As if on cue, Caroline reappeared with a tray. Eleanor poured them tea herself, smiling with quiet satisfaction as Bri and William exchanged a silent look, both knowing they were being manipulated.
Eleanor, however, carefully sipped her tea, studying the two faces before her.. her proud, guarded grandson and the beautiful young woman who looked like she was trying to disappear into her seat.
Finally, Eleanor set her cup down.
"I love you both as my grandson and my granddaughter," she began, her voice a little sad. "That's why I need you to listen carefully to me tonight."
William and Bri both turned to her, unsure what was coming.
"I know there have been... misunderstandings," Eleanor continued. "And I know, William, you still haven't explained yourself to Bri."
Her gaze shifted to Bri. "But you, you covered for him tonight. That was kind, but not right. You shouldn't have to do that."
Bri looked down, her fingers twisting together.
