⚔️ Chapter 10:
The academy slept beneath a moon washed in silver haze. Clouds drifted lazily across the heavens, and the wind that whispered through the courtyard carried the faint chime of Ether wards woven into the marble pillars. The night was quiet — too quiet — as if the air itself was holding its breath.
Kairu Ryoku stood alone beneath the grand archway of the east tower, his reflection rippling faintly in the mirror-like floor of obsidian marble. The building loomed above him, tall and severe, its blackened spires reaching into the mist like fingers clawing for the moon. Soft trails of luminous silver ran up the structure's edges, veins of Ether that pulsed with a heartbeat all their own.
The student uniform he wore — a deep navy coat trimmed with white and silver, tailored to the precision of old Yorimashi tradition — fluttered slightly in the cold wind. The silver sigil of the academy, a crescent entwined with chains, glowed faintly over his left breast pocket. Beneath the coat, his inner tunic clung to his skin, still damp with the sweat of a sleepless night.
He hadn't slept since his meeting with Director Morimoto. The Director's words still echoed in his head, heavy and sharp like the toll of a bell: You are an anomaly… shadows gather… forces old as the world itself are waking.
Raviel's voice, soft as the wind brushing through paper screens, stirred within his mind.
>"You fear him" .
Kairu leaned against the cool stone wall, his breath visible in the cold night air. "He's powerful. More than he shows," he whispered. "And he knows things about us that he's not saying."
He fears what he cannot bind, Raviel murmured, her tone laced with quiet amusement. Even the wise build walls against the unknown.
A flicker of motion drew Kairu's attention. Across the courtyard, the reflection pool shimmered faintly, though there was no wind. Ripples spread outward in perfect concentric rings, distorting the moon's reflection. He frowned, pushing away from the wall.
The pool was sacred ground — a focus point of Ether that reflected both the physical and the spiritual planes. The academy's founders believed it to be a mirror between worlds, a place where the veil thinned just enough for whispers to pass through.
Tonight, it was whispering.
Kairu approached slowly. The stones beneath his boots gleamed with faint light, the sigils engraved into them alive with quiet hums of power. The air felt heavy, dense, as though reality itself was thickening.
The ripples stopped.
The surface of the pool went still, clear as glass. Kairu could see his reflection perfectly — pale face, dark hair, faint lines of exhaustion beneath his eyes. But as he stared, another image began to bleed through the surface.
Not his own.
A man stood behind him in the reflection — tall, shoulders broad, dressed in the black Yorimashi robes of a higher rank. His hair was longer, streaked with silver, and his eyes — his eyes burned like dying embers.
Kairu froze. His heart lurched. The air turned frigid.
"Who… are you?" His voice came out a whisper.
The figure's lips curved faintly, not quite a smile. The water rippled as if answering the unspoken call between them. When the reflection spoke, the voice was deep and layered, distorted by distance — and yet painfully familiar.
"Kairu…"
His name. Spoken in a tone that was both tender and haunting.
Kairu's breath hitched. "You—"
Before he could speak again, Raviel's voice lashed through his mind, sharp and cold.
Step back!
The pool erupted.
Ether surged upward in a violent burst of light, hurling Kairu backward. He hit the stone floor hard, the breath knocked from his lungs as silver mist coiled in the air. Within that mist, faint shapes twisted — the outlines of faces, eyes, hands reaching out. Whispering.
They weren't human voices. They weren't alive.
The shadows spoke in fragments, disjointed, ancient — but one phrase stood clear, repeated over and over in a low, guttural tone.
"The Moon's Chains tremble. The Brother stirs."
Kairu staggered to his feet, the air around him thrumming with violent Ether. The reflection pool blazed with light, and from its depths rose a column of silver flame. Within it, for the briefest instant, he saw the face again — the man with silver-streaked hair and burning eyes.
And he was smiling.
Then the image shattered.
The light collapsed, leaving only rippling water and the sound of Kairu's ragged breathing. The courtyard returned to silence, but the air remained thick with the residue of power.
Kairu clutched his chest, his pulse pounding. "Raviel… what was that?!"
Her voice trembled faintly — something rare for her. That name… that presence… I have felt it before. A fragment of power intertwined with yours. Blood calls to blood.
He froze. "You mean—"
Yes. A pause. The one they call Shinjiro Ryoku.
Kairu's blood ran cold. He hadn't heard that name since he was a child. His older brother — the one who had vanished years ago without a trace, the one their parents refused to speak of.
The moonlight flickered across the pool again, faintly illuminating the sigils along its edge. And for just a moment, as the water rippled, Kairu could swear he saw the faint outline of a chain stretching deep into the reflection — disappearing into the darkness below.
Raviel's voice softened. He is calling to you through the Veil. But his voice carries corruption. He no longer walks in the light of the living.
Kairu turned his gaze skyward. The clouds had parted, and the moon now hung fully revealed, vast and luminous. A red haze bled faintly across its lower edge — subtle, but unnatural.
He whispered to the wind, "Why now…?"
The courtyard torches flickered. The air shifted again, and the whisper of the spirits returned — soft, insistent, circling around him like a chant.
"Ryoku… Ryoku… Ryoku…"
The sound rose and fell, echoing through the stone arches like a living heartbeat. He stumbled backward, pressing his hands to his ears. "Stop it!"
But the whispers didn't stop. They grew louder, weaving into Raviel's voice, until the words merged into something almost coherent — a prophecy spoken through a thousand dead throats:
"The blood of two… bound by moonlight… shall unmake the chains of heaven."
Then — silence.
The torches went out. The moon dimmed.
Kairu stood alone in the courtyard, trembling, breath shallow, the prophecy burning itself into his thoughts like a brand.
Raviel's presence flickered faintly, her tone unreadable. The shadows remember what the living forget. You cannot outrun what you are.
Kairu closed his eyes, steadying himself. The wind brushed past, carrying with it the scent of rain and Ether. He looked once more into the reflection pool — now calm, harmless, ordinary. But he could still feel the faint hum beneath it, the echo of something vast stirring beyond the world's thin veil.
He turned and walked back toward the dormitories, the moon casting his shadow long and pale across the stone path. In that reflection, for just a heartbeat, a second shadow walked beside him — taller, stronger, older.
His brother's.
And though no sound reached his ears, Kairu knew the truth of what the shadows had whispered.
The world of the living and the dead was bleeding together.
And his brother… was calling from the other side.
