Chapter 210: Hidan and the Secret of Jashin
"Time to dig that guy Hidan out," Alex floated up.
Tens of meters underground, he could clearly sense a life signature. It was as faint as a dying ember, yet it refused to extinguish. This immortal body certainly had its unique points. Surviving for months without food or water, reduced to just a head... Alex was curious how he managed it.
He flew above the spot where Hidan was buried. "This distance should be enough..."
Konan stood aside, watching quietly.
Whoosh!
Suddenly, the paper body flashed white and fired a beam of fluorescent light downward. Upon touching the ground, soil, grass, and stones were all annihilated, decomposed into an atomic state.
Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World!
Obtained from the Hidden Stone Village of a parallel world, along with many powerful jutsu and forbidden techniques unique to the Five Great Ninja Villages, Alex had copied and mastered them all. Dust Release was unobstructed, a massive weapon for annihilating matter. It penetrated tens of meters underground directly.
Calculated precisely, it stopped just above Hidan's head. Alex peered into the hole he had blasted. Only a thin layer of soil remained at the bottom, covering Hidan's head.
He controlled a sheet of paper to fly down, wrap around Hidan's head, and lift it out of the ground. It hovered in mid-air. Konan watched expressionlessly. Alex floated back to Konan's shoulder, also examining the head.
"Looks like months of starvation had some effect... He's practically a skull..."
It was no different from a skull; the flesh seemed to have vanished, leaving only a thin layer of skin wrapping the bone. His cheeks and eye sockets were severely sunken, and his hair had fallen out. It looked gruesome. His eyeballs were like shrunken sponges—shriveled and lifeless. If his nose hadn't been moving with slight breathing motions, he would have looked exactly like a dead man.
"Is he buried so long he's confused?"
Hidan's eyes were dull, showing no reaction. Alex sensed in detail. There was no complete soul in this head, only a mass of spiritual energy. As for why he could continue to survive... it seemed there was a special spiritual power within that mass. Perhaps related to the so-called Jashin... and the secret of his immortality...
Hiss!
The dazed head reacted, the sound of inhaling noticeably heavy. His eyes fluctuated, consciousness slowly returning.
"Cough, cough..." First a weak cough, then Konan's figure reflected in his pupils. He had fully sobered up. "White Tiger..."
His voice was extremely hoarse and barely audible. Months of starvation, while not fatal, had affected him greatly.
"L-looks... looks like... Akatsuki still remembers me..."
"But... it took too long... Where is that guy Kakuzu..."
He had thought it would be his partner Kakuzu coming to save him, not expecting it to be White Tiger.
Konan observed Hidan coldly, not answering.
"Hahaha..." Hidan laughed weakly. "Seems Kakuzu is dead... What a pity... He died so worthlessly. I should have performed the ritual and sacrificed him to Lord Jashin..."
"White Tiger..." His eyes rolled slightly to the side. "I can sense my other body parts; dig them out for me and sew me up. I need to recover my body. I want revenge on that Konoha ninja who plotted against me!!"
His voice was maniacal and full of killing intent. "That pineapple head deserves to be a sacrifice to Lord Jashin! Hurry—"
Hidan's voice stopped abruptly.
"Observation complete. You are no longer useful..." Alex floated above Hidan's head.
A beam of Dust Release shot down, and the terrifying head was instantly annihilated. Hidan died, but not completely. Usually, the moment a person dies, the soul automatically returns to the Pure Land.
Alex's paper body cast a curtain of purple light—the Soul Sealing Technique. It clearly illuminated Hidan's current state: a faint, black skeletal phantom with a small ball of white light in its mouth. It was extremely bizarre and terrifying.
The black skeletal phantom was not Hidan. The small white ball represented Hidan's spiritual body.
"Alex..." Konan frowned, on guard. The aura from the black skull was sinister. "Is this Jashin?"
"Probably..." Alex nodded. "To be precise, it's a manifestation of this so-called Jashin's power. If I hadn't used the Soul Sealing Technique to control it, this skull would have carried Hidan's spiritual body away..."
Most likely returning to Jashin's main body. He finally understood the purpose of Jashin spreading the faith of death and having envoys like Hidan perform sacrificial rituals. Souls! Or rather, spiritual power!
It was estimated that every person sacrificed would have a part of their soul or spiritual power bitten off by this skull and transported back to the main body of Jashin. Asuma Sarutobi had died from Hidan's ritual, yet he was reanimated in the Fourth War. Clearly, his soul was still in the Pure Land, only a portion of his power stolen by Jashin.
Alex felt that perhaps this so-called Jashin was wary of the Sage of Six Paths in the Pure Land... daring not to go too far and intercept the entire soul...
Konan reasoned through this as well. "It seems Jashin's main body isn't overly powerful..." She looked away, turning to Alex. "What do you plan to do?"
Alex grinned. "Go check out this guy's lair and see what this so-called Jashin actually is."
This was a local deity discovered alive in the current ninja world. The "gods" they had encountered before were all empty shells, leaving only traces of their existence. It was hard not to be curious about what these local deities from ancient times were and where they came from. Were they destroyed by Kaguya Otsutsuki after she ate the Chakra Fruit, or did they suffer some other accident?
Alex continued to activate the Soul Sealing Technique, sealing the skull and Hidan's spiritual body into a purple glass bead.
"Alex, how do we find where Jashin's main body is hiding?"
"Look." Alex floated the purple glass bead in front of Konan. "See the skull pattern on the surface?"
Konan nodded.
"I didn't seal it completely. According to its instinct to return automatically, we just need to follow the direction it points, and we will inevitably find Jashin's lair."
The glass bead turned slowly, but the internal skull pattern always moved to point in the same direction, like a radar.
Konan looked in the direction the skull was pointing. "In this direction..." She thought of Hidan's origin. "Yugakure, Land of Hot Water..."
"Jashin's main body should be hiding in the Land of Hot Water," Alex affirmed. "The so-called Jashinism also first appeared there."
Konan murmured agreement. "We should not delay. Let's go take a look."
She grabbed the purple glass bead and, following the directional guidance, flew straight towards the Land of Hot Water with Alex...
