Chapter 52 - Whereabouts Exposed

The Miss Red-Hair tugged at her somewhat ill-fitting uniform and glanced at Lex: "For your age, you have quite a rich experience, Mr. Lex."

I'm not that young anymore, Lex muttered in his heart.

Martha indeed took out her silver chain, buried in her cleavage, letting the ruby pendant on it hang vertically, then repeated in a very low voice:

"The ancient church before me holds danger caused by the beyonders."

"The one before me..."

After exactly seven repetitions, the chain moved. It swung clockwise with a considerable amplitude and speed.

Martha gasped, looking at Jeffrey: "Good thing I performed a Divination. There's danger in that church, and it's not a small danger!"

She stopped the silver chain again and modified the Divination statement: "Gore is in that church."

After repeating it seven times, the silver chain swung counter-clockwise this time, with neither a large nor small amplitude or speed.

"Hmm, it seems the target we are pursuing should not be in that church," the Diviner concluded, putting away her silver chain.

Jeffrey looked at the church with a solemn expression: "What kind of danger could be inside? Did the people of the Fourth Epoch build this church to suppress that danger?"

Martha had already put the silver chain back on, letting the ruby pendant slide into the deep cleavage: "This is not for us to worry about. Things like this should be left to those people to handle."

"It would be best to put up a warning sign here to prevent anyone from accidentally entering and triggering the danger inside," Jeffrey added, "This place isn't far from Enki Town."

Next, they carved a few lines of text on a large rock not far from the church.

"Evil spirits within, do not enter."

Jeffrey clapped his hands and said with little confidence: "I hope this will scare away those who come here."

Lex stood nearby and said: "Few people enter the mountains, and hunters mostly hunt near the foothills. Otherwise, the danger here would have been triggered long ago."

Martha nodded in agreement: "As soon as we return, we will report this matter, hoping that the danger here can be resolved soon."

Just then, the hunter Leon walked over and whispered: "Those wolves are moving again. It seems I was mistaken; this is not their territory."

"Let's go, we need to get out of here quickly." As a Seer, Martha's intuition was stronger than others, even if she couldn't hear the thumping sounds coming from the church and underground like Lex.

But she could feel a strange atmosphere, especially now that they were closer; this feeling became even more apparent.

Leaving the church and following the wild wolves, by evening, Leon found that the beasts had left Silver Snake Creek and ventured deep into a jungle.

"It seems we'll have to spend the night in the mountains," Lex looked at the gradually dimming daylight, feeling a little worried.

The others didn't look much more relaxed either; even Martha and Jeffrey had tightly pursed lips and wary eyes, having lost the optimism they had when entering the mountains during the day.

The reason was that church, Lex thought.

When the sun completely disappeared from the sky, and the night sky was dyed a serene indigo, and the crimson moon appeared on the horizon, Leon finally found the wolf pack's territory.

It was a valley in the mountains, not a large valley, at least from their current position on the hillside, it could be seen entirely.

Under the crimson moonlight, Lex, lying on the grassy slope, endured the harassment of mosquitoes, watching a dozen wild wolves in the valley below, either lying on the ground or moving about.

When they passed by a cave, they showed signs of fear. They would lower their heads, tuck their tails, and quickly move away from that cave.

Suddenly, a low growl echoed from the cave, and the wolf pack in the valley all looked towards it. Then an exceptionally large male wolf stood up and walked among the pack, like a king inspecting his army.

The beast, which was probably the alpha, stopped beside a wild wolf of neither large nor small size, growled a few times, and that wild wolf trembled all over as it walked out and headed towards the cave.

The pack surrounded it, seemingly to prevent its kin from escaping, and the chosen wild wolf finally entered the cave, and soon a mournful cry was heard.

But the wild wolves outside the cave all raised their heads and howled in unison towards the red moon in the sky.

"It seems we found the right place."

Martha, who had done the Divination, took out a perfume-like bottle and sprayed it on her hands and feet, and a fresh, pungent scent appeared in the nearby air.

At this point, the mosquitoes bothering Martha noticeably decreased.

Jeffrey had already started setting up the tent: "We'll monitor from here. Martha, you take the first half of the night, and I'll take the second half."

Martha sighed, her face somewhat unwilling but she didn't refuse: "It seems my skin condition is going to worsen during this period."

Lex smiled at her words, got up from the grassy slope, slapped a mosquito dead, and went to Leon's side.

Because they were worried about being discovered by the wolf pack, they dared not light a fire. Fortunately, the moonlight was bright tonight, allowing them to clearly see the surroundings and not worry about any beast approaching undetected.

"Thank you, Mr. Leon."

Lex sat down and proactively extended his hand, saying, "Thank you for your support."

Leon shook Lex's hand with a faint smile: "You're welcome, Mr. Lex. As a member of Enki Town, it is my honor to contribute to the Town's safety."

Taking advantage of the rare opportunity to spend time with the best hunter in the Town, Lex seized the chance to ask him some questions about hunters.

To better understand this role, and to better play it.

The night passed without incident.

The next day, Lex woke up and left the tent, seeing Jeffrey, who was on watch for the second half of the night, still energetic, as if tireless.

His pale skin and cold aura once again reminded Lex of the cold dead in coffins.

"Good morning," Lex greeted proactively, "Nothing unusual happened last night, right?"

Jeffrey shook his head, then said: "Mr. Lex, you and Martha should return to the Town later. I can monitor this place alone."

Is he going to notify Lewis and Warren to come over and deal with that monster together? That's right, Martha is a Seer and has no combat ability; keeping her here would only be a weakness for them.

I really want to stay and watch the battle. Lewis and the others are of a higher Sequence than me. If I could see how they fight, it should help my future development.

While letting his thoughts wander, Lex also nodded in agreement. He inadvertently glanced in the direction of the valley and suddenly noticed that white mist had risen in the valley at some unknown time.

"It's foggy?"

Jeffrey also noticed the anomaly. He stood up and cautiously approached the edge of the hillside.

White mist had risen in the valley, preventing him from seeing the situation below.

Just then, a mountain breeze blew from behind the camp, ruffling Lex's hair. At the same time, Lex smelled a wild scent in the wind.

When he smelled this scent, the figures of those unusual wild wolves flashed through his mind.

Not good!

It's the wolf pack!

Were we discovered?
