaxy appeared.

Then slowly expanded outward.

Unknown space surrounded it.

Countless unexplored regions.

Entire dwarf galaxies.

Ancient stellar clusters.

Beyond those...

Nothing.

Only mystery.

"The future lies beyond."

"Our destiny is no longer survival."

"It is discovery."

He paused.

"And expansion."

The Senate erupted once more.

The Imperial Age had entered a new chapter.

Elsewhere...

On Exegol.

Construction continued.

The Dimensional Gate dominated the horizon.

Its enormous rings floated above the planet like artificial moons.

Since the war's conclusion, nearly every available industrial resource had been redirected toward the project.

Entire asteroid belts had been harvested.

Dead worlds dismantled.

Stars enclosed within Dyson harvesting arrays.

Everything existed for one purpose.

Power.

Enough power to awaken the Gate.

Darth Palpus stood within the central control complex.

Thousands of engineers worked beneath him.

The greatest scientific minds of the Empire had gathered here.

Humans.

Chiss.

Kaminoans.

Duros.

Muun.

Each represented the pinnacle of their respective disciplines.

Together they pursued a single objective.

Opening a doorway beyond the universe.

A senior engineer approached.

"My Lord."

"The latest report."

A holographic projection appeared.

Dimensional Gate Progress

Structural Completion...

100%

Stability Systems...

100%

Reality Anchors...

100%

Containment Matrix...

100%

Energy Reserve...

62%

Palpus studied the figures.

Still insufficient.

Three stars had already been consumed.

Two more remained under construction within dedicated stellar harvesting facilities.

"The projections?"

"If current harvesting continues..."

The engineer hesitated.

"...approximately eight standard months."

Palpus nodded.

"Accelerate every operation."

"Yes, my Lord."

Nearby lay another facility.

The Prima Fortress.

Ten million elite warriors trained without pause.

Even during peacetime, training intensified.

Veterans who had survived the Yuuzhan Vong War instructed newer generations.

Force combat.

Fleet boarding.

Planetary assault.

Void warfare.

Siege doctrine.

Combined arms operations.

Every scenario imaginable.

Each warrior wore armor continuously refined through battlefield experience.

Each weapon represented decades of technological evolution.

Each legion functioned as an independent army.

Together...

They represented the greatest military force ever assembled.

Palpus entered the primary training chamber.

Two million warriors stood perfectly aligned.

Absolute silence greeted him.

Their commander stepped forward.

"Lord Palpus."

He bowed.

"The First Legion stands ready."

Palpus observed them.

There was no fear.

No hesitation.

Only purpose.

He spoke calmly.

"You have defeated the Yuuzhan Vong."

Thousands listened without moving.

"You will face greater enemies."

No reaction.

"Stronger enemies."

Still silence.

"And perhaps one day..."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"...enemies from realities beyond our own."

The legion answered together.

"We obey."

Their voices shook the chamber itself.

Satisfied, Palpus departed.

Far away...

Grand Admiral Thrawn stood upon the bridge of the Judicator.

His war had ended.

His work had not.

Exploration fleets departed daily.

Unknown stars filled every display.

Entire sectors awaited classification.

Unlike many commanders, Thrawn understood that exploration required different thinking than conquest.

Every new civilization represented both opportunity...

...and uncertainty.

"Report."

An officer approached.

"The First Expeditionary Fleet has crossed beyond charted space."

"Any resistance?"

"None."

Thrawn nodded.

"Continue."

His red eyes drifted toward the unknown.

The Empire had conquered one galaxy.

Now it would learn what waited beyond it.

Within the Imperial Palace...

Father and son met privately.

The vast observation chamber overlooked the endless lights of Coruscant.

Neither spoke immediately.

Palpatine finally broke the silence.

"The war has strengthened us."

"Yes."

"The galaxy is secure."

"For now."

Palpatine smiled.

"You still think beyond it."

Palpus looked upward.

Beyond the atmosphere.

Beyond the stars.

Beyond the universe itself.

"The Force showed us possibilities."

"It did."

"And we have only begun to understand them."

The Emperor slowly nodded.

"I spent decades conquering a galaxy."

He laughed quietly.

"You seek to conquer existence."

Palpus answered without hesitation.

"If there are other realities..."

"...someone already rules them."

Silence filled the chamber.

Palpatine's smile slowly widened.

"Then eventually..."

"...they shall kneel as well."

Outside, billions celebrated peace.

Inside, two Sith looked beyond galaxies, beyond dimensions, and beyond creation itself.

The Galactic Empire had reached the height of its power.

Yet for Palpatine and Palpus...

This was not the end of their story.

It was merely the conclusion of the first campaign.

Beyond the stars, beyond the Dimensional Gate, an infinite multiverse waited.

And soon...

The Empire would march into it.
