⚔️ Chapter 24:
The moment Kairu spoke the chamber's name, Haruto's breath hitched. A tremor of disbelief crossed his expression, quickly shadowed by fear.
"Kairu… the Raviel Chamber is sealed for a reason. It's off-limits to everyone, even instructors." Haruto swallowed hard. "They say it reacts violently to unstable bonds."
Kairu didn't slow. His boots pounded against the stone floor as they tore through the hallway, Ether lanterns streaking past in blurred arcs of pale blue. Behind them, the heavy metallic thud of Tribunal boots echoed — slow, deliberate, but gaining.
"They'll catch us if we stay out here," Kairu said. "And if they take me…"
His chest tightened.
"I don't know what they'll do."
[Raviel will not allow it.]
The spirit's tone thrummed beneath his skin. [But you must reach the chamber before they force my hand.]
They turned sharply, entering a dimly lit wing of the academy — one Kairu had rarely seen, even in passing. This corridor was colder than the others, the walls carved with old, archaic spirals that shimmered faintly with trapped Ether memories. The air vibrated with a low hum, as if the space itself remembered too much and spoke too little.
Haruto glanced over his shoulder.
"They're coming faster."
Kairu pressed forward until the floor sloped downward, leading to an arched metal door reinforced with blackened sigils and layered seal plates. It emanated an oppressive gravity — a sensation like standing too close to a cliff edge on a stormy night.
The Raviel Chamber.
A relic older than Velis Sol itself.
Kairu stepped closer, the sigils flickering in recognition. Raviel stirred inside him, not with hostility this time, but with an almost reverent resonance.
[It remembers me.]
Kairu placed his hand against the cold surface.
At once, the sigils flared — not blue, not silver… but a deep, molten crimson that radiated from beneath Kairu's palm like veins igniting under his touch.
Haruto stumbled back. "Kairu—!!"
The seals unraveled in slow, grinding motions — not opening, but accepting. The layers shifted, gears unlocking in patterns impossible to track, ancient mechanisms awakening from centuries of silence.
A deep rumble shook the corridor.
"Kairu," Haruto whispered, voice trembling, "this isn't normal."
"Nothing about my bond has been normal," Kairu muttered, watching the last seal glow brightly, then fade. "We don't have a choice."
Behind them, the Tribunal agents' footsteps halted.
Kairu and Haruto froze.
Two silhouettes appeared at the corridor's far end, framed by flickering lantern light. Their silver masks gleamed like moonlit blades.
"Kairu Ryoku," the lead agent said, "do not step inside that chamber."
Haruto spoke quickly. "You can't follow him in there! That place reacts to any Ether thread that isn't—"
The second agent cut him off. "Which is precisely why we cannot let him enter either."
Their hands lifted — Ether chains swirling like serpents ready to strike.
"Kairu, go!" Haruto grabbed his arm, pushing him toward the door. "I'll slow them down!"
Kairu's heart wrenched. "Haruto—"
"Don't argue! MOVE!"
The Tribunal chains shot forward.
Haruto slammed his palms onto the floor, releasing a burst of gold Ether that cracked the stone and formed a barrier of intertwined seals. The chains struck the barricade with violent force, sparking shards of blue light.
Haruto shouted through grit teeth, "GO!!!!"
Kairu turned, slipping into the chamber just as the door began sealing itself again, the sigils re-locking in rapid, angry pulses.
The Tribunal agents lunged.
The final seal slammed shut.
Darkness swallowed Kairu.
---
At first, he couldn't breathe.
The chamber was not cold or warm — it was absolute, as if the air and the space itself were suspended in an unfinished moment of time. His footsteps echoed too sharply, like he stood in a place where sound was not meant to exist.
[Raviel's chamber…]
Raviel's voice was different — deeper, distant. [Kairu, listen carefully. You must remain calm.]
A faint glow ignited around Kairu's hand — the mark pulsing like a heartbeat.
A soft whisper followed.
Not Raviel's.
Something older.
Something layered.
Something familiar.
Kairu's skin prickled as shapes began emerging from the darkness — not objects, not walls, but floating fragments of translucent memory, suspended like shards of frozen light.
In one fragment, a silhouette stood tall, cloaked in ancient Yorimashi armor, gripping a spear of pure Ether.
Another fragment showed a vast battlefield of distorted spirits swirling like storms.
Another — a child's hand, small, trembling, reaching toward someone.
Then—
A fragment glided slowly toward Kairu, stopping at eye level.
His breath stilled.
Inside this fragment…
Was him.
Much younger.
Five, maybe six years old.
Standing in a field of broken crystal, crying.
He whispered, "What… is this…?"
[Raviel?]
But Raviel did not respond at first.
The silence in Kairu's mind stretched.
Then—
[These are not visions. They are echoes. The chamber stores the resonance of those who bore my lineage before you.]
Kairu's pulse slowed.
"Before me…"
His throat tightened.
"You mean there were others like me?"
The darkness thickened around him.
Another fragment drifted close — smeared, twisted, difficult to see.
The image inside was tall. Familiar. Broad-shouldered.
A man.
A name surfaced in Kairu's mind uninvited.
Shinjiro.
His brother.
Kairu's breath hitched. He stepped closer, reaching out—
But the fragment flickered.
Warped.
Then burst into motes of light as if rejecting his touch.
Kairu staggered back, heart pounding.
"Raviel… why did it react like that? Why— why did it show him—?"
Raviel finally answered.
[Because the chamber reacts to any who share threads with me. Your brother… carries a thread that should not exist.]
Kairu froze.
"What?"
But before Raviel could elaborate, the chamber itself trembled — a deep quake that sent cracks of red Ether racing across the floor.
The sigils on the walls ignited, reacting violently.
A crackle of electricity ripped through the air.
Something was waking.
Something massive.
[Kairu.] Raviel's tone sharpened. [You are not alone in here.]
Kairu turned slowly.
From the far end of the chamber, in the growing red glow…
A colossal figure began to form — a humanoid shape wrought from shadows and molten Ether, its chest marked with the same sigil as Kairu's hand.
It took a step forward.
The chamber buckled.
Kairu swallowed hard.
"…Raviel."
[Do not run.]
Kairu stared up at the towering entity, his pulse hammering.
"Then what do I do?"
[Raviel's voice deepened, echoing, vibrating through the chamber.]
[You face it.]
