Chapter 3 - Pranks and Postwick

The morning sun bathed Postwick in golden light. Tiny houses with red roofs dotted the rolling hills, and villagers strolled between market stalls chatting with their Pokémon. It was a peaceful, quiet morning, until a voice echoed from nowhere.

"Hey, mister, you dropped your wallet!"

A farmer turned in confusion, patting his pockets. "Eh? What wallet…"

A split second later, Niyah and Mimi appeared right behind him, giggling. Mimikyu's shadow slithered forward and tugged lightly at the hem of his coat, just enough to make him yelp and spin around, "Who's there?! Spirits?!"

Before he could blink, Niyah vanished in a shimmer of pink light, teleporting herself and Mimikyu behind a nearby house, both of them muffling their laughter behind their hands.

"Okay, okay, that was too  funny!" Niyah wheezed, tears in her eyes.

Mimikyu's cloth head tilted as she let out her signature, mischievous giggle. 'He looked like he'd seen a ghost'.

"Technically, he kind of did," Niyah teased.

Roty buzzed angrily beside her. "Btzz, btzz, unacceptable behavior! Warning: repeated use of psychic powers for pranking may result in social reputation penalty!"

Niyah snorted. "Oh come on, Roty, lighten up, it was just harmless fun!"

"Btzz, btzz, harmless is subjective!"

Still giggling, Niyah stepped out from behind the house and spinning neatly in place. "Alright, fine, fine. We'll be good now you wprrywart." She glanced toward the distant sleek, white building nestled near the town's center. "Let's go check in at the Pokémon Center, Mimi."

Mimikyu floated beside her, swaying happily. 'New town, new tricks?'

"Later," Niyah promised with a sly grin. "First, healing. Then chaos."

Together, the two strolled toward the Pokémon Center, laughter and sunlight trailing behind them as Postwick bustled with life once more.

After getting sidetracked with more pranks, taking snacks and such from food stands, the two trouble makers finally made their way to the center of town.

The doors to the Postwick Pokémon Center slid open with a cheerful chime as Niyah stepped inside, Mimikyu floating quietly beside her. The cozy lobby glowed in soft pastels, with shelves of neatly arranged potions, TMs, and Poké Puffs along the walls. A small crowd of locals sat near the reception area, chatting animatedly.

"…I'm telling you, he was white as a Yamper's fur!" one man said, voice hushed with excitement. "Swore up and down that spirits from the Slumbering Weald followed him home!"

Another villager chuckled. "Old Harlen's been saying that every other week. Last time it was 'a singing rock' that stole his hat."

"Yeah, but this time he said they talked to him!" a third added, eyes wide. "Voices in the air, giggling like kids!"

A ripple of laughter passed through the group.

Behind them, Niyah bit her lip to keep from bursting out laughing, her lavender eyes sparkling with mischief. Mimikyu tilted her cloth head toward her trainer, letting out a soft "Miii…" that sounded suspiciously like a giggle.

"Btzz, btzz," Roty buzzed, floating near her shoulder. "This Dex would like to remind user that tampering with civilian sanity is highly discouraged."

"Shh, we didn't tamper  with anything," Niyah whispered under her breath, barely suppressing another laugh. "Just… enhanced his imagination."

Roty sighed, a long, static-filled sound that conveyed pure robotic exasperation. "Btzz, btzz… children."

Trying to look innocent, Niyah approached the counter where Nurse Joy stood, her pink curls tucked neatly under her hat. The nurse smiled warmly as she looked up.

"Hello there, sweetie! Oh my—aren't you a bit young to be traveling alone?"

Niyah froze for half a second before flashing her brightest grin. "I'm twelve! But, um, I'm a registered trainer!"

"Most trainers don't start until sixteen," Nurse Joy said, tilting her head curiously. "You must be quite talented to have gotten your license early."

"Yup," Niyah said quickly, waving her Rotom Dex. "Super official and everything!"

"Btzz, btzz statement technically accurate," Roty confirmed in it a surprisingly monotone voice.

Joy's gaze softened, though her curiosity didn't fade. "And you came from…?"

"Oh, you know, around," Niyah said vaguely, glancing aside. "Lots of forests, big fields, some fog, a few ghosts, a couple berries."

Nurse Joy blinked. "...Right." Her eyes drifted toward Mimikyu, who was peeking shyly from her place on Niyah's shoulder. "And this little one? I've never seen a Mimikyu quite like it. Its aura feels… unusual."

Mimikyu gave a tiny wave with its ragged paw. Jumping up to float in front of Joy's face, startling her enough that she gasped softly.

"Did—did it just…?"

"She can fly!" Niyah said brightly. "Cool, right?"

Joy looked between them in stunned silence, then smiled tightly. "Very… unique, yes."

"So can you heal Mimi or…" Niyah raised her eyebrow.

"Ah, yes! Please return your Mimikyu to her Pokéball and wait a moment.

Twenty minutes have passed, Nurse Joy also ran scans on Mimikyu while she was being healed. Heaving learned of the moves that would be unusual for such a low leveled Pokémon to know. She had even more questions than when Niyah first arrived.

"Here is your Pokémon, also I wanted to ask-" Nurse Joy was unable to finish as she was cut off.

"Well! Anyway!" Niyah clapped her hands. "Could I get a room for the night, please? Mimi and I need a bit of rest after a that journey."

Joy blinked again. "Rooms for trainers are usually rented at a rate of—"

Before she could finish, Niyah lifted her Rotom Dex again. "Trainer ID verified, see? It's a Dex!"

"Btzz—registered under Niyah, system-verified active trainer," Roty added helpfully.

The nurse sighed softly. "Ah, yes… Rotom Dex holders do receive complimentary accommodations." She tapped a few keys, then pulled a small silver key from behind the counter. "Room 3B, upstairs on the left."

Niyah took it with a bright smile. "Thank you, Nurse Joy!"

Joy hesitated, her curiosity still nagging at her. "You're quite an interesting young lady, Niyah. I can tell there's a story behind you…"

"There's a story behind everyone," Niyah chirped, already backing away toward the stairs.

As she disappeared down the hall with Mimikyu and Roty floating at her heels, Nurse Joy sighed quietly and turned back to her terminal wanting to put note of the young girl in her system. However she was blocked due to an influx of trainers from the group of practice battles that always happened around midday.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Niyah and Mimikyu collapsed on the bed, laughing quietly as Roty floated nearby, still sighing.

"Btzz… one day your antics will get us all banned from a town."

"Maybe," Niyah said between giggles, "but at least we'll have fun doing it."

Mimikyu nodded, its cloth head flopping forward in agreement. 'Best. Team. Ever.'

Fourty minutes later Nurse Joy was finally free to make her edit to the system. She first made a note in the collective Pokcenter system, noting a suspiciously young trainer with and equally suspicious Mimikyu. She then opened a private message channel and typed a quick note:

To: Champion Leon

Subject: Unusual Trainer in Postwick

A young girl named Niyah just checked in, registered trainer, but only twelve years old.

Her Rotom Dex is functional, though I can't trace its registration region. Nor who registered it in the first place.

She has a Mimikyu with the remarkable ability to levitate and abnormal moves for its level.

You might want to meet her while you're in town. She has dark skin, lavender eyes, and white curly hair.

Joy hit send and exhaled softly. "Another mystery in this town next to the Slumbering Weald," she murmured. Meanwhile…

Niyah stretched, hair messy from the short nap she took, while Mimikyu floated in lazy circles around the ceiling fan.

"Alright, Mimi," Niyah said with a sly grin. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"

Mimikyu's cloth head tilted mischievously. 'Prank time?'

"Prank time."

The plan was simple: Mimikyu would use its ability to make them both go invisibility. Niyah would distract Nurse Joy while Mimikyu would mess with the vending machine's systems, making it "magically" spit out free Snacks.

As they peeked from behind the lobby corner, Niyah whispered, "Okay, on my signal—"

But just before she stepped out, Mimikyu froze. Its little eyes glowed faintly. 'Hey, she's typing something over there. Let's see what's she doing!'

Niyah squinted. Nurse Joy's computer screen was still open, an email half-finished. Mimikyu drifted silently closer, invisible, while Niyah crouched behind the counter edge. She squinted her eyes as she read over Nurse Joy's shoulder.

To: Champion Leon

Subject: Unusual Trainer in Postwick

"A young girl named Niyah… only twelve… Rotom Dex untraceable region… advanced Mimikyu with psychic connection…"

Niyah's jaw dropped. "She reported me?!" she whispered indignantly.

'We're famous! 'Mimikyu squeaked in delight.

"Or in trouble," Niyah muttered. "The champion of the region is here in town. No way we can take him, we gotta move. Or…"

'Or… we could have fun first.' Mimikyu snickered mischievously.

Niyah's grin returned. "You read my mind."

"Of course I accept!"

Niyah and Mimikyu snuck into Postwick's small outdoor market, where vendors were setting up for the day. Using Double Team, Mimikyu created five illusions of itself darting between the stalls while Niyah teleported between them in quick bursts, pretending to chase them.

To the townsfolk, it looked like an invisible whirlwind of unidentifiable chaos, berries rolling, paper bags flying, a Wooloo baa-ing in terror as an apple landed on its head.

"By Arceus, they're everywhere!" a fruit seller cried, clutching his basket.

"No, no, they're multiplying!" another yelled.

"Old man Harlem was right!" A trainer screamed.

Roty buzzed overhead, panicked. "Btzz, btzz damage control protocol active! Please cease prank operations before economic instability occurs!"

Niyah and Mimikyu collapsed behind a stall, laughing so hard she could barely breathe. "Okay, okay, maybe that was a little much—"

A faint, voice echoed from down the path. "Oi! Anyone seen a young girl with a Mimikyu?"

Niyah's laughter died instantly. "Oh no, Leon! Mimi we gotta move!"

The next stop was the bakery. While hiding, Niyah noticed a delivery cart stacked with Poké Puffs and cupcakes bound for the Pokémon Center. Inspiration struck instantly.

With a mischievous grin, she whispered, "Mimi… invisible frosting fight."

The result? Chaos.

Floating cupcakes, levitating frosting swirls, and invisible hands sneakily stealing cherries off the top. The baker's assistant screamed, "The Puffs are haunted!" and fainted into a sack of flour.

By the time the flour settled, giggles echoed from every corner, and Niyah teleported them both behind a nearby bush, covered in frosting.

'Totally worth it,' Mimikyu wheezed telepathically.

"Totally," Niyah agreed, licking frosting off hand sleeve.

Roty groaned. "Btzz, btzz, you two are singlehandedly responsible for the collective stress levels of Postwick reaching critical thresholds."

"Aw, don't be dramatic," Niyah teased.

Later that afternoon, they snuck near the outskirts of town where a few villagers were repairing a wooden fence. Niyah's teleportation ability sparked a dangerous idea.

"Okay, so what if we teleport just one of the fence posts every few seconds?" she whispered to Mimikyu.

'You mean make it look like it's disappearing?' Mimikyu inquired.

"Exactly."

In less than two minutes, the workers were in chaos.

"I swear it was right here!"

"No, this one's shorter!"

"Why are there holes now?! Did the Wooloo chew it?!"

Niyah had to clamp a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing out loud, while invisible Mimikyu drew tiny ghost faces on the fence with chalk.

But their fun was cut short when a familiar voice rang from across the hill.

"Oi! You there! Stop right there!"

Leon's booming, good-natured voice carried like thunder as he jogged into view, his cape fluttering behind him. "You match the description Nurse Joy sent me, little trainer, mischievous, Mimikyu companion—"

"Gotta go!" Niyah yelped.

Leon sprinted toward them, determination blazing in his eyes. Niyah and Mimikyu dashed through the field, laughter echoing. The Champion's Charizard swooped overhead, roaring as Leon shouted, "You can't hide forever!"

"Who said anything about hiding?" Niyah smirked, grabbing Mimikyu's tiny paw, as she teleported.

With a brilliant flash of pink light, the two vanished, reappearing briefly behind Leon on a fencepost.

"Hi!" Niyah called cheerfully.

Leon spun around. "Wha—how did—"

"None of your business!" she chirped, giving a mock salute. "Bye, Mr. Champion!"

Before he could reach them, they vanished again, reappearing at the very edge of the Slumbering Weald.

Mimikyu was laughing so hard she was rolling in the grass. 'Did you see his face?!'

Niyah grinned, hands on her hips, wind tugging at her hair. "He's gonna remember us for sure."

Roty floated between them, sighing. "Btzz. Statistically, this partnership will absolutely end in a manhunt."

"Relax, Roty," Niyah said, smirking. "We're just getting started."

The mist of the Weald curled ahead, glowing faintly in the evening light. Mimikyu's shadow stretched beside hers as they stepped back into the forest, laughter fading into the whispering trees.

Meanwhile…

"Sorry Nurse Joy, those two were just too tricky. I believe you should add psychic powers to that note." Leon said in exasperation to woman behind the counter.

"Psychic powers? I figured something was up with the way that Mimikyu was… I wonder where they came from." Nurse sighed before turning to the terminal.

"I don't know but we'll find out eventually, they have to stop at another Pokémon Center soon."
