Chapter 2 - The Girl who turned down mountain of proposal

Elara raced like a storm from the castle gate, her heart pounding as she hurried to her room, trying to hide away from her father's watchful eyes. She darted through the corridors, eager to escape the suffocating crowd and the heaviness of the evening's duties.

But the moment she reached the entrance to her chamber, she froze. There, already waiting for her with that familiar mix of concern and playful exasperation, was her father, Lord Cedric.

"Elara," he began, trying to suppress a sigh but failing humorously. "You've just turned down another proposal. How many is that now? Are you collecting them like trading cards?"

She couldn't help but giggle at the image, her spirit lifting slightly despite the seriousness of the topic. "I think I could fill an entire album at this point! But honestly, every time, it feels like I'm denying a path laid out for me, and I just can't see heading in the right direction."

Lord Cedric chuckled softly, running a hand through his hair in playful frustration. "I don't want to force you into anything you don't want, love. But you must understand that your choices have… how shall I put it—consequences, even if they might seem rather dull."

"Dull? More like a never-ending game of catch where I'm always the one running to fetch the ball!" Elara replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Besides, I could live just like this—helping you with your work, enjoying the gardens, and exploring our lands. It sounds like the perfect life to me!"

He raised an eyebrow, unable to hide his smirk. "Living with your father and helping with paperwork? Now that does sound thrilling."

Elara crossed her arms and pouted playfully. "It is thrilling! Think about it—I could assist you with all your duties, and you'd have the benefit of my charming company by your side. Much better than satins and silks at a ball!"

With a short laugh, Lord Cedric replied, "Oh, the tales that would tell! But really, just promise me you'll keep an open mind about the future. You may find value in someone you least expect."

Elara nodded, her expression softening. "I'll try! But I can't promise that I won't make a silly face during the proposals," she said, sticking out her tongue in a teasing manner.

"Fair enough!" he said, grinning. "Just know that I only want what's best for you, my little companion."

As their playful banter faded, Lord Cedric gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, his heart warm with affection. With a bittersweet smile, Elara watched him walk away, the laughter lingering in the air and easing the pressure of the evening. Eager for a moment of true escape, she sought refuge in the secluded corner of the garden, away from the bright lights and the flood of expectations, ready to embrace her own little adventure.
